Hi Baja Lovers...we live in La Bocana, BCS ... and we just started a bike club for the local kids...and urgently need 8 bikes for an upcoming race !
WELL - THOSE WORDS WERE THE START OF AN ADVENTURE THAT HAS BEEN WONDERFUL AS WELL AS ONE OF THE MOST DIFFICULT WE'VE EVER UNDERTAKEN !! And folks, thanks to YOUR kind hearted souls, we now have 21 bikes ... I will be posting pictures soon.
Merry Christmas all, thanks from the bottom of my corazon.

That is great. For the last few years we have been involved with the Bike Club in Bahia Asuncion, the Lobos Marinos. We had planned on going to the recent race at Ojo de Liebre, but had to leave.

Fantastic to see another team! For a real start on helmets, a former nomad collected a bunch of them at the big segunda sale that happens once a week in Ensenada---I forget the name, but someone will remember it.

Other donations followed and it has been a so much fun for us. They are wanting us to hurry back because we have a shopping list.

The people involved in these bike clubs in the Mulege Distrist are great.

Keep at it--hope to see you in La Bocana or in Bahia Asuncion.

On edit---since you have a B&B, do you accept pets?

BajaBlanca - 3-13-2010 at 08:52 PM

motorcross bikes would be awesome .... you are in Punta Abreojos, have we met ???? Blanca

BAJACAT - 3-13-2010 at 08:56 PM

BAJABLANCA, where are you guys located, Im heading that way next week, I might have a few bikes, to give away.

BajaBlanca - 3-13-2010 at 09:05 PM

We are located 600 miles south of the border in La Bocana, BCS. We have a wonderful B & B .. to get to us, you would go past Vizcaino, take the first right towards Punta Abreojos, drive for almost an hour, pass thru P Abreojos, head north to La Bocana. Find us on Calle Erizo northern end !! One of the most laid back wonderful villages in southern Baja (as you can tell, I am a bit partial!!!)

Where are you headed to ? If this is too far, I can give you an address in Ensenada and they will send the bikes down free. COOPERATIVA PROGRESO - 234 CALLE ABASOLO BETWEEN CORTEZ AND AGUILAS. COLONIA INDEPENENCIA 22840. Just ask for Panchito and tell him it is for Blanca and Les in La Bocana for the CLUB DE CICLISMO ....

thankssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss

BAJACAT - 3-13-2010 at 09:11 PM

I will be in Asuncion around the 24 -27 of March, my destination is Bahia concepcion.. and on my way back i will stop in Asuncion. around those dates.. Jose

BajaBlanca - 3-13-2010 at 09:22 PM

I would love to see if we can somehow get the bikes from you before the 28th which is when we are having our FIRST ever bike race with other clubs coming to our village and 6 of the 8 kids in our club do NOT have bikes ..... our phone number is 156-0056 (once you are in southern Baja) .... If you can tell me when you will be passing by Vizcaino, we could perhaps meet you there and grab the bikes on your way down ....

BAJACAT - 3-13-2010 at 09:35 PM

I can meet you on my way down to Bahia Concepcion. I will be leaving San Diego on the 20th around 4:00 in the morning.I don't know how long will take me from San Diego to Viscaino.let me see if I can get you maybe 4 bikes how big you want them..

That is wonderful. We are still working on donations etc. for the bike team in Bahia Asuncion, but this one in La Bocana is REAL new.

It is such a great activity for the children, but not a cheap one.

Wish we were going to be there for the first ever race in La Bocana.

BajaBlanca, I will answer your U2U with some more ideas for supporting those kids.

Diana

Just checking in. This sounds like a good cause. I wish you the best of luck in getting bikes.

BajaBlanca - 3-13-2010 at 09:46 PM

let me talk to Les and Joaquin and see who can meet you ... it can be in Vizcaino or really right at the exit to Punta Abreojos/La Bocana. I will get back to you on that as soon as I can

Do you have room for other stuff that has been donated ?? I have no idea what they have but owner Matt at BLACK MOUNTAIN BIKES in San Diego started a collection for us that will be ready Friday the 19th...(which we could cerainly shorten if you can bring what they have ????

Thanks so much !!

BajaBlanca - 3-13-2010 at 09:49 PM

Toners !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How are you dude !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! When the heck are you coming down ??? Aren't you tired yet of the cold ????????????? We had a huge lunch here today to celebrate Gary (neighbor) 69th birthday .... we all overate !!

It is so exciting to work with the local kids ... they won last week on borrowed bikes when Les and I took them to Ojo de Liebre

I really need uniforms for them but that will be up to the coop - the talked to the presidente municipal last week and he promised them ... they may be in for a hard lesson in politics :)

Besides the helmet suggestion I sent to you, uniforms are important. Besides the co-op, many of the teams have other local stores donate and then they include their name on their uniforms.

With the BA team, they were close to enough money for the uniforms, and then with a VERY generous gift from a nomad, who had only visited Bahia Asuncion once and other donations came from nomads and others who have never been close to Bahia Asuncion; one never knows.

So, the uniforms became a reality and this is what they can do.

They can turn this adorable child

into this very serious competitor

Sorry for posting these on your thread, but I wanted you to see what I was talking about in our U2Us :-) :-)

While most of the money donations are better spent in the states as everything is so expensive in our area, these donations really pushed the team forward.

Also, some money donations are also good for helping the local families with gas money for traveling to these events.

The Best of Luck, and while we remain loyal to our Bahia Asuncion team, I will be cheering for your new team.

Wish we were going to be there for the first race in La Bocana, but hopefully we will be in town for the Bahia Asuncion race.

Diana

BajaBlanca - 3-14-2010 at 08:42 PM

Diana - that picture of the litle boy is stupendous. My boys really really want uniforms ... we are working hard to get the coop to put up the cash for those and then be able to have the coop logo on them .... The uniform really makes a team a team for sure !!

Rafael - I wil have someone meet the trucks at the Hiway Exit to Punta Abreojos/Campo Fisher but thanks for your offer !!! If I may be so bold as to beg: Please bring down bikes and helmets firstly and then anything sports as the goal is to have a sports club with ping pong, volleyball, basketball, snorkeling

BAJACAT: Can you give Matt a call at Black Mtn Bicycles and ask him what he has ... I really have no idea what they have collected: 9158 Mira Mesa Blvd., 92126 (858) 566-0712. And if there is still extra room on your trucks, my sister has some donations which include a surf board for the surf club (I know, I know) .... she lives in Pt Loma

God bless all of you and thanks from the bottom of my heart

Hit up every business in town and have their names also put on the uniforms. If you want, I can send you pictures that show not just our uniforms, but those of some other teams----they all have lots of advertisements. You can tell the local businesses that surely they want that kind of advertisement.

I can also send you pictures of some of the races so they see that these teams are serious.

ALL MT. BIKE PARTS!

Ron_Perry - 3-15-2010 at 09:27 PM

Hi, and I hope I can help. As a long time biker, may I suggest that you ask for all and everything related to mt bikes. To keep a "fleet" of bikes running, it is great to have a stock of used/broken bikes, and parts to work from. I am presently keeping 8 bikes running in our family, spare parts are a premium!
If you have a central location to keep these bikes and parts, you should be good to go. A local mechanic can work wonders with mucho spare parts.
I do not know when my next trip will be, but I will start a collection now. I do have already a few old helmets, and a ton of parts. I also could hit up my local bike shops for parts. Keep asking Nomads who will be heading down in the future to grab what they can. Good luck, Ron

BAJACAT - 3-15-2010 at 09:46 PM

Ron thats a good idea, I used to ride still have my bike ( SPECIALIZED FSR ELITE MTB).I have a few parts that i can take with me...

BajaBlanca - 3-16-2010 at 07:29 AM

Ron, that is really really an excellent idea and I hadn't even thought about it:spingrin:

thanks to all of you .... the response has been overwhelmingly wonderful

and yesterday the bloys blazed their trail and some of them helped me do out civic duty and cleaned up La Bocana

Rightnow I ma on my way to visit the Biosphere and see if we can get equipment to start a proper landfill...I need positive thoughts !!

gracias esp to BajaCat who got the BOCANA BEACH BIKER boys to put megasmiles on their face yesterday when I told them the bikes were a GO !! And the smiles kinda waned a little when I told them their grades have to be good and family input was important too ... decided to do this since one kid, whose dad passed away last year, is having some troubles in school ... and subsequently mom ....

shari - 3-16-2010 at 09:23 AM

Hey Ron...welcome to the Nomad sandbox...how cool you jumped in to help on your first post...THAT is the Nomad spirit!!!! And I can tell you that Blanca has that same spirit...she is really trying to help out her newly adopted community which I applaud her for....so she deserves any assistance we can provide.

bajacat...why dont we do the handoff here at our place in Asuncion...make a party out of it!!! Blanca will come here to collect the bikes so that way you dont have to arrange a time and place along the highway...dates in baja are hard to keep.

thanks all for your generosity.

BajaBlanca - 3-16-2010 at 06:11 PM

We are Ok with meeting on the highway or meeting in Asuncion, if it can be on the 20th - otherwise, we prefer the highway for thehandoff and Asuncion whenever to meet up for a fun day :)

BajaCat - you are welcome to stay with us overnight on your way down as well - our B & B welcomes you and yr brother in law !!! On us, of course !!

BAJACAT - 3-16-2010 at 06:29 PM

Blanca thanks for the offer, I talk to your sister today oh man she is more excited about my trip than me, she was telling about some places to see in Baja, we are going to meet by th YMCA and she is going to bring me the stuff where I work...and thursday to see Matt, i was only able to get 3 bikes, it was kind off of short notice. We collected about 50 bikes for the Bajanomad Dia de reyes event.. maybe in the near future I can score more bikes for you. i will take you some of my spare parts..

durangotang - 3-17-2010 at 02:06 PM

We need to talk... I race DH up here in CO and run one of the programs to give helmets away to kids locally...

What age group/sizes of helmets do you need? If others here would be willing to help me with the shipping costs and/or get a chain of people to get them down there (assuming I have the right sizes)... I can send you MTB helmets :)

DianaT - 3-17-2010 at 02:17 PM

Just one word about helmets. They will appreciate any and all helmets. However, when possible, the teams down here really prefer the ones with the visors with possible----especially for the older children who ride the trails in the races. The sun can be very intense.

We have bought a few nice helmets on sale and then had some of the older kids earn their helmet at a very reduced rate----just another idea and it helps to keep the older ones involved and responsible. And they all share EVERYTHING with the other members.

Blanca, does your team have a name yet?

Sorry if I offended you, but our Bahia Asuncion team received some helmets from one of the directors of the Giant International Mountain Bike team and they did not have visors----so not sure how I would assume that your helmets would have visors??? They love anything with the Giant name, however.

It is a good thing if your helmets have visors.

Our team also really appreciated the donated used riding clothes---so if you have any around, you might send this new team some---especially riding shirts.

the Nomad Express shipping cooperative works really well...let us know when you want to send something and we can ask the next visitors coming to bring it down...it's easiest if you can get it sent to them.

msteve1014 - 3-17-2010 at 05:57 PM

Hey Blanca, We wont be down until July or august, but we should have a mostly empty truck at that time. Keep in touch, maybe we can help then. Mike& Meg

BajaBlanca - 3-17-2010 at 09:06 PM

hi all !!!

Durangotang ... lets see if someone can bring the helmets, I will look at our B & B contacts and see how we can manage this !! thanks so much for your offer ...

Diana T - They chose the name BOCANA BEACH BIKERS which I just love

Bacja Cat !!! did you meet my sisters ??? hope all went well and that the cargo is already in the hold and that you are coming to our B & B :)

:yes::bounce:

shipping and bringing down stuff this Saturday

BajaBlanca - 3-17-2010 at 09:33 PM

Shari - the idea of a shipping cooperative is fantastic

Re LA BOCANA - it is easiest if someone tells us when they are coming and then we meet at the crossroads and do an exchange ... we can always ask the restarant to hold onto items for us too

the other option is to send stuff to Ensenada and our coop here has a truck that will bring almost anything to us

and there is always BAJA PACK - they ship to any bus terminal along hiway 1

So now I need someone coming from SanDiego to Baja Sur this weekend since BajaCat ended up with too many boxes to bring down for me !! ayudameeeee helpppppppppppp

BAJACAT - 3-17-2010 at 10:42 PM

Blanca, I meet Christine, I like her accent,(BRAZIL), when she speaks spanish.. Like i said on the u2u, dont worry I will make work..Im picking the bikes tomorrow and what ever else Matt has for you. from MEX-1 to your place how long and how many hours will me take to reach your place...Jose

BajaBlanca - 3-18-2010 at 08:46 AM

Jose ... great ... I am so glad you can bring everything and yes, everyone here laughs at my Spanish Brazailian accent too !! Altho' sometimes they ask me "where" in Mexico I am from and that puts a HUGE smile on my face
To get to our place: take the first exi to the right after Vizcaino = this is the exit to PUNTA ABREOJOS. Go all the way (it is 95% paved now) to Punta Abreojos. Once in the town of Punta Abreojos, look for a street called Miguel Dominguez, this is where you turn right (or head straight on depending if you are driving on the air strip). Drive along side of the lagoon into La Bocana. Stay AWAY from any sign of water on the sand – you WILL get stuck. Follow any path towards the right. Follow the main paved road in La Bocana (Calle Fundadores) to the church, turn right at the church. Take the first left. Right again onto Calle Erizo. Our house is on Calle Erizo. Big, white, 2 story, at the far north end of Calle Erizo.

From Hiway one turn off to La Bocana is about 1 hour or 100 kilometers. Make sure to fill up on gas in Vizcaino
:bounce: See you Saturday or Sunday ???? :bounce:

BAJACAT - 3-18-2010 at 08:56 PM

+Blanca, since Im leaving San diego, late on Saturday the trip to your place is out of the question, we are going to have to meet in MEX 1. I will leave saturday and will stay @ El Rosario, Sunday around 7:00 AM, i will leave to meet you guys on MEX 1, if somebody has and idea in the time frame from El Rosario to the Vizcaino are pleased let me know, that way you don't have to wait for me that long....

THIS ARE THE 4 BIKES THAT I GOT FROM DOUG

THIS 2 CAME FROM ME AND A FRIEND...

BAJACAT - 3-18-2010 at 08:58 PM

Blanca, it's about time, i only have 8 days to speend in Baja,, maybe next time.

BAJACAT - 3-18-2010 at 10:18 PM

Blanca, donde es bueno para comer en GN..

shari - 3-19-2010 at 07:23 AM

lunch or dine on Mano de Leon scallops...divine at Las Cazuelas just on the entrance to GN or if you want tacos...Cowboy Motel has the best tripa/asada combos and yummy breakfast too.

BajaBlanca - 3-19-2010 at 12:26 PM

There is a huge palapa called Mario's right before GN, on the right, just AFTER THE CHECK POINT. we ate there recently and it was really good. they also do whale watching tours, which if you never have gone, is an experience of a lifetime.

So, we will see you at the turn off to Punta Abreojos on Sunday. Look for a big white Nissan Titan truck and a blue eyed Polish American guy and a dark skinned Brazilian American gordita and you will see us !!

Breakfasts in El Rosario at Mama Espinoza'a are famous ... maybe you could do lunch in GN at Mario's. We figure that you will arrive at the Punta Abreojos turnoff at about 2, we will be there !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Since I'm off to Mulege next week to visit the Mexican relatives, I thought that a BajaNomad session would be a great way to get me pumped up for going south and what a wonderful surprise to see you here Blanca.

So, Nomads, let me just tell you what an AWESOME and COMMITTED Baja community member Blanca is...I've known her for "many moons" as a wonderfully talented English teacher in San Diego and all of you who have been contributing to her La Bocana projects should know what a huge and giving spirit you are supporting. Blanca's efforts are a version of the "Baja Energizer Bunny", it goes on and on. She genuinely loves working with others and learning about different cultures. So, all of us who have enjoyed working with her in San Diego know that her star shines brightly now in La Bocana where she is sharing her enthusiasm and love of people in so many meaningful ways!! Felcidades Blanca y espero que podemos verte muy pronto en Mulege  Besos desde San Diego

shari - 3-20-2010 at 09:39 AM

what a lovely post linsay..gracias...it's always nice to give credit where it's due and get to know nomads a bit better through personal recommendations.

Blanca has injected new energy into her community and deserves our help and support. She is a welcome new member to the board and we look forward to her insights and unique point of view as a latina who has emigrated to baja....you go girl!

Guys La Bocana is great, come and meet Blanca and Les, they are great people.. you will love it..

THIS MESSAGE, IS APROVED BY BAJACAT..

David K - 3-25-2010 at 03:17 PM

Good to hear Jose... I added BajaBlanca's B&B web page to my links on VivaBaja.com recently. Now, if we can only get away to go back there again! La Bocana was where Antonio's (BajaCactus) parents taught school many years ago, when they were the entire school staff!

BajaBlanca - 3-25-2010 at 03:42 PM

BajaCat Jose & family just left for Asuncion ...we miss them already and cannot thank them enough for their generosity :)
Come back soon all of you !! La Bocana loved having you and welcomes you back with open house :)
David K = thanks again for adding us - you should escape and check our place out, it is a paradise here
Love the story about the La Bocana teachers .... imagine that we are about to get our first secundaria soon !!

Still need bikes and helmets .... and we will be in San Diego early April !!

David K - 3-25-2010 at 04:34 PM

Antonio Sr. (BajaCactus' dad) loves to tell the story of his promotion to become principal of a new school he was being transfered to... This must have been 40+ years ago (before the Baja highway)...

When he arrived at La Bocana to meet his staff of teachers and custodians he found himself to be the entire school staff (principal, teacher, custodian...)! When he later requested another teacher so there could be two classes for all the La Bocana kids, they sent out the woman that would become his wife and Antonio Jr.'s mother!

BajaBlanca - 3-25-2010 at 06:47 PM

now that is a great story !!

Pancho, a local here in Bocana, tells me he knew Sr very well from here in Bocana. He also said that Mama Espinosa's husband was the architect for the old Fish Plant here in town .... history all around us !!

desertcpl - 3-25-2010 at 06:56 PM

great story and history,, very nice read,,

Here is Antonio Sr. and Jr. at JR's place for a small party given by the Muñoz family for us, in 2004:

Here is BajaNomad (Doug), Baja Bernie and Antonio Sr...

BajaBlanca - 3-26-2010 at 12:59 PM

David K - those are wonderful pics and we plan to stop by Baja Cactus and meet Antonio Jr

I am still in awe at the shock Sr. must have felt when he arrived to Bocana and realized everyone's life was in his hands educationally speaking !! Can u imagine the responsibility ??? We hear that Bocana kids repeatedly come out shining when tested, so whatever he started, for sure they continue the tradition well

You must have an incredible collection of photos - when I finally get the Bocana Cultural Museum here up and running, I may have to tap you up for some help :)

If you are working on a cultural museum for La Bocana, a visit with Juanita at Casa Lere in San Ignacio is a must. She has so much information, so many photos, etc. You can spend so much time there and learn so much. It will be time well spent.

I know !!! I have been there and she agreed to let me scan those gazillions of photos .... but that is project # 20,000 ... HAHAHA

Anything I can do to assit will be an honor! I may not have too much to offer for La Bocana, but I do have a pretty good Baja book and map collection and any tidbits of history I can provide will be yours!

BajaBlanca - 3-26-2010 at 05:03 PM

trust me, maps and books would be absolutely fantastic to add to the collection

so far I have
1. 2 very old meat hooks used by ranchers way back when
2. 1 very old wooden water carrier they put on mules
3. some interviews with locals who started up this village
4. a boc full of odds and ends people have given me

it is only a start
my husband has donated a part of a front beach lot for me to use once I get some bldg materials

it is all good as my kids would say !!!

BajaBlanca - 3-27-2010 at 12:30 PM

WELL .. here they are !!! The sites are up - English/Spanish - pls tell me if I made any horrific mistakes en espanol amigos !!

http://sites.google.com/site/BOCANABEACHBIKERS/

http://sites.google.com/site/clubdeciclismodebocana/

and we really, really need more bikes ... these kids are soooooooooo excited about biking now - if you are headed south - call/write/email and help me make this happen for them - we will keep the "original" BajaCat ones for the club, but I would love to come up with bikes and GIVE those deserving ones thier OWN bike for xmas .... :bounce::bounce:

I understand we came out in yesterday's sudamericano newspaper - but I haven't seen it yet

THANKS ALL FOR YOU AMAZING SUPPORT. Q DIOS LES BENDIGA GRANDEMENTE

BAJACAT - 3-29-2010 at 08:54 PM

Blanca, 2 more bikes where donated, i will pick them up this weekend.. Will you have room for another 4 maybe 5 bikes...

BajaBlanca - 3-30-2010 at 12:08 AM

AS MANY BIKES AS YOU CAN GET, I WILL CROSS THEM OVER !!!! Yesterday was the big race and La Bocana won in 6 out of 15 categories. Four of the kids won FIRST place (Nacho and brother Andres included !!). It was such a great day - Jose, how about helmets ????? can you score any at all ??? We had little ones with BIG helmets since the rule is they cant race without one...poor things...but they won anyways. I have LOTS of pics on facebook if anyone is interested. Muchas gracias

BajaBlanca - 3-31-2010 at 11:20 AM

I stand corrected - FIVE KIDS WON FIRST PLACE and one won third place. Not too shabby, if I do say so myself ... now .... I am heading over to Punta Abreojos next week to try and get those kids set up as well ... which means more bikes and more helmets and more bike gloves ...
Folks, it takes me weeks and weeks of selling used stuff here in town (I pay locals to sell) and getting goods across the border and dealing with a wonderful husband who puts up with all the excess baggage and I could really, really use some more help here ! Anything you can donate, just put BLANCA PORTELLA - LA BOCANA, BCS and drop it off al EL CRUCERO restaurant=right at the turn off to Punta Abreojos .... I talked recently to Chelly, the owner and she will hang onto anything left off til we can get it back here. There are 6 bikes with BajaCat in National City and they need to get here before our next race .... the kids want to train....ayudenme or heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelp please ;D;D;D;D;D;D;D;D;D

BajaBlanca - 4-21-2010 at 10:00 AM

the bikes can be left in ENSENADA at 234 Abasolo (main office) or 229 Abasolo (warehouse) for PROGRESO - our local fishing cooperative. Ask for Moni or Eduardo in the office or IVAN at the warehouse .... and let them know the bikes are for LA BOCANA CLUB DE CICLISMO.

We have a challenging race this Sunday in Vizcaino and could really use those bikes

BAJACAT - 4-28-2010 at 10:29 PM

Meantime, I would like to suggest that some of the ex-pats who own property here in Bahia Asuncion help out the Bike Club here in Bahia Asuncion, the Lobos Marinos. They also need support. Bikes need parts, repair, tubes, tires, on and on.

One one time visitor to Bahia Asuncion has helped a lot as well as a few who have never been here----but it is an ongoing need.

Meantime, good job Blanca and good luck with continued support.

Don't know if we will be here during the race, but if we are, I hope to meet you.

Diana

:bounce:
Shari !! I will be contacting you closer to the race and you are the BOMB (the best) as my kids wd say .. very, very kind of you. Most of the families have relatives there, probably 99%. I believe the need will be for Les and I, but I'll confrim that later on in May - and YES on the BBQ !! We can have everyone donate something to it and make it a huge convivio (this is the Brazilian party girl in me coming out !!)
Diana, sure hope you are there and if I get the bikes brought down from Ensenada in time, I will give you one of them, for your team :) They are mostly young girls' bikes, not mtn bikes, but they are great and very pretty
BajaCat - you may be getting a call from Ernesto (a friend) who has committed to getting the bikes to Ensenada !! Yahoo !!
:bounce:

DianaT - 4-30-2010 at 07:01 AM

Thanks Blanca, but that is not necessary. As I have before, I was just trying to generate some support from the local ex-pats in Bahia Asuncion for the local team.

It really is a great activity for the kids, but it is an expensive one and all parts, etc.,are so expensive if purchased down here---that is if one can even find the parts!

Diana

BajaBlanca - 4-30-2010 at 10:04 AM

thanks Diana - how many participants are in the Asuncion bike club? what is the name of the club? ours are called the BOCANA BEACH BIKERS ... this weekend they have a car wash scheduled and each one is responsible for getting 2 people to get their car washed .... payday is today so that is a GOOD thing :)
