Family Fishing Fun in Asuncion...whales & dolphins galore!

For the first time ever, our family fished together. Sirenita was never one to catch one of her "cousins" (sirena means mermaid!!), but she finally wanted to see what all this fishing excitement was about. Well...she was a natural and was hooked after her first fish!

We got a late start and I managed to catch a nice 20 lb yellowtail first jigging irons out at San Pablo. But the currents were strong and it was cloudy with not great visibility so the bite was slow.

Gray whale groups began to parade by us so we quickly decided to cruise with them for awhile...then would return to fish a bit...then more whales would come along so we would again change gears and camera lenses to hang with the whales. Here are some of them in sequence.

Note the killer whale rake marks and prettty fresh bites out of her tail...ouch...but she got away.

Then in a calico spot, there were a couple humpbacks

and while we were being entertained by them, we saw a kafuffle off in the distance.....hundreds of pacific white sided dolphins.....hmmm....tuna???

So off we race to see if maybe there was a stray tuna. Sirenita grooved on all the dolphins squealing and bow riding...outstanding action...no tuna though...who cares?

I thought the distortion factor was interesting in this group.

this dolphin has had a few scrapes with killer whales too...notice the teeth marks in 3 different spots on his body!

this was my favorite dolphin photo...kinda bizarre!!

After a few hours of nature touring and a bit of fishing, we returned to San Roque Island to troll for calico and smaller yellowtail. This was major fun as we had fish on every 5 minutes or less. We all had spagetti arms after that. Sirena's novio Adrian caught the nicest calico of the day.

This trip was totally amazing and not really about the fishing!

Looks like you had a great day on the water, shari. Delightful to see the whale tails again. Dolphin pix are real nice, too. I just love speeding along in a panga with those babies racing and leaping all around us. Excellent good fun. Thank you for sharing.

Great pics, Shari! Mammals and fish. If your daughter is not hooked after such a day she must have some congenital immunity, and obviously not from her mother's side.

I had to wrestle the rod out of her hands so I could fish a bit to...she was one happy little mermaid!

You guys are so fortunate. Most people in this world never get the chance to experience a nature's wonderland as your photos depict. Wow!

that looks like a great trip. Love the photos.

bajahowodd....I am so blessed to be able to live here in this diverse rich area...even though I see it every day from our casa, it still overwhelms me at times....the beauty...the expansive view....the marine life....oh oh, I think I'm gonna cry.

For the trip not being about fishing, that is a nice yellowtail, and a toad calico. Don't mind me, I am a bass man! Yes, you are very fortunate to be able to live like you do Shari! I for one, envy the natural beauty you get to spend every day in and around. You are blessed, BIG TIME!!! I await the day I can move into my little house on the hill in La Mision full time. On that day I will begin to plan my further southward migration into Baja. Your photos and stories are making it harder to decide on either the Pacific or Cortez sides. Oh well, I have at least a couple years to sort out that issue!
