shari - 1-19-2010 at 01:07 PM

How is everyone faring so far in this big storm? We had a stunning cloud show at sunrise and it's been partly sunny so far but some dark clouds to the northwest...swell starting to build...they say it may get to 18' which I've never seen here...should be interesting out on the rock at our casa!!

We would LOVE to hear some onsite reports about storm & road conditions further north...gracias...stay safe.

Bob and Susan - 1-19-2010 at 01:09 PM

lizard lips - 1-19-2010 at 01:21 PM

It rained last night in Ensenada but did not come down hard at least not hard in the city. Today at 12:30 p.m. it just started to sprinkle. I think we dodged the bullet this time. Raining hard in san Diego right now according to friends.

Bob H - 1-19-2010 at 01:25 PM

We are getting drenched in San Diego, big time. And, it's expected to get worse this afternoon and into the night. Bigger stuff is on the way for Weds and Thurs.

Heavy rain at Disneyland right now!

san quintin rain

Susana - 1-19-2010 at 01:28 PM

We had rain off and on all last night. A little more today. Also some pretty good wind. Took a short drive in the 4x4, dirt road from Hwy. 1 to the Old Mill has lots of lakes. We didn't have any problems in the 4x4, but some areas in a 2 wheel drive car might be a little iffy, though people are getting through.

Russ - 1-19-2010 at 01:49 PM

Beautiful sunrise shot Shari! Winds been all over the compass today. Now North at 15mph but definitely warmer in Conception. Only 72º here but clear. No clouds anywhere.

Bajahowodd - 1-19-2010 at 01:56 PM

I can now add thunder and lightning to my observation. Very unusual for winter.

BajaGringo - 1-19-2010 at 02:05 PM

Rained all night out here on the beach and off and on so far today. Forecast is for thunderstorms later this afternoon...

bajabass - 1-19-2010 at 02:07 PM

Just heard on the radio, tornado watch out of Long Beach. Keep your eyes open, anyone in South LA county or O.C.:?:

Steady rain here in SD near Balboa Park but nothing torrential. I did manage to get in a long run this morning and a trip to Costco. We'll see how the rest of the week goes.

Natalie Ann - 1-19-2010 at 02:23 PM

We need the rain.
I'm wishing my roofer had made it here to fix the leak before all this began.
We need the rain.

Crazy wind and rain here in Costa Mesa. And it's very dark too.
I guess we need the rain but I wish I was way south right now.

I, too, love weather events. I'm from the cornfields of Illinois where the wonderment of huge thunder and lightening is taken for granted.

Perhaps you don't realize this, Igor, but you were very lucky to get thunder and lighting right outside your window.;D

I grew up in the snow, cold, and tornados of Michigan. We have had waterspouts here before, but I think this is the first tornado watch. Nice to see some real weather again.

ENSENADA UPDATE?

From the looks of the Radar you should be getting some of this weather about now.

It sounded like a jumbojet landing. Then a tremendous flash. I thought I was dreaming. Then I remember the computer rebooting a couple of times on it's own and I knew the power had gone off and on.

A true Walpurgis night. The only thing missing were the sounds from "A Night on Bald Mountain".

Bajahowodd - 1-19-2010 at 04:58 PM

There have been several tornado sitings in OC, Huntington Harbor, on down to San Clemente. And they say the worst is yet to come??

landyacht318 - 1-19-2010 at 06:40 PM

Pulled up to Moonlight beach around 11:30 am. 15 mph offshores, light rain, 12 to 15 foot face heights, a couple younguns out.

Around 2:00 there was a consistent 25 to 30 mph south wind with some gusts to 45mph or so.

Probably the strongest winds I've seen in S California.

A little after 3:00 , it got sunny.

Waiting on round 3. Hope it gales.

El Comadante Loco - 1-19-2010 at 06:46 PM

Just got back from San Felipe.. Lot's wind and blowing sand across the road at the Salada.. Light rain in San Felipe and coming into Mexicali.. Getting somewhat clear now..

danaeb - 1-19-2010 at 07:22 PM

How's the highway between TJ/Guerrero Negro? Any rain-related problems?

I have friends who were planning to leave San Diego for La Paz on Sunday, but were unexpectedly delayed and now might not be able to leave until Thursday or Friday (I know, the worst of the storms will pass thru then, but they need to get back to LP).

bajaandy - 1-19-2010 at 07:48 PM

Following this post as a friend just crossed the border this morning heading to San Quintin today and then points south tomorrow. Looks like he may have hit a weather window this morning. Hope so for his sake...

bajabass - 1-19-2010 at 08:15 PM

Bajaandy, if he makes good time he could stay ahead of the weather. Is he headed to the Cortez side? Danaeb, if the rains are hitting between TJ/GN, the way they have hit here, we have not seen anything yet, according to the weather reports. Waiting until Saturday may be a very smart choice!:light:

Punta Banda Weather- to Costa Mesa

prema2 - 1-19-2010 at 09:39 PM

Hi Shari

We were at our home in La Bufadora area this weekend watching the storm on sattelite TV...seemed like it was gonna stay along the border...We left for the border at noon Monday and Hit the squall line near Rosarito...We didnt make it to the border lines in time...the road along the fence was closed due to 2 feet of water so I took a detour up the hill in Tijuana...following the ridge because all the roads were rivers up to 4 inches deep running fast and muddy...The wind was howling and the rain came in horizontally... the normal 5 hour drive to Costa Mesa took 9 hours instead of 5..

Tuesday about noon it started to rain in Huntington Beach as I dropped off our baby at the family babysitter...The same thing was happing as along the border... I was about a mile from where to tornado hit...I cancelled a doctors appointment at 2 PM due to the tornado like conditions..3 inches fell Monday in Costa Mesa but Tuesday was short lived >>>about an hour of torential rain<<<then
the sun came out. Wednesday and Thursday are suppose to dwarf Mondays storm.I saw cars with water up to the windows Monday...Glad to be in our home up north cuz I worry about the power outages in Punta Banda..Sunday night ate 14 Lobsters in the freezer cuz i was afraid the power outages from the wind would ruin them while I was gone.WHAT AN EXCUSE yum yum

Definitely avoid the border highway eastbound through TJ. It goes through the lowest part of town and always floods during downpours. Just stay on the road that goes east from the toll road (Second Street) and drive through town. It leads straight to the border crossing lanes. I always use it.

Westbound using the border highway should be OK, those lanes are elevated.

DENNIS - 1-20-2010 at 09:11 AM

Well, we lost most of our power yesterday afternoon. A brown-out as it's called. Very low voltage lights would burn but nothing else would work. Stayed off till sometime in the night before 12:00.
Wind really blew yesterday PM, almost blowing me off the deck with a gust. DirecTV antenna is laid back....looks like a Wok.
No leaks...No damage for me but, others in town weren't that lucky.
Today is beautiful.... just like the start of yesterday. San Diego is calling for more of the same today so we'll get it too.
At 10 AM, I'm off to the beer market.

bajabass - 1-20-2010 at 09:20 AM

Stock up Dennis, the real storm will be this afternoon and tomorrow. Just had a quick shower pass by, but it is dark and windy here in Orange. Is the rain and wind blowing out of the south in Ensenada? When that happens it blows the rain right through the window vents in my house in La Mision. Had to repaint the south interior wall the last time we had vertical rain there, out of the south.

DENNIS - 1-20-2010 at 09:25 AM

Yeah...most of it is. Two nights ago, it blew from all directions it seems but, mostly from the south. Pretty scarey stuff.

shari - 1-20-2010 at 09:53 AM

thanks all for the reports...tornado watch....how bizarre! The wind has been from all directions here but only up to around 20 knots. It rained sporadically throughout the night and at sunrise but has cleared now to partly sunny at times...roads still passable with no arroyos running here...just some mud.
Looks like a nasty 40 knot wind coming tomorrow from the SSW and it says a 20' swell...dang...stay tuned for wave pics. The biggest we've seen here was 16'...should be dramatic.

Hold On

5:20pm, rain, lighting and thunder in Oceanside. Power out for 1/2 hour.

landyacht318 - 1-20-2010 at 07:03 PM

At 5:30 in Encinitas for about 30 seconds, there was some dime and nickel sized hail embedded in the thunderstorm. I was thinking about beginning to proceed to fret about my solar panel. A fair amount of lightening, wind and rain as well.

There were a few solid 8 foot(of swell) sets coming into Swarmies today, some face heights were more than double that. Very punchy, lotsa energy. impressive.

This is a still capture from a video clip taken with a point and shoot camera, taken today. Sorry for the poor quality. This was not one of the bigger sets to come in today. Nobody was on those to give it a size perspective.

Pretty hairy night here in the sierra, another 5-7 inches of rain with fierce gusts. I'm sure a few of them were close to 100 mph. Could hardly sleep with the wind noise. Got up at 6:00 to see a huge oak was blown over!!!

The biggest storm of the week is today (they say)... mostly this afternoon in San Diego County. Snow level dropping to 4,000 feet with up to 16 inches of snow in our San Diego mountains tonight.

Here in Oceanside, the storm total is 3.7 inches of rain with another inch to 2 inches predicted for today.

San Diego Update

tripledigitken - 1-21-2010 at 09:02 AM

Rain storm totals from my rain guage in La Mesa as of 7am this morning......4"

On the news this morning clocked wind gusts at Cabrillo Monument/Point Loma/San Diego yesterday.......75MPH :wow:

Be safe all!

astrobaja - 1-21-2010 at 09:37 AM

Well David, I think we're pretty much marooned at the ranch for at least a few days possibly more! Our arroyo is about 20 feet across with water (its normally 5-6 feet). I'm sure our 6km road will be quite damaged by erosion.

Everyone up at the park and observatory will be stuck for a while too since the big wash between the park and Meling will most certainly be unpassable!

Terry28 - 1-21-2010 at 09:43 AM

Here in Big Bear we awoke to over 2 feet of snow ( on top of what was already here) and it is still coming down, schools closed as are most everything else....and more snow and strong winds predicted...Can I dig it?
I guess I will have too.....

lizard lips - 1-21-2010 at 09:52 AM

Power out in Punta Banda this morning and lots of rain in Ensenada. Flooding everywhere. Schools closed.

San Quintin rain

Susana - 1-21-2010 at 10:01 AM

Rained all night here, and still raining now. The wind is blowing pretty hard as well. So far, we haven't lost power. Did lose internet for a short while. Doesn't look like we'll be going anywhere for a few days either.

shari - 1-21-2010 at 10:01 AM

It is blowing about 30 knots from the southwest...weird and the seas are angry (pact with el diablo??), partly sunny at times, looks like we might get some squalls maybe. Swells look around 12' and building.

Bouyweather now predicts 25' swells by tomorrow night which at high tide might broach the cliffs out here at the blowhole...hmmm...to board up windows or not??? It's gonna be a crazy day in paradise!!!

Oh yeah, many of you who hit your head on our low palapa will be happy to know it is being dismembered poco a poco right now by this wind.

Rosarito Beach Thursday Morning: 3" rain from the storm so far. Sustained winds yesterday at 46MPH. Major beach errosion with waves OVER the seawall here. We are getting ready for more winds and the 5-7" of rain predicted. The weather radar maps have as at the center of the incoming "red" zone. Luckily the power is staying on and our DirecTV and internet connection still up and running.

About what time is high tide tomorrow? Would be something to see the waves over the cliff in front.

Storm Watch

desandmarla - 1-21-2010 at 04:24 PM

We traveled from Loreto to Guerrero Negro today. Very little rain but horrible winds. Very slow driving with sand all over the road from Viscaino to Guerrero Negro. We are holed up in Mallarimo's now and everyone in Ensenada is telling us to stay put. Punta Banda has been without power for 24 hours now and reports are coming in about parts of the road missing. We ran into people coming south and there are several road closures with hours of wait. Many deep arroyos with four feet of water. So it seems the worst of it may be from Catavina to TJ as far as road conditions. Marla.

DanO - 1-21-2010 at 05:02 PM

A friend in TJ emails that there are numerous road closures in the San Quintin area and north, including the Sierra San Pedro Martir road, that various areas on the outskirts of TJ and Ensenada are a disaster zone, and that in his words, the Ensenda-San Felipe road is "all flocked up."

He also thinks that if this keeps up (and it looks like it will) the Santo Tomas River (it usually isn't one) is going to cut a channel straight through the middle of the beach at La Bocana. That hasn't happened since 1997, when three employees at the quarry at Punta China drowned trying to cross the river during the torrential rains that year.

Curt63 - 1-21-2010 at 05:11 PM

Lots of trees down in Escondido.

At the school I teach at, a large tree fell and took out all power.

Students and teachers released at 11:30 Whoohoo!!

lizard lips - 1-21-2010 at 05:13 PM

Just came back from downtown Ensenada and it is nowhere near a disaster zone but the roads are flooded and lots of pot holes you can't see. Punta Banda is still without power and it's 4:15 p.m. Thursday. The road to Punta Banda from Ensenada is good except for mud in Cantu crossing the road. I believe it's still passable though due to back hoe equipment. Be careful and drive slow. You can't see those pot holes when they are filled with water.

Oh Boy! A day without DENNIS!
