Gotta have a picture of that. Walking west from the Guadalupe Valley with a couple of bottles of wine and a surfboard under your arm. Epic!shari - 2-27-2010 at 08:49 AM
It is so difficult in a situation like this for people in low lying areas to respond appropriately..most dont believe it could happen and shrug it
off. We have had other warnings and nothing ever happens...till it does! I think it is a wise move to warn the campers at the lagoon just in case.
I remember in Tofino when there was a tsunami warning...we all ran to the beer store and it sold out in a very short time...great party up on the hill
by the beach!...be safe all...I'm sure it's nothing but ya never know.
here is a neat map about how tsunami's travel.

South facing beaches, including those in Baja and SoCal may get a tidal surge.Bob H - 2-27-2010 at 09:20 AM
This earthquake occurred at the boundary between the Nazca and South American tectonic plates. The two plates are converging at a rate of 80 mm per
year. The earthquake occurred as thrust-faulting on the interface between the two plates, with the Nazca plate moving down and landward below the
South American plate.
Coastal Chile has a history of very large earthquakes. The February 27 shock originated about 230 km north of the source region of the magnitude 9.5
earthquake of May, 1960-the largest instrumentally recorded earthquake in the world. This great earthquake killed 1655 people in southern Chile and
unleashed a tsunami that crossed the Pacific, killing 61 people in Hawaii, Japan, and the Philippines. Approximately 870 km to the north of the
February 27 earthquake is the source region of the magnitude 8.5 earthquake of November, 1922. This great quake significantly impacted central Chile,
killing several hundred people and causing severe property damage. The 1922 quake generated a 9-meter local tsunami that inundated the Chile coast
near the town of Coquimbo; the tsunami also crossed the Pacific, washing away boats in Hilo harbor, Hawaii. The magnitude 8.8 earthquake of February
27, 2010 ruptured the portion of the South American subduction zone separating these two massive historical earthquakes.
A large vigorous aftershock sequence can be expected from this earthquake.wessongroup - 2-27-2010 at 09:24 AM

They? The surge is supposed to run up the coast of Baja and impact south-facing beaches... right now (8:15-8:45) if I got my Zulu times right.
After that you can worry about Hawaii.
THERE IS NO TSUNAMI WATCH OR WARNING IN EFFECT AT THIS TIME FOR THE EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA COAST. HOWEVER...DANGEROUS CURRENTS AND SURGES ARE
POSSIBLE IN HARBORS AND BAYS. THIS THREAT IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN AROUND 1202 PM PST TODAY.

I understand CNN is reporting this.
Even if it is just a high tide surge...right now in our area the tide is extremely high due to full moon spring tide...one of the highest of the year
so another foot or two would definately flood many low lying areas....I'm listening for that sucking sound of the tide going out......durrelllrobert - 2-27-2010 at 09:43 AM

.Tsunami Warning in Hawaii People Urged to Move to Higher Ground
.
A tsunami warning has been issued for all the coasts of Hawaii, as an aftereffect of the 8.8 magnitude earthquake that shook Chili in the early
morning hours of February 27, 2010. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has issued a warning that the first tsunami waves are expected to reach Hawaii
at 11:19 Pacific Standard Time, which is 4:19 EST.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center is calling for urgent action to protect lives and property in Hawaii. There is also a tsunami warning for the coast
of California and Alaska, but the warning is at a lower level than the warning for Hawaii.
According to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, tsunamis that affect Hawaii originate from distant sources where tectonic plates are in collision. A
tsunami that originates in Chile takes about ten hours to get to Hawaii.
Officials in Hawaii will sound the warning whistles at about 6:00 AM Pacific Time. People in areas that are predicted to be high risk will be urged to
leave their homes and business and move to higher ground, or evacuate to safety. The tsunami should reach Hawaii at about 11:19 AM PST. The tsunami
could cause damage to property along coastlines of all islands in the State of Hawaii. Urgent action is being taken to protect lives and property in
Hawaii.
A tsunami is a series of long ocean waves. Each individual wave crest can last 5 to 15 minutes and flood coastal areas. The danger can continue for
many hours after the initial wave. The height of the tsunami waves cannot be predicted and the first wave may not be the largest. Tsunami waves can
wrap around islands, so all shores are at risk no matter which direction they face. Debris picked up and carried by the tsunami wave can increase the
destructive power of the wave.

So now the eyes turn to Hawaii. Plenty of time to prepare there. Bet every camera on the island will be live on CNN when it arrives there.
I do like the Tsunami warnings and get the automated e-mail alerts (usually treated as spam). I do wish it was more actionable- a list of coastal
cities with the local impact time would be helpful. I know the format is for scientists- but everyone talked about the surge coming- but nobody said
exactly when to pop the beer open and watch. (Except for Hawaii)shari - 2-27-2010 at 11:41 AM

I was in Hawaii in 1961 during a "Tidal Wave Alert." That's what they called it. When the word went out, people everywhere were loading their cars

East Cape Report
Interesting day. The ocean receded an abnormal amount for a while and then it filled back in a bit. Rocks would be sticking out for a few minutes, and
then they would go under. Not like when the swell covers them, but longer.
I paddled out around mid day on the stand up board and noticed lots of strange currents and eddies. It was low tide, but lots of rocks were sticking
up that don't usually show. I kept thinking that if the outside reef shows itself, I'm outta' here. Then the submerged wreck in the bay made a showing
and I decided that was it. I got out and watched from the deck of the house a good 45 feet above sea level. The swell has been only about 2 feet and I
never did see a "wave" that would indicate the tsunami. Just the unusual rise and fall of the ocean.Bajahowodd - 2-27-2010 at 05:57 PM

Jesse. If you've seen any of the photos or footage from Chile, you must know that there was major devastation. That said, folks in that region are
accustomed to earthquakes and are fairly well prepared. Utilities have been damaged, with poles breaking and lines snapping. Not being able to get in
touch with someone down there is understandable. If there's no power, it's hard to have communications. I truly hope for the best, my friend. I know
it's frustrating. But in actuality, modern technology has made it possible to even know about such an event contemporaneously. Years ago, it might
have taken days for folks in other countries to even be aware that such an event happened.

I got a call this morning from my son who lives in Maui. He said the tsunami sirens went off at 5:30 this morning and everyone was told to head for
higher ground. Not surprizingly, he also said it looked like a disaster movie with incredibly long lines at the gas stations and grocery stores.
They expect the tsunami to hit around 1:20 PST. I'm glued to the TV waiting for further news
I was in Hawaii in 1961 during a "Tidal Wave Alert." That's what they called it. When the word went out, people everywhere were loading their cars
with bird cages and clothes and heading for the hills.
The Wave never got there, but ironically it rained six inches in twelve hours over night. What a mess.
Dennis, I was in Hawaii for the big one in 1960. I was only 7 at the time but I remember being woken up in the middle of the night and heading for
higher ground very distinctly. I suppose this was the one that hit Hilo so hard.
I assume your dad was in a branch of the service..........which one? We were living on base at Kaneohe Bay Marine Corp Air Facility.
Was just reading about the 1960 earthquake in Chile. That is still the strongest earthquake ever measure. THE QUAKE LASTED FOR 11 MINUTES!!!!
