I believe I got some ULSD in Mexico

Hook - 3-23-2010 at 06:17 PM

I am up in AZ right now, taking in some spring training games. On my way up, I did the usual fill-up with diesel at the Pemex that is very close to the K21 immigration checkpoint just south of Nogales, Sonora, Mexico.

Well, judging by how noisy my truck is running, I'd say that I suspect that there is ULSD along the border now.

The confirmation will come when I fill up again down near Guaymas and it begins to purr again.

Stay tuned, diesel owners.

Noisy Diesel?

Buddy, you forgot you were driving a FORD....no fuel is going to quiet the sound of that engine trying to destroy itself....by the way you owe me 4 Newie's....

Hook,

I'm not seeing a difference in my'06 F350 w/ a 6.0. as far as performance goes. Does the ULSD not affect this older motor? Not sure if the Diesel in San Felipe has the newer ULSD.

I swear when coming from San Felipe after fueling up then heading west to San Diego via I-8 it runs faster...

It I'm constantly amazed of the many things I learn visiting this board. Never owning a diesel, I had no idea what USLD was. But, NOW I do....

Chuck, my 7.3L engine definitely has run smoother and quieter on the diesel I have been buying well below the border for the last two years. Hard to tell if it's faster or not; I do use a programmer.

Shoot, I have to make a quick run to Colorado and my truck is already shuddering at the thought of having to run again on that Stupid American Diesel or better known as SAD and that is a better description than USLD

Martyman - 3-24-2010 at 12:53 PM

You got a USLD huh? I got an STD

At this point, I am declaring a FALSE ALARM on the ULSD in Mexico contention.

It appears that I had an inline, aftermarket fuel filter that was clogging. I had noticed for about a week that my rail mount fuel pump was much louder when I turned on the key and the pump brought the system up to pressure before I turned the engine over. That got me wondering about that filter that was pre-pump.

Then, on the way back today, the truck started dogging it at about 70 mph. We were about 3 miles north of Nogales, AZ. It ran just fine below 55 and at idle. So I pulled into a Napa Auto parts store and replaced the filter for 2.40 US. Engine immediately was quieter and running like a top.

That's my story, and I'm stickin' to it.

Whew, glad that ULSD thing is cleared up. But still wondering if Martyman's little problem is cleared up as well.

Tom, is your diesel a newer ULSD truck... and if it is, how long has it been happy with diesel bought in Baja Sur?

Remember David, REAL trucks don't have spark plugs. :P
