I received two emails today that Yuan Yee, Presidente del Municipio de Loreto, was arrested on attempted murder charges and jailed in La Paz, although he is allegedly out of jail already. Anyone have an update?

i just spent about $20,000 in a legal defense due to M&I Bank siding with a crook in a loan deal. i won my case - and M&I plead STUPID.
they got the TARP money....and i got the shaft... and doble EFFED!!

YUAN [Yee] AND SEVERAL OF HIS POLITICAL BUDDIES TOOK A REPORTER OUT TO MIRAMAR AND BEAT THE CRAP OUT OF HIM. "NEAR DEATH" WAS THE TERM THIS LOCAL BUSINESSMAN USED. YUAN IS IN JAIL IN LA PAZ AND IT IS PUTTING THE GOVERNOR OF BCS SUR IN A REALLY BAD POSITION. ELECTION COMING UP AND HE AND YUAN WERE TIGHT.

At least this will derail his ambitions to be the next governor of Baja Sur. And Narciso has his own problems with the whole stink over El Teo hiding out in plain sight in La Paz.

I'm not convinced that story is true. This article in Sudcaliforniano says Yuan Yee attended a school function yesterday morning, when he was supposedly in jail. And no Mexican newspaper has picked up the story that he was arrested.

What party is Yee? PRD, PRI or PAN???? I'd guess PRI. I hear he has placed in effect some horrorendous taxing laws that has increased the way the property taxes are formulated. Therefore, increasing the income from the American/Canadian community through more taxes for the community.

Before we all decide this is true, maybe we should wait for some proof. If anyone has proof, not gossip, maybe they should post it.

I don't know if some of the story, all of the story, or none of the story is true. I do know that the story has grown some since I first heard it.

well for sure it makes for very choice joke material in english and spanish. we gotta work with what we have on our limited resources down here ya know. Loreto so far has been found to be very rich in this particular one.

Regarding property taxes: My Loreto property taxes quadrupled between Jan 2008 and Jan 2010. Most of that right after the new administration....

Granted, they were quite affordable compared to up north, and I am certainly willing to pay my fair share for the community good.... But quadrupled...? The amount of taxes went way up while the discount for early payment went waaaay down.

I WOULD like to know if this is the same for everyone in Loreto, Mexicans and FM2 / FM3 holders or if there is a different formula for each.

As for the rest.... I am all ears and smiles . . . .

I enjoy a little local spice and color !

Loreto property tax went up 1,000% for me the year before last. I demanded an explanation and was walked through the new system. They have a computer program that uses Google-style overhead images of all the properties to calculate the new taxes from the apparent construction as well as the boundaries and location of the property. I was able to convince them that the large round structure that accounted for about a third of my own increase is a laurel tree with a hammock under it. They adjusted it out, but that was the best I could do. The community of Loreto is learning that electing a party (PRD) different from those in federal power (PAN) can leave them a bit short of funds. That may go a long way toward explaining the new deal on taxes. They also have adopted a zoning scheme where some areas are taxed at rates much higher than others. The map of the zones follows the coast mostly, but jogs abruptly inland in “certain neighborhoods.”

As far as the original post goes, I hear no big buzz around here about Yee being jailed for anything.

My Loreto taxes were exactly the same this year as last. Didn't pay much attention to the early pay discount, but I think it must be about the same as well since the total was the same. Of course, my property isn't in as fancy a neighborhood as yours!!!

David, the anouncment car was going around in November anouncing a 30% discount. I scurried over the rubble to pay. My increase was about 10% before the discount.

as a renter, I don't pay property taxes but I was told one reason for the apparent increases is that Yuan Yee decided to do away with the discount for GRINGO seniors who had been getting that under the INAPAM 'tercera edad' program/card.

The tax payment discount is related to when you make your payment...starts at 30% and then goes down as time goes on. It's for all people who pay property tax. Has absolutely nothing to do with discount cards. Once again, the rumor resource is rich!!!!

David...and others who are interested. I checked my receipt for last year and for this year. The taxes were exactly the same, but the discount last year was 25% because I paid them in January, and 30% this year because I paid in December, so I actually paid less this year. In your case, it seems possible that there were improvements to the property not known to the municipalidad until recently which changed the value. There might be another reason, but this one seems possible.

An excellent idea.. I do not "own" property, only lease at this time.. However... this subject is of interest to those staying down here, one way or the other.

The question of specific tax rates on property in specific locations is very helpful.. opposed to "low" "not much" "$50" "really cheap""we don't pay"... as everyone pays taxes.. unless we have reached the "event horizon".. then it really does not matter in this dimension ...

Yuan Yee: We've been out of town (Oaxaca) and haven't heard the latest rumors. But things seem pretty normal around here.

About three years ago there were rumors about the PAN mayor doing bad things. Maybe, maybe not.

Taxes:

January, 2008 my tax was 157.78 and the discount was 31.55

January 2009 my tax was 944.93 and the discount was 236.23.

December 2009 my tax was 944.93 and the discount was 283.48...I paid earlier and got a bigger discount.

I got the same explanation as Tehag. We did some building. I believe there was also a tax rate increase in 2008 but I think it was around 10 percent.

Our undeveloped lot here had a 1000% tax increase. Seems that they started enforcing that "build within 2 years" rule. I was able to get it cut in half when I showed them our FM2's but still a lot more money than last year.

2007 $ 329 p. after about 25%
2008 $ 1341 p after about 25%
2009 $ 1609 p. after 10%
