Playa Perla

absinvestor - 2-4-2010 at 05:46 PM

We're going to be at Bahia de Concepcion in about a week. We're in a 31' motorhome without a tow. Is Playa Perla easily accessible and is there sufficient room to turn around without getting stuck? Thanks Ron

Diver - 2-4-2010 at 06:01 PM

Playa La Perla is next to El Requeson.
There is an entry into El Requeson that is a little steeper than the one just south for La Perla.
You can make either one with your rig but the departure is easier up the La Perla road.
You can drive between them and there should be plenty of room to turn around.
La Perla has some palapas and nice views but you have to walk down to Requeson for the nice beach - 150 yards.
Enjoy !!

bajajudy - 2-4-2010 at 06:03 PM

When we went by last week, Perla was packed. We kept on going.

David K - 2-4-2010 at 06:23 PM

Here's my photos at La Perla, last July (we were the only ones there, other than the fishermen that run the place):

I was able to get the sunrise photo because an arriving fisherman drove past the palapas before sunrise with his Norteņo music blaring, and then left it on when he parked at their shacks, just past the palapas.:o:yes:

absinvestor - 2-4-2010 at 06:33 PM

Thanks. Seems like this beach is either packed or dead depending on the day. Is there enough room to park up on the road so one can walk down to see what is available vs driving. If Perla is packed, what is the best 2nd option? Thanks Ron

David K - 2-4-2010 at 06:53 PM

Packed? I doubt it... maybe during Semana Santa (Easter)?

There is room to back in turn about, I think... a large flat area where there has been trash dumping is right across the old road from the palapas. No, the distance to Highway One is too far and there is no parking on Hwy. 1.

Come in on the El Requeson signed driveway, as it is downhill... Near the water you will go right for La Perla and left of El Requeson.

Requeson is nicer, but they only had a few palapas and none vacant last July. Lots of turn around room at Requeson.

If you then go to La Perla, you can leave via their driveway, just south off the old Baja main road.

Diver - 2-4-2010 at 06:59 PM

I don't think there is room on the road to park; you will need to pull down into Perla.
There is a loop drive to the caretaker's house so you will have no problem getting back out.

On the way to Perla, you will pass all of the other campgrounds so you can check out the alternatives.
Santispec, Coyote, Burro, etc.
If you come in late, Sanitspec always has room, is the easiest to get into and is the closest to Mulege.

There are spaces at the Serenidad for the Saturday night pig feast.
They also have power and dumps at the spaces but no view or ambiance.

Thanks to all. We appreciate it. Ron and Patty

Oh you do...were you there last week?

absinvestor - 2-4-2010 at 11:11 PM

To BajaJudy- I know you didn't stop but any idea why it was packed? We spoke to a couple last night (in Vicente Guerrero) who said La Perla was dead when they were there. (It was their favorable experience that prompted us to ask BajaNomad about the ease of getting down there in a larger motorhome. (They were in a small van.) Unfortunately I didn't get the time frame. They went from La Perla to Cabo San Lucas. They arrived in VG yesterday so I'm guessing they were in La Perla a couple of weeks ago. Were the other nearby beaches busy? Thanks for the info. Ron and Patty

Playa La Perla is not very big. 10 or so rigs can make the difference from empty to packed. It is often full during the winter. I haven't been there in two years but I remember it as a place that would be tough to get into with a big rig. You can pull into Requeson and walk over to La Perla to check it out.

This is 1/3 to 1/2 of La Perla:

k-rico - 2-5-2010 at 01:29 AM

I love the place too
I think that it was a caravan because every palapa was taken.
I have seen Requeson with more rigs so the people at Perla must have been together.
No the other beaches were not packed. Los Cocos had a full beach but El Burro had almost no one.
I just bet you will be able to find something as there were a lot less people, in general, on the road.

Thanks Judy. We appreciate it. Ron and Patty

Diver - 2-5-2010 at 09:05 AM

Where are you guys ??
And where to next ??

David K - 2-5-2010 at 09:12 AM

Sorry Judy, I didn't mean it to sound that way.

During last summer when El Requeson was full (and it is BIG)... there wasn't one guest at La Perla, next door... other than us. Two years before, when we were lucky to get a palapa at Requeson... we still didn't see anyone at La Perla. That's why I thought it odd that it could be 'full', off season.

After being awakened by the blaring music, we figured everyone else already knew it wasn't a good place to camp and that is why it was always vacant!:rolleyes:

bajajudy - 2-5-2010 at 10:02 AM

DK
no worrys but also
this is the season when all the northerners come her to warm up so the beaches can be quite crowded.

David K - 2-5-2010 at 10:46 AM

Oh, sure... right you are... the 'snowbirds'! We used to see them around here a lot (San Diego)... Not so much this year... Guess the economy sucks in Canada too?

KAT54 - 2-5-2010 at 03:02 PM

That place looks lake a dump.
Where are the bathrooms and showers?

HUH?

This is a CAMPING beach, dry camping.... palapas only.... Trash dump? If you can bring it in, you can haul it out! However, there are trash cans. There are also outhouses... BUT, we will take a desert drive when that time comes!

Want running water? Go to Cabo San Lucas!:light: The Sea of Cortez is 5 feet from your palapa and is bathtub warm... Why camp on the sea and not go into the water?

Ron:
You'd better continue seeking first-hand info from someone who has actually driven the access roads lately.
We drove both roads in early January in my PU and BOTH were so rough I wouldn't take my enemy's rig down either Requeson or Perla. Unless Francisco has done A LOT of backbreaking labour, it's probably not much better yet.
We're talking chassis gouger here.

Agree, it is rough... I had to go slow in my Tacoma! But, Diver made it sound like a cakewalk... Since I don't drive a big moho or camper I couldn't offer anything more. Santispac is a safe bet... right?

sc-surfer - 2-6-2010 at 10:55 PM

We were there last week as well. La Perla was occupied but not totally full. Requeson had about 12 long term rigs but still plenty of space. The roads in were about like they usually are...rough. However, you shouldn't have any trouble if you go slow. Just creep along and you will have no trouble.

Sntispac has been empty except for the occasional caravan. We spent almost a week on the south end of the beach by the mangroves and had the place to ourselves. (Got sick on rib night at the restaurant though!)

Sorry Diver- didn't see your post. We are currently in San Ignacio- will be in Bajia Concepcion Thurs afternoon. Our wi-fi has been sporatic at best with no connection for most of the days. Ron and Patty

Interesting thread... of all the times we've camped around Bahia C... never stopped by to see Playa Perla, or even knew how to access that area. Bob H

As you head south from Mulege, you first see the view of El Requeson from the high curve and then come downhill to the little sign that says El Requeson. About 1/4 mile or so further south is a similar sign to Perla.

If you come in the entry to El Requeson, when you get to the beach Perla is to the right and Requeson to the left. They are connected by camp road so you can use either entry to get to either campground.

Diver, thanks... I'll have to check it out. I really like the Perla palapas I saw on this thread. Bob H

As long as the pre-dawn, car-arriving fisherman doesn't blast you from sleep with his cranked up tape player!:wow:

Diver - 2-10-2010 at 11:11 AM

We've never experienced pre-dawn fisherman with loud radios at Requeson but I have heard some late-night arrivals, espescially on weekend nights, playing a loud Mexican polka.

I love quiet mornings at Requeson, feeling the sun's early heat, a glassy high tide, coffee in hand, dogs exploring, kids still in bed, birds in sky, smile on face.
.

Edit: I wish I was as good as DK at posting pictures so you could see how good this feels....

Thanks to everybody. We decided to stay at Santipak. There were about 12 rigs so plenty of space. We had the last Palapa at the south end which was perfect for us with a Golden Retriever that lives in the water!! We're heading South to Los Barrilles and Todos Santos but on the way we looked at Requeson. The entrance when heading South is a little tight and would have to be entered pretty slow. There is not a lot of visability for a North heading truck and I had visions of a north heading truck slamming into my slow moving turning vehicle so decided to pass it up. The entrance when heading North looks doable so we will check it out when we head back North from Todos Santos. When we passed La Perla on Feb 14th, there were open palapas. Ron and Patty
