New boat tracking system in Mexico

Osprey - 3-1-2010 at 08:06 AM

The last couple of days saw some campers on our beach. They work for Conapesca and are busy going up and down the coast putting into play new regulations for commercial fishing boats. Each boat pays 4,000 pesos for a new computer chip which will help identify legal boats from those which might be involved in illegal activities. It's just for charter boats but it comes at a time when many charter operators are hard pressed to keep their businesses going. We have more than 200 boats in Palmas bay working charter so it will have people talking and wondering just where the money goes, how much good it will do. I think it's an annual fee and includes some form of insurance protection.

They were in our neighbourhood a few months ago and put chips in all the registered vessels here too...as well as had thier painter repaint the registration numbers on all the pangas at the coops too.

The new age Al Capone at work. Measures like this are only as good as enforcement. How good has that been in the past?

Geez, where can I get one?

I had to get that chip for our boat also. Its so when they are looking for people doing bad things they can easily pick out the people that are legal. I think its a good thing. Its a step in helping the authorities on the water identify who is who faster and easier.

If you dont have the chip in your boat you cant work.

The sportfising boats with permits were chipped in Loreto a couple months ago. We're upgrading to a larger boat but it won't have a chip so I guess we'll be incognito.

When I stayed at a friends place at 6Th point in San Juanico. The local fishing coop had a radar station set up to watch for illegal boats coming into the area and poaching.

Is it just for Mexican commercial fishing boats?

What's to stop the " BAD GUYS" from getting these chips installed on their boats.
