NORRA 1000 Rally Whos Going

TMW - 3-23-2010 at 05:57 PM

The NORRA Mexican 1000 Rally is the end of April. Three stages from Mexicali to LA Bay to Lereto to La Paz. I'll be there will you.

Paulclark - 3-23-2010 at 06:35 PM

We'll probably watch the finish in La Paz --

rts551 - 3-23-2010 at 07:23 PM

we are going to watch at Campo Fisher or San Ignacio

capt. mike - 3-23-2010 at 07:43 PM

man that sounds like fun!

capt. mike - 3-23-2010 at 07:47 PM

what is the date?
and the route?
going thru Gonzaga??

capt. mike - 3-23-2010 at 08:15 PM

TW - where will you be at BOLA nite one??

TMW - 3-24-2010 at 07:16 AM

It's April 28 to May 2. First race day is Thursday April 29th. I'll be in BOLA but probably won't overnight as I'll be pitting and may need to be down course somewhere for the next day. I'm waiting for my leader to firm up his plans so I'll know where I'll be.

Go to www.norra.com for all the details etc.

TMW - 3-24-2010 at 07:20 AM

Day 1 stage 3 starts where the pavement ends and goes thru Gonzaga Bay by Cocos and out to hwy 1 running across part of Laguna Chapala then transit to BOLA.

capt. mike - 3-24-2010 at 07:35 AM

thx TW - we are scrambling to find a room for the BOLA overnite.

BajaGeoff - 3-25-2010 at 11:38 AM

I will be pitting with Mag7. Here are all the stages and pit locations....I am hoping for a day two pit at Ejido Cadeje just north of San Juanico. Bring on the south swells!

http://blog.bajabound.com/norra-mexican-1000-road-rally-stag...

CP - 3-25-2010 at 01:16 PM

Hey BajaGeoff,
Just wanted to confirm - the pit is in Cadaje and not San Juanico? I had read somewhere else that it was in SJ.

BajaGeoff - 3-25-2010 at 02:08 PM

Hey CP,

I heard it was in San Juanico initially, then moved a bit north to Cadeje...

I will try and confirm that though.

OFF ROAD EDSEL

Look at what our son got to drive...

Josh and the crew at Stewart's Race Works (Craig Stewart is one of Ivan's sons) are prepping classic off road racers for the upcomming NORRA Mexican 1000. Photo from yesterday.

cj5orion - 3-27-2010 at 06:41 AM

I'm down in Gonzaga now.Hope I'll still be here for the race ?
That would be fun to sit over at Rancho, cervesa in hand, watch 'em go by!

capt. mike - 3-27-2010 at 08:03 AM

cj5 -

tides will be high for the race - i can't do gonzaga's alfi strip.
can you get an update on R grande's pista? how many, size of rocas??
i hate to use it, it is soooo crappy.
but - no rooms at BOLA so far. i'd rather crash at ginzaga of we watched them go by there. it was a blast in 2003.
got any camping close to you? - actually we'd do the motel if they have anything.

Desertbull - 3-29-2010 at 03:51 PM

who needs a room...you never needed a room before...hell its gonna be a fiesta...no sleep needed...just do it man!

capt. mike - 3-29-2010 at 05:10 PM

i hate it when he does that....he's right but i am too old to keep up anymore.
and my partner will want at least a bed even if it is a cot at PSFO.

NORRA has me on standby to haul film crew members - if so i get one of their blocked rooms.
Where YOU gonna be DB?

Cap - 3-30-2010 at 10:10 AM

This is too cool! I just found all this and I have to say Im impressed. Great looking car! I think I almost have Nena talked into entering, I just have to check if her toyota is pre-89

Desertbull - 3-30-2010 at 10:26 AM

We'll be filming the event from contingency to La Paz in the dirt. Full reports on the DN baby.

We don't have rooms, cuz we don't plan to sleep, okay maybe a couple hours a night.

capt. mike - 3-30-2010 at 10:31 AM

Hi Cap - email always works. Nomads PM?? Who knows.
Nothing but tentative. Thinking about ARR BOLA 29th to watch that stage of the rally arrive. Gonzaga will be under water. Rancho Grande...well you know....rocks city...i consider it emergency use only TBHWY
No rooms anywhere. NORRA might want me to fly some camera/film guys but I only have 2 seats left. I didn't sign up when they canvassed for planes on BBP some months ago but one of my friends here was selected for one of the 4 planes they said they'd pay for - all expenses that is. Then NORRA called me last week and asked if I would still be interested.
Just an attempt at chasing the baja sun and a party....
;^)

So - if I go we'll do MMNG to enter and gas, then BOLA, hang out all night if rooms, if not allow an hour of light and skip to PSFO or MULEGE for the nite. Hit ?? for next 2 nites then go home Sunday, thru OLS. DVT.
My backer just retired, has a high value very tricked and modded RAM 210 he will not let into baja anymore and an Aztruck he just rebuilt ground up but only takes it when he needs lots of seats like for flying sams.

Mike, did you pilots get the ' Bahia de L.A, airport is officially open' notification you said was needed from the San Felipe AOE people?

capt. mike - 3-31-2010 at 07:42 AM

good Q DK - here's the fax:

officially the airport remains closed under DGAC NOTAM from Mexico City (their FAA equivalent)

but as Airmech here and others have confirmed, planes seem to go in and out regularly with no upset from federales staged there.

NORRA is aware of this and wants to do everything by the book - so they have sent a list of the planes going there 29th for the rally (including mine) to DGAC for the permission to land much as is being done by the Sams who go in monthly.

Even tho i may or may not get there either as part of NORRA or as an independent, Mike Pearleman had the courtesy to call and get my vitals to add to his letter to Mexico city.

capt. mike - 4-28-2010 at 03:50 PM

goes off manana. who's going to BOLA??

BajaRob - 4-28-2010 at 04:49 PM

We and about 50 neighbors will watch a transit drive by at Cow Patty's in Puertecitos.

David K - 4-28-2010 at 06:45 PM

Have fun Rob & Connie!!!

Wave at Parnelli Jones for me...

Last time I was close to him was when he drove up next to me at his Big Oly Bronco trailer the day before the 1973 Baja 1000 (I was 16):

Thanks David

BajaRob - 4-29-2010 at 07:45 AM

will Josh be pitting?

David K - 4-29-2010 at 08:58 AM

No... not this time, otherwise I would be down there with him!

BajaRob - 4-30-2010 at 07:54 AM

We didn't make it to CowPattys. We stopped at KM38 where about 30 of our neighbors parked at the Dipchit dip. The first car by was the yellow number 1 Blazer of Parnelli Jones. Mark McMillan stopped and gave us a dozen posters.
We BBQed carne asada and pollo asada which was tastier than hot dogs at CP's. Lots of vintage race cars and some newer ones.

David K - 4-30-2010 at 08:15 AM

Fantastic... PHOTOS PLEASE!

(I know I tried to show you how, but just email them to me and I will post)

Anyone else have photos? :bounce:

Sorry

BajaRob - 5-2-2010 at 06:42 AM

no photos. With a taco in one hand and a Tecate in the otro no hands left for camera. We did see the 58 Edsel that was prepped by Josh.

want to see some action and great music??
here it is.

http://www.vimeo.com/11384193

check out the dog co-driver.

capt. mike - 5-2-2010 at 07:09 AM

by the way...NORRA didn't do squat for having race updates etc daily on their site. lame if you ask me.
next time they need to hire Dirt-Newz.com to cover it by contract.
those guys know how to cover a race! like the recent Rip 2 the Tip w/ Desert Assassins MC tour. Classic pix, vids and live updates.

Sahuaro Films has it together too.

Mike, I believe there was a marketing reason for that omission.

NORRA (as you can see by the video) was trying to get back to the roots of Baja off road racing (1967-1972)... and there was no 'live' coverage of the races back then! Motos mixed in with trucks and buggies, and even a side car! Fun stuff...

Not exactly. This was what it was, a bit of nostalgia. Then too, this 'race' was completed in stages, certainly not a copy of the first races: point-to-point, first-man-wins, last-guy-loses types of races.

This particular event might be compared to various "historic car" races. It's just fun seeing some of the old machinery going through the paces—but not at race speed.

As I have heard from friends 'trackside' the competitors "toured by" and "slower than many of the residents who use the road regularly". By the same token I have a video (via e-mail) of a couple of entries getting into a dice of sorts.

Still, I'm sorry that I missed it.

David K - 5-2-2010 at 12:47 PM

Yes, sorry I wasn't more precise with my words... "trying to get back" was basically showing what it was like in the old days when NORRA ran things, but with a twist doing it in three daily stages, like a rally.

Thanks!

TMW - 5-3-2010 at 11:44 AM

I haven't seen the overall results yet but it seemed to take a toll on the older vehicles. There were about 100 racers started and on day two at our pit near El Datil south of San Ignacio we counted only 55 vehicles thru when we closed down at 8pm Friday evening and did not see anyone going back to San Ignacio. We were to pit 8 bikes and five of the 8 were out of the race before us. We pitted 3 bikes plus gave gas to the sidecar guys.

The Norman TT truck was thru first followed by Weatherboys TT (Scott) and Bob Gordons buggy. I think Gordon won OA. The Old OLY Bronco came back to San Ignacio after we did limping on a blown headgasket out of the race. We met them at Rice and Beans. They tried to fix it but it was still setting in the parking lot the next morning.
