Building in Baja 101

ckiefer - 1-17-2010 at 08:31 AM

If you are planning to build here in Baja, you should first consider picking up a little book by C. Phil Osso.

The title of the book is This Ol' Casa, Building in Baja 101, A layman's guide to building a baja dream home.

Never before has a book been so complete and accurate. This is the nuts and bolts issue, an easy read where you will find the most up to date, accurate information.

Knowing the intelligence lurking here on this forum, I assure you will love this author's writing style....:tumble:

Currently this book is available at Amazon.com

Another "must read" (should be mandatory for anyone considering building in Baja) is Jack Smith's classic, "God and Mr Gomez", also available at Amazon.com

Another is "Gringo in Paradise". Have also read "God and Mr Gomez", both are good reads.

It is necessary to read all these books and then research the particular area, developer/seller, his reputation among those who have gone before you, reputation among the locals. Pull aside his workers and ask them how they regard the developer/seller. Go to Catastro and research the title.

Then, study all the posts that have appeared throughout the years here on The BajaNomad regarding this topic. The collective experience of Nomads who have been through it all, some successfully and some not so is the real picture from our community. This is every bit as important in your research as the great books mentioned.

If you can't find it here, ask questions. Wade through the few detractors. Chalk it up to what happens in this microcosm of the larger world culture. Ignore the distractions and move on beyond them, and you will benefit greatly!

I met Phill Osso earlier this week and looked at a house he was just finishing up on, very impressive detail and finish work. Just finished the book, a "must read" for anyone contemplating building in Baja. My creative juices are flowing and I can hardly wait to get started.....dt

Thanks Bajabass!

I have a lot to learn. I have a lot in Pescadero just waiting for me to build upon it. All I need now is a plan and the time and money to make it happen!

We are in the same boat Hombre! I have a lot leased, and a rental in La Mision. I have plans and drawings for the house I want to build, but now my plans are starting to include more of a southward migration.:?:

Hey Bajabass!
I see in another thread that you may be on your way to Mulege - sounds to me that you are on the right track. Mulege was my first choice until I saw Pescadero. I'll bet you'll love it there. Best of luck to you!
