Crossing Border This Sunday

Estrella - 1-20-2010 at 10:49 PM

We were planning on crossing at Tecate this Sunday at about 8 am. We were having second thoughts due to the weather and its possible impact on the 10 mile stretch of dirt road between Tecate and Ensenada. We will be pulling a small pop up type trailer. We have crossed at San Ysidro/Tijuana before 8 am on Sundays for the past 5 years without any problems. So would like to hear any current feedback at what crossing there early on Sunday morning has been for anyone. We also have not recieved our FMTs yet so may have to get them there. Also the banks are not open sooo is getting them in Santa Rosalia on Mondays still a viable option? Any current experiences that could prepare us would be greatly appreciated.

Save yourself time and grief and cross at SY/TJ. Well signed, beautiful drive and you know the drill.
Have a great voyage down yonder!!

You should get your FMT's before or when you cross.
You can pay for them later at a commercial bank.

I would watch the weather and wait for Nomad road reports in the next few days.
They are predicting high winds and heavy rain in Tecate/Potrero tomorrow.

The Tecate' - Ensenada road can be slicker than snail snot and much more messy in the areas that are under construction when it rains.

The bank teller at the Tijuana border is there 24/7... get it all done at one time and no waiting at a Mexican bank later.

You used to be able to get an FMT with a scolding at the state line crossing above GN . However I have heard that people have recently been denied the crossing into BCS without an FMT.

That section of road under construction through Guadalupe is going to be a mudfest for several day after the rain is done. Use SY, or be prepared for a nightmare! Several sections being used as detours around the roadbed work are below the road level. All the water will be sitting right in the way. I fully expect several areas to be impossible to get through. I may be wrong, but I doubt it.

FYI

The most important reason to have a valid Visa upon entering Baja is you will need to have it as a condition of your Mexican Insurance Policy. They could deny your claim without it!
