Read this off a fishing site, couple guys fished
Puerticitos, reported as happening
3 days ago, at the checkpoint no. of
San Felipe Hwy 5, have no reason not to believe it,
I've been thru that checkpoint many times,
I've never heard of this procedure, although they
probably would'nt feel the need to search me,
reads as follows:
Next was the military checkpoint. We pull up and they ask to inspect the car. We step out and this guy seems pretty cool. Just doing his routine check
under the seats and around the car when another one of the soldiers comes to talk to me. He starts asking me 21 questions.... For some reason he keeps
staring at ( I removed the guys name)
and then he asks
"Do you guys smoke Marijuana?"....
"um...no"...
"Yeah, I think you do"...
"no we dont smoke at all"
"Well I think you do"
He comes up to (name removed) and asks him to empty his pockets. I translate for him... "If you have any weed on you, you might as well pull it out
now because im going to find it"..."O...k..." He gave (name removed) a pat down and found nothing. He stares us down and the other guy finishes his
inspection and tells us we can go. We didnt feel too bad about the whole thing. These guys have a job to do and personally, im glad to see they are
doing it. We werent the only car that got a thorough inspection. Every car that came through the checkpoint got checked.
We continue toward our destination... Just before the military inspection the paved road ends and detours into this dirt side road.BajaWarrior - 2-2-2010 at 05:21 AM
Good thing these guys weren't carrying weed because Northbound they do search a little harder.
At that same checkpoint North of San Felipe for years you could just skate on through Southbound but no longer. Everyone out, but it's always less
than a minute.
Remember This!

Wow, we go through that checkpoint a lot and have never been questioned that way. Must be something new. In Jan., however, we did see a roving
military checkpoint just before the gate at Tecate (leaving Mexico) and they were doing pretty long searches of each car going through (but it was
still faster than going through Mexicali). They packed up and left before we got to the gate so I don't know if they were also questioning people.güero - 2-2-2010 at 07:22 AM
Hola everyone, as you can see I'm new here!!
Last time I was distracted by one of the army boys, the other one put one of my belongings in his pocket. Of course I'm sure everyone knows to watch
them at all times.

Thanks for the heads-up, güero. Welcome to BajaNomad.Woooosh - 2-2-2010 at 08:59 AM
Five grams of pot is legal to possess in Mexico for personal use. Even small amount of coke, ice and heroin are now legal. Just hand him a joint and
tell him to enjoy it after work. DENNIS - 2-2-2010 at 09:03 AM

I don't think I would do that. wessongroup - 2-2-2010 at 09:15 AM

Well....if you arn't doing anything today, you could test it for us and send in your report. Bajajorge - 2-2-2010 at 09:29 AM
I have gone through the northbound check point north of San Felipe numerous times. When they have a tip of drugs moving northbound, they really get
carried away. Profiling to them is bust everybodys chops.
You'll really know when they have a tip when between San Felipe and Mexicali there will be some 2-3 additional military checkpoints, and usually 2
more checkpoints run by the Federalies. Adds about another hour or more to the trip.

That advice is golden inasmuch as Mexico has followed the Napoleanic Code, historically, wherein one is guilty until proven innocent.
On another note, the original post did not provide a description of either the people involved or the vehicle they were driving. given that, audiobaja
may well be right on about the soldier looking for his own personal score. Those guys could have been profiled based upon appearance.wessongroup - 2-2-2010 at 12:16 PM

I've got an excuse from the teacher, I can't drive and I don't have a car, and lastly I don't have a joint, well, maybe you could bring one by.. then
I could go from there...
I won't tell anyone you will be "holding" on your way up to drop it off.. and you would only have one check point, piece of cake for a guy like you..
with your silver tongue you would have no problems.. hell, if you get though the first check point, keep on going all the way
We will all be rooting for you let us all know when your leaving, today or tomorrowDonjulio - 2-2-2010 at 12:47 PM
They just recently busted a pretty large marijuana shipment going through there so they are a little more on their toes.sancho - 2-2-2010 at 01:00 PM
Good point Bajahowodd, the post I read from
the fishing site, was posted by 20 something
guys, I would assume they profile the heck
out of travellers, another item in this guys
post was being pulled over on the Hwy
for speeding, which he confessed to,
I believe they are called Mex Federal Camino
Police, do they have radar? he was issued
an actual TICKET of all things, wonders will
never cease, which he paid $20 dollars
for doing 110 km in an 80 zoneDENNIS - 2-2-2010 at 01:04 PM

They sure do. It used to be a Tecate can on the end of a stick but now it's the real thing.mulegemichael - 2-2-2010 at 02:32 PM
wow!...weird!....in all the decades i've been driving down NEVER have i or any of my passengers been patted down...and i was 20 something once...i
think..first time i've ever heard of this..bajabass - 2-2-2010 at 04:45 PM
I have been through umpteen dozens of checkpoints and had my truck thoroughly searched, but never patted down. Either they were seriously profiled, or there is more to the story!torch - 2-2-2010 at 08:36 PM
I was told to remove the contents in my pockets once at a check point. that was very wierdEdguero - 2-13-2010 at 10:37 PM
I got asked for my FM-T and passport coming into Gonzaga at the checkpoint before Rancho Grande last week, I even saw a poilicia truck drive into
Punta Final and do a loop through town...........times are a changin.vandenberg - 2-14-2010 at 01:09 PM
Just made the drive from Tecate to Loreto and was amazed at the difference at the checkpoints compared to just 16 months ago. No more waving through.
Was questioned at every stop and lots of cars were searched. Mainly Mexican plated though. Some stops had larger delays then going north.sancho - 2-14-2010 at 02:16 PM
Edguero, I've heard of an OCCASIONAL check
of fmt's at Mil Checkpoints, another reason
for having some form of Mex IMM Papers,
this constant debate over the need
for an fmt in No Baja for short periods
drives me nuts,
no need for a 7 day this or that, raise your hands
who wants
to be questioned by the Mex Military, etc.,
for lack of an fmt, I'll stay with the old
regs, longer than 72 hrs., or so of San Felipe, so of Ensenada
get an fmt
