Possible alternate route

TonyC - 1-23-2010 at 09:04 AM

As we all know by now 1D is closed in either direction. I am still here in Socorro waiting to try to get on the road, any road, to head home. I am hoping someone knows an alternate safe route to Ensenada. On a lighter note there is power and phone service again.

Horse or pack mule?

Hook - 1-23-2010 at 09:45 AM

You should probably post what it is you are driving.

TonyC - 1-23-2010 at 09:47 AM

Toyota Tundra 4X4. Not a horse or a pack mule.

There are too many possible flooded arroyos both north and south of you, at Socorro...

There is a rough dirt road that goes east from Socorro, past El Cipres, and meets a better dirt road that goes south to Hwy. 1 via Los Martires... for DRY WEATHER... lot's of arroyos are crossed, and it is NOT an escape for you now!

You are on an island for a few days... Have you checked the long bridge aver Arroyo Santa Maria... just north of the Los Pinos Pemex/ Cielito Lindo road? That and the new Hwy. 1 route was built after the original route of Hwy. 1 was so frquently washed out.

Thanks but that sounds sketchy, I have faith in my Toyota but it is not indestructible I will hold tight till I know more.

David K - 1-23-2010 at 11:26 AM

When you can, drive up to Los Pinos and see if the big bridge there is still standing, or if it looks like El Rosario's bridge:

Will do. Thanks again. I tried Wednesday due east and could not pass thru. On Thursday tried due west. I am currently dry and safe at home in Soccoro. May venture out for food and may go see if that route is a good one.

We tried taking those connector roads after the winter of 1997...impassable, the road had become the river, guess the ranchers didn't need the road enough to rebuild...but a few years later a better road had been built by the Yuccadores.

bajabass - 1-23-2010 at 01:50 PM

Is that a current picture of the bridge just south of El Rosario?

TonyC - 1-23-2010 at 01:57 PM

I believe that was posted at 7:30 this morning from someone that was at the site.

bajabass - 1-23-2010 at 02:10 PM

Reminds me of the bridge between SJDC and Cabo. When Juliette visited BCS in 2001. Blew out both ends of the"brand new bridge". Had to stay 2 extra days to be able to walk across carrying all our luggage. That is going to take some time to repair!

David has been posting this image al over as if its his own. Sad in times like this... but he should give credit where credit is due

fishbuck - 1-23-2010 at 03:05 PM

TonyC, did you get to fish before the storm?

Norte,
Gee, I didn't notice David taking credit for the bridge pic....but I DO appreciate seeing the pic....I think the important issue here is "Is that a current photo?"

Bash David ONLY when he deserves it....:saint:

I also like the picture. But maybe he could have clarrifyed that it was a earlier picture posted by Baja Cactus. But minor detail given the circumstances

TonyC - 1-23-2010 at 05:44 PM

Thanks to all for the updates. Bridges that were first reported as affected are washed away. Definatley stranded trying to get a plan B here. Maybe it will be drier tomorrow and the southern route will be a long way, but a way around back to the border.

David K - 1-23-2010 at 11:12 PM

Since the photo was posted by my friend BajaCactus first, in the major thread on the storm people should be reading first, I believed it was already known whose photo it was...

re-showing it again in this thread to show it around more and to ask if the Santa Maria river bridge looked like it.

I guess some read stuff here from the bottom up?

At this point any info is better than none thanks David for what you bring. Just saw a post stating that the traffic is flowing or maybe trickling to Ensenada. I need to confirm that as I am still here. Again, many thanks.

Hey Mike, I made it home, and did get to fish...nothing special, freezer fishing.

Now for Tony's big adventure. My wife Becky was postinfg for me while I was stuck.

I tryed to leave Thursday last week, and got stuck south side of bridge in Vicente Guerrero. Stayed 4-5 hours thinking made they might allow a vechile at a time to cross. Every bridge I crossed from Socorro was raging, especially the one after Los Pinos...didn't think it would stay up. Anyways, gave up at V.G. and went back to Socorro. Crossing the brigde at Los Pinos had my a$#hole puckering up, especially went dude in front of me decided to slow down to a crawl for picture taking on the freaken bridge. OMG.

Tryed to leave Friday morining..no way. Hwy. 1 in Papolote just before Lazarro Card##as flooded. Gave up, and had Becky post here for any possible way out. Burned 4 days of emergency vacation.

Left Tuesday V.G bridge is no mas. Cross by driving across the river west of the bridge. Stayed In Ensenada Tuesday night, and got home last night.

No gas in S.Q south till last gas station before Socorro...only rojo. Only $300 pesos limit till Monday, Tuesday when I left they let me get $500. pesos.

Won't get into what happen after I crossed the river Tuesday...I'm an idiot.
