Sentri Lane

yellowklr - 2-25-2010 at 08:44 AM

Hello Baja Experts...
Just wondering what is the easiest and quickest way to get to the San Ysidro Sentri line when coming back from Ensenada???
Thanks

bajaguy - 2-25-2010 at 09:04 AM

Take Blvd 2000 and cross at Otay....see your u2u

Cyanide41 - 2-25-2010 at 09:06 AM

depending on time of day, Bajaguy might be on to something! Otay is easier to cross. Just keep in mind the sentri lane closes there from 10pm-5am.

SDRonni - 2-25-2010 at 09:09 AM

Bajaguy, will you please share the details w/the rest of us who would like to know? Muchas gracias!

Otay SENTRI

bajaguy - 2-25-2010 at 09:15 AM

BLVD 2000

SOUTHBOUND TO ENSENADA

To get to the Otay crossing:

Take the 5 or 805 Freeway south to the 905 Freeway east. The 905 turns into Otay Mesa Road. Get into the center or right lanes. Otay Mesa Road veers to the right and sets you up for the border crossing.

To get from the Otay crossing to the Toll Road at Popotla using Blvd 2000:

When you cross at Otay and clear Mexican Customs, you will be on Garita de Otay. Proceed straight ahead (get into the left lane) for one mile to the first STOPLIGHT controlled intersection which will be Industrial Blvd. There is a tire shop on your left hand side of this intersection. Also signs indicating TECATE/MEXICALI.

Turn left onto Industrial Blvd and proceed straight ahead for approximately 5 miles. Follow the traffic signs that indicate "TECATE" and "MEXICALI". Stay in the left hand lanes as you will proceed over the new business district overpass and just ahead pass under a pedestrian footbridge with "PANASONIC" written on it.

After you pass through the warehouse/industrial district, you will drive down a slight downgrade.....get into the right hand lane.

At about the 5 mile mark you will see signs indicating "TECATE" toll road to your left (straight) and "ROSARITO" "ENSENADA" and "BC 201" to your right. Take the right hand turn. You are now on Blvd 2000.

Proceed straight for approximately 26 miles, following the signs for "ROSARITO" and "ENSENADA"

Be cautious as first enter Blvd 2000 as you will be passing through a urban area with cross traffic and pedestrians.

After about 26 miles, you will pass under the Toll Road and come to a "T" intersection with traffic signals that do not work.. This is Popotla and the "Free" road. The old Fox-Baja studios and Rosarito are located to your right.
Be careful at this intersection as the traffic to your right headed southbound does NOT have a stop sign.

Turn left onto the free road and proceed to just north of Puerto Nuevo, take the toll road on ramp headed south (if you are headed to Ensenada) Note: This on ramp may be closed….if so, you may also drive the free road south and enter the toll road at Cantimar or La Mission

ENSENADA TO OTAY crossing via Blvd 2000

Proceed north on the toll road from Ensenada.

Exit toll road at Cantimar (unknown if the Puerto Nuevo exit is available due to toll road construction)

Proceed north on the free road to Popotla. You will pass the Calafia resort on your left and come to a Mexican military checkpoint. After you clear the checkpoint, get into the right lane, There will be a “T” intersection (to your right) with stoplights (not functioning) and a stop sign. Turn right. This will be BC Mex 201 or Blvd 2000.

(If you pass the old Fox movie studios on your left, you went about 500 feet too far.)

Proceed approximately 26 miles on BC Mex 201……..
Follow the signs for Garita Otay/Tijuana/San Diego/Tecate/Mexicali

You will pass from a rural area to an urban area. Be aware of cross traffic and pedestrians. You will also pass a Commercial Mexicana on your right and a Home Depot on your left…….when you pass the Calimax on your right, move into the right lane.

At about the 26 mile mark, there will be a sign indicating a ramp to your right for Tijuana/San Diego
Take this ramp which will put you on Industrial Blvd

Follow Industrial Blvd west for approximately 5 miles.
You will pass under a “Panasonic” footbridge, and up and over the business district overpass.

There will be a McDonalds on your right
Just past the McDonalds you will come to a stoplight controlled intersection (Garita de Otay) with a tire shop to your right.

Turn right here for the “regular” Otay crossing which is approximately 1 mile ahead.

SENTRI Directions

As you proceed west on Industrial Blvd, you will pass under a “Panasonic” footbridge.
There will be a fire station on your left, and you will come to a stoplight controlled intersection with a PEMEX station on your left.

This intersection is Jose Lopez Portillo Oriente. There is a school on your right and another school at your 1:00 position.

Turn right at this intersection and proceed about 4 blocks to a major 4-way stoplight intersection. This intersection will be Bella Artes.

Turn left onto Bella Artes and proceed about 4 blocks. You will come to a stoplight intersection (Josefa Rendon Ibarra). .....OK the tricky part….there is a car wash at your
1:00 position….turn right onto Ibarra as if you were going into the car wash …….but don’t!!!!!....continue your right turn, center up on Ibarra and you will be on a direct course for the Otay SENTRI lanes……..

NOTE…….if you drive past the car wash and do not turn right as directed above, take the on ramp on your right just past the car wash. This will put you into the regular crossing lanes for Otay.

I think Blvd 2000 is a few miles longer. but faster in time, and it's easier to get to, less wait.

Not to hijack this very good thread but, can anyone explain the rationale that Homeland Security uses to ban anyone that has ever been fingerprinted by police,(regardless of outcome) from getting a Sentri or NEXUS pass - but it's OK for them to cross in regular lanes:?:

Bob....you nneed to clarify....I have been fingerprinted numerous times while in the military and my civilian jobs. I received a SENTRI with no problem

k-rico - 2-25-2010 at 02:05 PM

When the SENTRI program started, a police record (including arrests and convictions) did not automatically disqualify an applicant. A study was done comparing the El Paso and Otay offices and it was found that people disqualified by one office would not have been disqualified by the other and vice-versa. Too much was left up to the judgement of the employees reviewing the applicants and they weren't operating with clear guidelines.

Therefore a change was made that disqualified applicants if they had any arrests/convictions on their record, regardless of what and when. I think this is what durrellrobert was referring to.

Another change has been recently implemented that again allows reviewers to exercise judgement and people with records may still qualify depending upon the circumstances.

Those of you who were disqualified during the period where any mark on your record disqualified you might want to try again.

bajaguy - 2-26-2010 at 08:56 AM

Detentions or arrests without convictions can be expunged.

Must work with the District Attorney in the county where the event took place. Will also have to work through the court as usually a court order is needed.

Some convictions can also be expunged. Same process.

Best first step is to contact the Court Clerks office of the District/Superior court in the jurisdiction where the event occurred.

Bring all of the paperwork with you to the SENTRI office

k-rico - 2-26-2010 at 06:43 PM

So if you are filling out a form and it asks "have you ever been arrested or convicted of a crime?" and you have but you had your record expunged you can answer "no" and be telling the truth?

woody with a view - 2-26-2010 at 06:47 PM

yes!

the convictions will still appear on your rap sheet but above them it will show the expungement.

you can legally say you never were convicted, except where security is concerned. it's pretty easy to do. don't ask how i know!

k-rico - 2-26-2010 at 06:50 PM

"except where security is concerned"

SENTRI passes are issued by the Department of Homeland Security.

I don't get it, I thought you can't change history.

woody with a view - 2-26-2010 at 06:59 PM

security = applying for a job were secret type clearances are required. then you must say you were convicted and expunged. it's probably a good idea to say the same every time so whoever is reading your job/Sentri application doesn't think you're trying to sneak something past them.

I said fingerprinted by POLICE (as in arrested) for having loaded deer rifle in truck.

durrelllrobert - 2-27-2010 at 11:58 AM

The real question is why you can still enter via the regular lanes? Doesn't keep criminals out of US just out of Sentri lane :fire:

beachbum1A - 2-27-2010 at 03:31 PM

BUT, aren't we getting side tracked here? Remember way back to the original question that opened up this thread. Remember that a lot of us still prefer to use San Yesidro and not waste extrs miles (18) AND time (20 min.) going through Otay Mesa.

In the case of my arrest for having loaded deer rifle in truck I just paid a fine to the local JP and therefore there is no court record to have expunged or sealed, but arrest still shows up as a weapons charge for Sentri pass.:fire::fire:

This - we would like the choice. The only way we know was the "left at the 'scissors' glorietta, over the bridge - left at the next glorietta..." But the last two time we've tried it - it was closed.

I live in playas and use the SY SENTRI lanes. There are three ways to get to them that I know of and none of them are easy to describe.

Here's what I have been doing for the past 3 years.

After you get off the toll road you'll be on second street. You can just stay on that or take the border highway, I prefer second street. When you get to the border there will be one lane that goes to Colonia Federal. It's the far right lane just to the left of the concrete barriers. The other lanes go to the regular border crossing lanes, don't use those, get the Colonia Federal lane.

Follow that around until you get to the big traffic circle. be sure to stay in the left lane as you approach the circle. Make a U turn at the circle. Sounds strange but you'll see.

After you make the U turn follow the road as it curves to the right.

You'll come upon a 3 way split. Two lanes curve to the left, one to the right. Stay in the rightmost lane that curves to the left. That would be the middle lane of the the three choices.

You'll quickly come upon a stop sign with a No Left Turn sign. Make a left turn and you are in the SENTRI lane. EVERYBODY that takes this route makes the left at the No Left Turn sign. Don't worry about it.

That's the fastest way to get to the San Ysidro SENTRI lanes from the west.

Avoid crossing on weekdays before 10:30 AM. If you must all bets are off. The cops are on the streets redirecting traffic as they need to to avoid gridlock downtown. I once tried around 8 AM and got redirected so many times I gave up and went back to playas. There was probably some way to get to the SENTRI lanes, I just couldn't find it, all approaches were blocked.

Bob.....contact the District Attorney's office in the jurisdiction where the event occurred and ask about the procedure
