is it just me or does anyone else find themselves digging through their catch to see what they have been eating lately?

As a young lad my father would always clean the first fish caught and we would examine the stomach contents and then make sure our lures matched. Kinda like 'matching the hatch', heh.

We do that exact thing too.

Used to be my favorite thing. Find out what they are eating, be ready to present it the next day.

Or used to.

Last summer's fish gut exploration on the cleaning table might have put an end to my need to know.

While exploring the depths of the daily catch Dern unearthed a full bodied decomposing 9" long mackerel.

The stench was so bad. I ran away gagging with the dry heaves. He thought it smelled bad too, but laughing at me probably made the smell easier on his senses.

I'm going to be very guarded from now on when we do our exploratory searches from now on.

ELINVESTIG8R - 1-17-2010 at 01:05 PM

Paulina did it smell worse than that fish factory on the right side of the road as you come from North to South into Ensenada? Now that place has a STENCH beyond belief!

wessongroup - 1-17-2010 at 01:53 PM

ELINVESTIG8R, remember coming back with a friend from being down two weeks on the beach at Johnson Ranch.. just camping out, living in the dirt, on the way back we would always roll the windows up on my VW when going by the fishery... and hold our breath...

This time, we were holding our breath for a really long time.. then finally realized it was us.. we had passed the fish factory at least 2 miles back.. :):)

OMG, it was a hundred times worse. I like to think of myself of as a fisher woman, I can chum like the best of 'em. But, that fish belly made me rethink my constitution.

Woody, I will never give up, only take a deeper breath before diving in with the filet knife next time.

Geez Paulina,I used to surf in that water where the canneries are! Of course I was like 14 or something, knew it stunk, but the waves were as smooth as grease!Ah, to be young and innocent...

When I worked on a fishing boat in alaska I realized that one of the internal organs had a bad stank. I don't know what organ, but keeping my knive from plunging deeply into the gut minimized the stinky organ.

Skipjack Joe - 1-19-2010 at 10:33 AM

Woody, I hear you can also foretell your fortune by studying those guts.
