Guys trip to Asuncion

Bajaboy - 3-25-2010 at 09:55 AM

I had originally planned on heading down to Bahia Asuncion and Playa San Rafael with my 18 month old son, Gabriel, in early April but had to change plans due to a scheduling conflict. As such, our trip was cut short and we only made it to BA for 5 days.

The plan was to get up at 4:00 am and cross the border at 5:00. Well, my son tossed and turned all night finally waking me up at 3:00am. I figured we might as well get ready and let my wife sleep a bit more. We crossed at 4:00am on 3/18.

The drive down was easy with light traffic. The toll road sucks after Rosarito and I still wonder why Mexico can't figure out how to build a road that will last more than a few months:?:. Otherwise, the road to Vizcaino is in decent shape although there are some rough sections from all the rain. We arrived at our place in BA about 5:30 or so.

We quickly unpacked and met Grandma (who also lives in BA) for some hot dogs and walked around town. It was great to see old friends and unwind during our walk.

With only a few days for vacation, I decided to keep the projects to a minimum. I did install a drip irrigation system around the yard. I also had Roberto start the frame for our patio and I assembled and painted a dresser for Gabriel. For the most part, though, it was time to hang out with my son.

We left our place on Tuesday at 4:00 am and returned via Tecate. As we headed towards Vizcaino, we were treated to a beautiful lightening storm and sporadic rain through the desert. We crossed at Tecate with only one car ahead of us. Unfortunately, though, we were picked along with a number of other cars to be x-rayed. No worries...we arrived home at 6:00 with a smiling mom waiting to greet us.

Yesterday, our neighbor Luis (in many of the pics) emailed and asked if I would be his Padrino for his Communion in May. I said I would be honored and thus am planning for a return trip next month.

In all, another fantastic trip south of the border. Hope you enjoyed the brief report and pics.

How cool Zac, what a pleasure to see how your place and son are coming along. I can almost taste Lupita's great sea food!! What a treat.

It was great to see the boys again and see your casita evolving...your plants are spreading all over the village now too.

Good job with the drip system... let me know if you require any tech assistance/ advice... Grow some fruit trees around your home, if you want!

Zac,

I too had the luxury of taking time from work when my daughter was young (now 19 and in college UCSB) to visit our home in Baja. Glad you had a great trip and made it home safe.
