American Car In Mexico 14 years needing Registering in Mexico

OK, here is flip side of a question that was posted on American car that was disabled and someone wanting to destroy it down in Mexico. What if, you have an American Car that was taken into Mexico 14 years ago the happy couple split and the ex-wife has the car which is no problem. The ex-wife is a Mexican Citizen and is worried about how to register the vehicle in Mexico due to the length of time that has gone by. Does she just go to the Mexican DMV with her title showing her name on title (ex-husband is no longer in Mexico in U.S.A. and not coming back both names on title) and see if they will let her register it or will they conficate it from her due to the length of time it has been in Mexico. It has California plates with her first name on it, yes hers as I said they once were a happy couple, ah such is life. What are the guesses on how to get this vehicle legally registered in Mexico now by her? She is driving it now but every once in while gets stopped for the "bite" and she really does not have the money to keep being a victim of the "bite." Thanks for any suggestions-------- bajafun777

She can get an ONAPAFA sticker(not sure if I spelled it right). It's a precursor to importation by a Mexican National. Gringos can get them too.

there is another agency too besides onapafa...martha just used it

i forget the name ...p something

it was 1/2 price and good for 10 years too

a fifteen year old car was 2100 pesos at onapafa and
1100 pesos at the other place

onapafa is a political organization protesting importation laws here
gringos cannot get involved in politics

Well, she use to be around Mexicali area but now down in Los Mochis and there for 14 years with the car. Saw her on a trip south on Mainland Mexico and this car think always has her in fear as only means of transportation. She is so afraid of losing it that I was trying to figure out how to just get it licensed in Mexico but do not want to tell her something which then gets it taken from her. bajafun777

does it have a current tags in ca.? baja laws are different than the mainland laws when it comes to vehicles.

She is a cousin to my wife and she has dual citizenship, so she has her Mexican voter registration,passport etc. She had lived in Mexico most of her life as her mother was a Mexican citizen who worked for schools in Mexico. My wife's uncle died in Mexico leaving my wife's cousin and her mother to live off his social security benefits and her small school monies. Howevere,that is no more as she is too old and her mother also died so she is alone totally since her divorce 14 years ago. So, again just trying to get the best suggestions to start the process to take this stressor off her. Life is too short for panic every time you go somewhere in your car. Her ex-husband told her to keep the car as he took the truck and both parted without any drama. Later--------- bajafun777

No current tags since 14 years ago as she has been in Mexico with the car living all that time with her mother. They had a sticker 14 years ago to take it down to Los Mochis but she never came back to States with the car since then. Since the license plate has her first name on it I think it confuses the local cops somewhat but not all thus the "bite." bajafun777

I hope she can find a way but.... When I got my Mexican citizenship a few years back I owned (and still do) 2 vehicles that are California plated. One came in pre computers and has no import papers the other came in later and has all the import papers. The problem is once you are a citizen you have to follow the rules of importing a car that Mexicans do and rightfully so. Well neither one can be legalized due to the fact that they are both over 10 yrs. old. I now have a Mexican plated car for trips but still use the other 2 around town. Now I risk losing them to the Federales if caught. Ni modo.

Her car is 24 years old so such is life and her dual citizenship puts a strain on everything also it seems. Her ex-husband immigrated to States with our help when they were married and they are still friends but marriage just did not work for them. So, hopefully somebody has a suggestion that can help both of us as exceptions are always part of a rule since they have this dual citizenship thing in Mexico, hopefully. get her a new(er) car that is in the country legally. a 1986? sell it and buy her something cool!

she had to get a permit to take it in to mainland mexico to begin with?

los mochis is not the best place to leave your ex wife either. must have really not liked her when you split. It is a pretty bad place worst than tj.
tell her to leave her car and head north.

the tj bad guys come from los mochis.

I don't know if you can, in the sense that Bob is talking about, like hiring an attorney to get you through the process, but I personally know of at least two gringos who have gone through the process and are driving ONAPAFFA cars. It is just like the senior citizen card, some people have been able to get them from their local office, the officials in Santa Rosalia have told me no. So, the only answer to this deal is to talk to the ONAPAFFA office in your area and ask about getting registrered. I know they exist on the mainland but do not know if they are in this particular town in question.

I will check with the ONAPAFFA office once I find it to see what can happen. Appreciate the suggests and again this is my wife's cousin, not my ex-wife and I did try to get her another car but she wants to keep the one she has, as she just uses it around town. She says no need for anything different and does not want to see anyone spend money on something else when this one running fine. As with most things in Mexico you just have to get lucky and find the right person that is willing to assist you, LOL. Again thanks for the suggestions. bajafun777

onappafa IS NOT IMPORTATION

onappafa does not have the legal authority to import

onappafa are a group of Mexicans that protest annual taxes on imported cars and trucks

the license and sticker that onappafa issues is not an import permit

it is a membership fee to join the protest group

you are required to pay a fee to remain in the group

you are issued a sticker for your car or truck and
told that only the member or family member for (200 pesos extra)
may drive the vehicle
you get an onappafa "license"
you still need a mexican drivers license

if you are stopped by the police for an infraction or
inspection you are told to fill out a form they provide and
they will "protest" for you

onappafa is a lobby in Mexico City that is calling for change in taxation laws

fees paid to onappafa are not included in the costs to import the car
the moneys go to a lobbying effort

this is a political issue and foreiginers are NOT ALLOWED to get involved

Legally...(my opinion ONLY) onappafa members are in violation of state and federal laws and at risk of having their vehicles confiscated at any time...
this could happen when local officals will no longer tolerant their protest

just be careful
if i could do it legally... i would in a heartbeat

Yes she is Mexican citizen now as I had to pay an attorney to assist her in getting her dual citizenship. Even though her mom was a Mexican citizen and worked in the elementary schools for over 35 years and she went to elementary school and graduated high school there it was still a mess to fix. Cost me over $2,000 to take care of all of the paperwork and trying to work with Texas to get her original birth certificate to show her mother was a Mexican citizen was a double trouble. Had to have the attorney use the Consul in San Diego to get this release of her birth certificate from Texas, they were being a royal pain. That getting all this accomplished and getting her new passport from U.S. besides while waiting for the Mexican citizenship to be finalized was just a lot of time and effort. Just hope this car thing can get worked out or maybe I will get her a golf cart to go around town, LOL. Again, she had the paperwork way back when to bring the car into Mexico but once divorced she stayed with it in Mexico, she never brought it back out. It was over 10 years old when she had it down there and since she grew up in Los Mochis they were use to seeing her and her mother in the vehicle around town. Thanks, bajafun777
