homemade tequila from Jalisco

Anyone ever had the home brew tequilas that comes from Jalisco? A Mexican friend of mine brought a few bottles back from Jalisco - he poured it in empty old tequila bottles to get it across the border. It is basically Mexican moonshine - homebrew tequila.

I thought it was the best tequila ever - sweet and smokey, and you could drink a lot, but never get too drunk - sort of hallucinogenic actually.

Anyone know the name of this stuff or if anyone sells it in Baja. It has no label...garage brew.

And it is not mezcal or pulque. Would like to find some more - great poker playing drink, it actually helps you play better!

Unlike making grain based 'shine', Tequila is a very labor and product intensive process. The only folks I know who make genuine Tequila moonshine are the Dons who put up their own private reserve.

The chances of finding the 'real deal' are as remote as finding a genuine Cuban cigar.

It's probably Via Viva or some other low-end, mainly cane based liquor colored with coke.

Many moons ago I was on a cruise with "family" and when we hit Puerto Vallarta I had had enough. I got off the ship, found a tourist guy with a 4x4 and said "I cannot stand this! Please take me away from here...anywhere...give me a tour of this area and I'll leave it to you where we go". (great thing was he then took the 4x4 to where his mom worked at a school and we got her car cause the gas was cheaper!) He was so jazzed in that he didn't have to do the usual tourist crap. Filled the cooler with Pacificos (he was amazed when i asked for that and not Coronas) and headed into the mountains. I think the town was Tuito (sorry for the spelling if wrong) and went down some alley and a stopped. A lady came out with Fanta bottles filled with liquid. He laughed and said it was "Raicilla"...moonshine so to speak of the area. What a great day. At some point we picked up his buddies from a construction site up in the jungle and ended up at Le Kliff restaurant where we drank it. VERY smokey and delicious in its own dangerous way. I guess this all has nothing to do with Baja except for the spirit (spirits?) of the adventure!

There is some in San Felipe. The still only produces 2 liters a day and is made by some old guy for him. lol

It is great stuff. I just don't want to give too much info yet as I am hoping to get some next week if any is available. Not the biggest secret, but I just gots to get some.

That sounds like the stuff - Raicilla! Yep, smokey and sweet - with a nice bite, but high quality stuff. This is not can juice. And you don't get a hangover from it cause it is so pure.

This is like a old grandma's family tradition sectret salsa. The stuff I had was better than any top shelf tequila you can buy in the store.

Thanks for the link - I am positive this is the stuff - Racailla. My friend said he got it from a friend's uncle, cousing, something like that, and he made it himself - but it was technically illegal (especially to transport across the border, but using an old tequila bottle worked fine to get across the border.)

Thanks - next time in Jalisco, I know what to ask for.

The San Felipe bar owner sounds a lot more accessible than traveling to Jalisco....any more hints? Does he call his stuff raicilla?

RAICILLA...the myth...the facts

An article from the local newspaper called "Hola Amigos"

Raicilla, pronounced "rye-see-ya", is the local moon shine. It is distilled in crude, primitive stills from a fermented mash made from the roots ( raicilla means "little root" ) of the maguey plant. It is a strong violent liquor of greatly varying quality, and usually more than 100 proof. Since it is produced without government license, and sold without government tax, it is illegal in the same sense that moonshine is illegal in the United States. Its production is one of the traditional local arts, and it is found only in this area.

Since it is higher in alcoholic content than most commercially available liquors even a small amount can produce a sudden, strong, and unpredictable drunkeness. There are many reports of violent gastric reactions, and temporary motor paralysis. It has a strong, and persistent reputation for producing an aphrodisiac effect in women, but causing temporary impotency in men. This can lead to a social situation of confused, and conflicting desires. It gives a rough hangover.

The myth that it produces a psychedelic effect is a product of a raicilla-inflamed imagination. The myth is based (insofar as it is based on anything at all ) on the mistaken belief that it contains mescaline from the local San Pedro cactus. Although the San Pedro cactus does contain some mescaline and has, at times, been used as part of the fermented mash, the chemical mescaline is not volatile ( it crystallizes rather than vaporizes ) and so cannot go through the distillation process, but remains a residue in the mash.

Raicilla can be tested for alcohol content by pouring a bit in a saucer and lighting a match to the rising vapor. If it burns it is of high proof, and probably has not been watered down.

Since raicilla is cheap, strong, and readily available, it is most widely and frequently used drinks among the local borrachos (drunks). The raicilla-borracho can still sit and talk ( lucidly, he thinks ) long after he has lost the ability to walk. He does not know this until after he stands up.

For those who drink alcohol at all, a taste of raicilla is an almost essential part of the full local experience. When you drink it for the first time, you should be in secure surroundings among people you know and trust and use cautious moderation.

There are a few restaurants in Puerto Nuevo selling homemade Tequila. Made at home using Viva Villa and Coke.

I have also had very bad Raicilla - someone gave it to me - he bought it from a street vendor who also sold blankets, and other Mexican tourist crap.

It was in a novelty bottle that was covered in plastic that was supposed to look like wood.

Whatever the fluid was they put in there was disgusting - rubbing alcohol, terpentine?

But the good stuff - is really smoothe and tasty - and slightly psychedelic.

It also makes my ears turn red - and smile so much that the corners of my mouth almost touch my ears!

I got a girlfriend...

Got some in PV through a friends, cousins, uncle from the jungles. This was not watered down as some are, very similar to everclear, About 180 proof. A friend who had laryngitis drank it one night with me and the next day could talk again :lol:

Mine came to me in an old bleach bottle with masking tape to hold lid on As Dennis says it is illegal and a little goes along ways

if you drink enough of any booze, primo or rot gut - you're gonna get a hangover - booze is toxic.
anyone who says he doesn't get a hangover is simply drinking in proper moderation for his bodies ability to metabolize the sauce.
