OK: We think we're supposed to be p*ssed but we're not sure:
Last trip down we pull into town and while airing down, gassing, icing and beering up the young man that does a little work for me at my place pulls
into the Pemex and wants to know if I have any work for him this trip. I squelch the inclination to ask him how the heck he knew I was in town as I
had only arrived 2 or 3 minutes ago but told him 'we' (this is the corporate we as I do as little work as possible myself) in fact do have some work:
tile, cut a hole in the block wall for window, build a rock wall, etc. Without going into detail, after 3 or 4 days the work was coming to an end and
my buddy, who always brings a liter of Jack Daniels with him suggested that we should have a toast at the end of the day to acknowledge a job well
done. I pour 4 shots of JD one for each gringo and one for each Mexicano who worked their butts off for 3 days. "Saluds" all around and down the
hatch. Geezzo- I thought these guys would die: red faces, coughing, gulps, sweat beading out on their upper lips - real rookie reactions and this
from guys who smell of beer by 'a la una' every day.
Finally the young man draws a breath and says, "Gasolina".
WTF????? We're talking JD here. A few hours later we were enjoying a fine cigar, our 3rd JD (whose counting?) and quietly staring into the fire and
I say, "Well, maybe 'gasolina' is not a negative term" but my buddy was having none of that.
So, is he right?Sidamone - 1-20-2010 at 06:42 PM
JD. more like Pees than gasolina.oldjack - 1-20-2010 at 06:47 PM
I am a bourbon fan!!! JD being a whiskey is a bit too tough for my old palate... I have an old friend who thinks JD with a teaspoon of sugar is the
best drink ever.... for myself I prefer Makers Mark a great sipping bourbon at a reasonable price... I always keep 2-3 bottles at my place in Los

I will agree with the Makers Mark. JD I think is GOOD but more of an aquired taste for some,
being that it is sour mash. A lot of big beer drinkers can't hang with the
higher octane stuff. Geez what would they say to a fine double proof like George T Stagg? They would most likely try to shoot it. SURPRISE!
A good tasty rum is Pyrat rum, not the skinny short dog but the
larger bottle stuff. REAL SMOOTH. Also good is Azteca de oro brandy.
I have seen a lot of recipes that use JD for the flavor.Mexicorn - 1-20-2010 at 07:41 PM

Santiago-
I am not a bourbon drinker so I would agree with the local workers that it is rough. They must not be used to it. Tequila, which I like, is a lot
different. I don't think your worker was being unappreciative or rude. I think he was just being honest. He probably is respectful of you for offering
it. In Mexican culture, it is rude to turn down a drink, even if he doesn't want or like it. In his eyes you're still a good hombre!

in the good ol days, JD was the "smooth"...loved the stuff!...now...a shot of hornitos and a cold pacifico fills the bill.
