New immigration rules??

roamingthroughbaja - 1-30-2010 at 09:21 AM

Talked to someone last night who told me the immigration rules had changed as of Jan 1st and that it is now possible to apply for naturalization after TWO years on an FM2 instead of five years. Can anyone comment on this?

I think you can apply for Naturalization any time...not sure about that though.
At any rate, it seems you may be refering to Inmigrado which comes after FM2. It's not Naturalization or Dual Citizenship.
I asked a while back if I could bypass a few years with the FM2 and was told, No, but maybe it changed, as you say. I'll look into it.

ONLY IF:

You are married legally to a Mexican citizen
You have had a child that is Mexican (born in Mexico)
Are from a Latin American country in Central or South America
You are from the Iberian Peninsula
You have adopted a Mexican child
You have been adopted by Mexican parents
You have made a $ignificant contrubution to Mexican society

then you must fufill the residency requirements and other requisitos. You'll need to be fluent in espanol as well. The rules did change, they've become more strict.

As with most questions posed at various Immigration offices....apparently it's different strokes for different folks!!!

Eons ago (about 2003) when I went into La Paz Immigration to renew my FM3 after 2 years, they asked me if I wanted to move up to an FM2....at that time, I didn't have an understanding of the benefits, all I understood is that it'd cost quite a bit more $$ for both the initial FM2 & the renewals & in my mind (then) it couldn't "buy" me much.

After 10 years of sticking to an FM3, I finally started to see the light & discovered Immigrado was different than Naturalization & fell into the process before Naturalization.:(

I asked if based solely on my time as a permanent & full-time resident if I could bypass FM2 & go straight to Immigrado. I was told "No, but after 2 years on FM2, you can apply for Immigrado." I applied for & received my first FM2 in December 2009.

I know at least one other person who went from FM3 to FM2 at the 2-year mark & who was also told by La Paz Immigration that she could apply for Immigrado or Naturalization after 2 years on FM2.

Based on the list of criteria you posted flyfishingpam, I'd have to have my FM2 a full 5 years; but there were no restrictions or qualifications specified by Immigration in December 2009. So I guess time will tell.

Shoot. I am going to ask if anyone wants to adopt me.

FFP, I do know that it's not Immigration that handles Immigrado or Naturalization, sorry that my post didn't convey that. Thanks for clarifying my haziness.
