HELP - Pickup stuck in Cabo

I have 08 F-350 (yea I know save the advice of buying a dodge or chevy) that is sitting in cabo (I live in los barriles) with a blown transmison. I need to get it to San Diego. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to get it there? Thank you in advance.

perhaps you could get a rebuilt transmission put in down in baja...the work is good and waaaay cheaper...or is it under warranty? Most folks get it delivered on a flat bed transport truck but that is pretty expensive.

This may not address your problem but, let me tell you how a buddy handeled a similar situation.
He was way down there, blew out his tranny and needed to get the vehicle back to Ensenada. He came across a trucker who was coming north with an empty 40 foot flatbed trailer. They loaded his vehicle on the trailer, chained it down and off they went. The vehicle was delivered to his door.
Just a thought.

if it is under warranty i'd get ahold of the service/warranty manager where you bought the truck and have them arrange your transport AND PAY FOR IT.....

The truck is under warranty. Iam reluctant in contacting a ford dealer because I have heard that if you bring a diesel into baja they will void your warranty. I am presently involved in a lemon law case with this truck.

Sorry for your troubles, cflet. I feel your pain. I once had a diesel 2500 hauled north from Mulege. Like Dennis alluded to, I found and had a deadhead haul it back to the border for $500USD. That price will have changed by now. There are outfitters everywhere...go ask a local trucker or find one at a Pemex diesel pump near you. Ask around at lumber yards, etc. Always room for a pickup truck.

Not that it helps your current situation, but I am sure you know by now that some of the best years for Ford Powerstrokes were from 1999 to 2003. Engines and powertrains were tanks then.

I agree on the Ford dealer taking a dim view of it's whereabouts and fuel consumption in Mexico.

I could see where there might be some warranty issue if it was a fuel related problem, but not for a tranny. I do know they like to void the warranty for after-market parts and tuners so make sure you put the truck back to stock and clear the codes before you take it to the stealership.

Mexican dealers do NOT honor or even acknowledge warranties on any vehicle not purchased in Mexico.

i agree
put it on a flatbed and have someone haul it up to tj
probably $1500

ford will probably pay the fee if you contact them first and get a receipt

lots of trucks going up empty

follow the truck then arrange a tow service in tj to haul across the border
$300

take it to the dealer in san diego for factory repair

do not get a used transmission
it may not even be the trans
it might bejust a "valve thing" or the air filter

the truck is only a couple of years old

Why would that be? Ultimately, it's all tied to the same company. There is a Ford dealer in Los Cabos. What is there to lose by just contacting them? worst that could happen is they say no.

I should have known better than to ask. I was forgetting that my neighbor went to the Ensenada Ford dealer with a sun-roof window motor still under warranty and they wouldn't honor it. Maybe if they were offered some of that stimulating money.

Voice of experience....I bought a new Nissan in San Diego & it had less than 1,100 miles on it when I drove it into the local dealership....they quoted me a price to LOOK at the problem....I tried "the new vehicle, Nissan warranty not your dealership warranty, yada, yada, yada" approach....it fell on deaf ears....drove it right back out!

Also, as an aside, but somewhat related....I have a GM credit card that earns $$ against GM vehicle purchase....I've got about $3K USD accrued, I called GM & asked if I bought a US manufactured GM vehicle in Mexico could I use the credit....answer was a resounding "NO!"

Talking about the Mainland but should be the same on Baja. The Mexican Dealers are suppose to be trained to make the repairs you need. They have to have the parts shipped from the USA for non-std. Mexican models. You have to pay for the work but Ford is suppose to reimburse you upon your return to the States. Call Ford in USA and check before you go to all the trouble of shipping the truck back to USA. This all occurred to someone on rv.net outside of Tepic. Repairs were made in Tepic after parts were shipped from USA. In this case it was a blown Turbo Cooler and I believe it was a Chevy.

My rear end blew up on my Ford just south of San Felipe. Used my sat phone to have the sat phone provider locate a tow in San Felipe. No sweat, the guy showed in 15 minutes towed to San Felipe. Local mechanic said two to three weeks before he get the parts. Had the tow guy tow to border, HOWEVER, he could not tow across the border, dumped me off. Pretty melancholy, I could see the crossing but couldn't get across, night is falling, wife is upset ect. Found out that AAA in El Centro has a flat bed and he will come over the border to pick you up. I didn't have to use him for that as I removed drive shaft and put in 4X4 inched across the border to AAA's waiting arms. Cost for tow to border was $600.00 American. No I didn't haggle.
