Cedros Island?

fishbuck - 1-18-2010 at 05:37 PM

What's the cheapest way to get to Cedros Island.(For fishing ofcourse!)
Is there a ferry from G. Negro?

Hitching a ride on a Salt Barge

tripledigitken - 1-18-2010 at 05:44 PM

Maybe you could talk the captain of the Tug that takes the barges filled with salt out to the Island.

fishbuck - 1-18-2010 at 05:47 PM

Wow, that would be cool!

fishbuck - 1-18-2010 at 05:58 PM

The reason I am asking is because I saw a post by Cedros Outdoor Adventures.
Their trip is $1300 and includes air trans from San Diego. It sure looks like fun.
But if I can learn to tolerate the bus ride I might be able to do it much cheaper.
How do the workers get out to the island?

tripledigitken - 1-18-2010 at 06:01 PM

Fishbick,

I researched that myself awhile back and the most popular way to get there is by air from GN. Don't remember the cost.

Ken

fishbuck - 1-18-2010 at 06:05 PM

I saw some info that said Cedros Air leaves everyday at 10am and was about $50 each way. Probably the best.
I think it would be a brutal panga ride.

BooJumMan - 1-18-2010 at 06:46 PM

What do they do out there anyways?

fishbuck - 1-18-2010 at 06:56 PM

They move the salt out there and load it onto ships. Plus lobster, abalone, etc.
And it looks like good yellowtail fishing too.

Okay, I take the last bus out of TJ, Get dropped off at GN aeropuerto and catch the 10am plane to Cedros. Hang out for the rest of the day and fish the next, catch the plane out after fishing and catch a bus back to TJ.
Might work. A little crazy, but might just work.

Cedros Island a few years ago..

Pompano - 1-19-2010 at 03:33 AM

fishbuck, here's some memories on flying DC-3's to Cedros, although pretty dated nowadays.

Just some fuel for your fire. I had a ball over there... hotel and fun times fishing. You would enjoy it.

fishbuck - 1-19-2010 at 03:58 AM

I landed at the old dirt runway on my first trip down there.
I had flown to BOLA and was flying over to GN for fuel. They still had AVGAS then.
My plane was primitive and I was flying by AAAmap.
I got a little disorented flying across the desert.
I saw a little town and I was concerned I had flown past GN to the south.
So I landed at the little town. The whole town came out to greet me. Maybe thought I was Flying Sams or something.
A policia car pulls up and I show him the AAAmap.
"Guererro Negro"? I asked pointing to the map.
He laughs and says no and points down the highway south.
"Gracias" I say and jump into my plane.
About 15 minutes later I land at the dirt DC-3 runway in GN.
Never leave home without that AAAmap!
Thanks Pompano.

Where were you Bucko? :o:lol:

capt. mike - 1-19-2010 at 08:18 AM

1st time landing in GN was 1985 and we landed at the old dirt strip in town, not the paved military north.

there was a DC-3 there too.

we walked to Maramillos for lunch , blew a brake and went to Loreto, it was Feb.

beachbum1A - 1-19-2010 at 08:29 AM

Fishbuck, there's an air service that flies out of Ensenada two times a week direct to Cedros Island. I'll get the $$ and days scheduled for you. I know it's not that much and would save the bus ride to GN and trying to figure out how to get to out the island.

We went to a office here in Ensenada a few months back called "Agency Delfin". They quoted us a price of $1,200. pesos (one way) and said they had three flights a week direct to Cedros. Looks like this is the same group to me.

shari - 1-19-2010 at 12:42 PM

Locals around these parts just drive out to Pta.Eugenia fish camp and a panga can take you there for pretty cheap...not too far as long as it's in the morning before the wind comes up...you can ask around Turtle Bay too.

Jesus Maria.
When your going south I landed on the last dirt road on the right.
I think that is their runway. It use to have a windsock.
Whenever I drive past there I still can't believe I landed there.
Maybe it's not a runway.

YOU BET IT IS BUCK!!! (at least 12 years ago when Galen Hanselman wrote 'Air Baja!')

Look, there are two runways:

Mexitron - 1-19-2010 at 03:37 PM

fishbuck---I took the plane from Ensenada to Natividad via Cedros in 1986...definitely the way to go (speaking of which---the fishing is probably good on Natividad as well---I remember seeing huge tuna boils all around the island there in August---those islands are interesting in that warm and cold currents meet up there).

This looks look the way to do it. That's about $100 US each way.
Drive to Ensenada, park my truck jump on the plane. Doesn't get much better. It's a 2 hour ride in the C-208B Cessna Grand Caravan!
By car that's 10 plus hours and about the same money in gas.

I figured that out looking at the map. Plus I think it's been mentioned here before.
That's a long drive off the highway. Someday I'll go out there. But if I make it that far I'll fish from P. Eugenia. I'm sure the fishing just as good as Cedros.
It will be tough to drive past your road Shari!
But this trip is all about the least time and money + most fish = Best fishing trip ever.
This ain't no B. Asuncion drinking vacation.
I'll have to save that for some other time.

David K - 1-19-2010 at 04:51 PM

Hey Mike... What do I say?: "So much Baja... so little time!"

fishbuck - 1-19-2010 at 05:05 PM

Yes, I think I've heard that before:yes:

DC-3 Still flying Baja

Stickers - 1-19-2010 at 05:46 PM

I came across this beautifully restored DC-3 at San Felipe airport. It has new Jet-Prop engines and I think is used to market real estate to prospective buyers. The logo on the tail is "Air Baja"

Another photo of it with new paint. Parked at John Wayne Airport (the oc) in 2009

The old tail logo.

Parked at California City Airport on Oct 1, 2009. I think that's where it is now.
It was chartered by El Dorado Resort in San Felipe.

I'm having an idea to plan a Baja DC-3 trip.
I think it starts and ends at Brown Field in San Diego. That's right at the Otay Border Crossing.
Where next ?

She carries about 20 passengers plus crew. And cargo.
Full galley and lavatory.
Plenty of range and about 200mph.
Anywhere you want to go!

The ideal fishing option for you.

Pompano - 1-27-2010 at 05:05 AM

fishbuck, you really need to step up into one of these amphibs.

These birds will take you to Cedros, plus you can fish from them...the best of both worlds. ;D
