We just got back to Colorado after traveling a couple of months in Baja. We have 1270 pesos (2 -500's, one 200, one 50 and one 20) that we didn't
spend. If anybody in the Denver area is interested we'll sell them for $100 US. RonWoooosh - 3-18-2010 at 10:56 PM

The cambios maintain a margin of app. 2%. Small price for convenience when one needs it, I suppose.
That small margin isn't where they make their money. They act as short term money lenders and charge high interest. The banks won't do it, so it
serves a purpose to the neighborhood as well.
We won't discuss what some cambios do for profit as it makes them part of the big problem.
The Peso has been gaining strength against the Dollar recently. That could change in a minute....or not.msteve1014 - 3-19-2010 at 04:13 PM
That 2% fee is a bargin when you see what some banks charge for the transaction fee at an atm, and you can get your pesos in smaller notes, not a
bunch of $500.DENNIS - 3-19-2010 at 06:38 PM

Depends on where you are. ComMex, Costco and Walmart will give $500s whereas Calimax in Maneadero won't. It would almost be cruel to give a Mixtec
field hand big bills. They would never be able to cash them. For the most part, when you get a big bill, you depend on the gas station to deal with
it, and they do.
Part of the BIG Problem ?

There's a problem with Cambios ? I've never had one. What is it they're doing ? I'm sure that they're somehow trampling on the Downtrodden, though.
Isn't everyone ?
I'm thinking about detouring through Colorado on my next trip South to take advantage of that fantastic bargain if someone doesn't beat me to it.
Or, maybe not.BajaBlanca - 3-19-2010 at 06:43 PM
I'm on my way ..... via Via Galactea
I love the $100 deal .... sweet ...El Comadante Loco - 3-19-2010 at 07:11 PM
Went to Mexicali this afternoon. Peso continues to gain against the dollar.. now 12.1 to 12.2absinvestor - 3-20-2010 at 11:45 AM
Wow, 12.1 or 12.2 to the dollar makes my 1270 pesos at $100 a great deal!! We found that other than the border towns the cambios were few and far
between. The bank ATMs gave us about 3% more but our US Bank (Wells Fargo) charged us $5 for the transaction. Seriously, we usually travel to mainland
Mexico at least once a year so it doesn't matter one way or the other if we sell them. Just thought someone in the Denver area might want to save a
stop at the border. RonWoooosh - 3-20-2010 at 11:56 AM

... and, when you wire money into Meixco be it the "free" BofA SafeSend service or a standard bank-to-bank Wire Transfer, Mexico charges a 3% tax for
everything deposited in excess of 1500 pesos.msteve1014 - 3-20-2010 at 06:01 PM
Wells Fargo changed my charge from $5.00 per transaction, to 5%. I won't be using atm's any more unless it's an emergency. I used to get this for free
when I had a lot more cash in an account earning almost no interest.
