The Governments of Baja California Sur and Baja California launched the legal and normative processes to obtain the denomination of origin of Mexican abalone produced in both places.

The authorities of both states hope that these agreements help to avoid the piracy of this mollusc in the Asian market and the US, where it is in high demand and has a high commercial value.

Participating in the signing of the agreements was the head of the Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fishery and Foods (SAGARPA), Francisco Mayorga Castaneda; and governors Narcissus Agundez and Jose Guadalupe Osuna Millan.

Mayorga Castaneda emphasised that abalone produced by these two states of the Baja California peninsula is recognised around the world for its quality, which allows the product to fetch a higher price than product originating from other world regions.

The initiative arose when several seafood producers of a cooperative from the North Pacific zone asked Agundez to certify the abalone, to give the consumer greater certainty and avoid commercial piracy.

For Agundez, commercialisation is fundamental in guaranteeing greater income for fishers and their families, Tribuna de los Cabos reports.

Meanwhile, Osuna Millan stressed that the sum of the efforts between the governments of the peninsula guaranties better fisheries development, supported by better commercialization of products like the abalone.

In early March, a group of cooperative seafood producers from the North Pacific zone and South of Baja California Sur signed commercialisation agreements with the the company Tosenbo Co. Ltd, of Japan, to sell abalone and lobster from Caribbean waters in the Asian market.

Thanks to the intervention of the state government, cooperative members will sell their products as of this month in Hong Kong supermarkets and Japanese restaurants through the company presided over by Yuki Miyadera.
