East Cape Beach Reports

Tommy, Gary Graham of Baja on the Fly fame posts his weekly reports here. His screen name is Bajafly.

There is good shore fishing right in front of Rancho Leonero, and north about a half mile is a great pargo hole, though it's better to fish the pargo from kayaks or pangas. Leonero rents fishing-rigged kayaks.

A few Octobers ago, we drove up to El Cardonal from Leonero. There was great looking shore fishing the whole way up- about 12 miles if memory serves.

South of Los Barriles is Punta Colorado, and further south is Punta Arena- both are roosterfish havens, though October isn't prime-time for roosters.

Pick up the "Fish-n-Map" Co. "Sea of Cortez Charts-South" about $6.00, very helpful for shore fisherman. They've got a website.

The usual tackle for Baja beach fishing is 10-15 lb rod-n-reel, bring some frozen squid, plenty of Krockadiles in Blue/chrome, some heavier leader material, live bait hooks sized 1 thru 2/0 and some wire leaders in case the sierra are in. robert's Rangers are good, and you can really huch 'em out there.

One more thing, good pliers are a must! Never put your fingers in the mouth of a bullseye pufferfish, they'll take it off!
