Tradition in the Nations Capital

capitolkat - 4-2-2010 at 07:15 AM

it's traditional for a couple of friends and my wife to go down to the tidal basin on Good Friday and sit under the cherry blossoms and with a set of chairs , wine totes, cheese and guacamole, with our cigars and just watch the people who are gawking at the blossoms. :lol:Last year we became celebrities as folks walking by noticed our wine, cigars, seats and food and took pictures and said that was the way to do it. People come from all over the world to enjoy the cherry blossoms and today promises to be high 70's and clear sky- crowds are huge and we will Metro it . On Easter Sunday we have been going to sunrise service at the Lincoln Memorial- usually a great CW singing group singing gospel but his year we are going to Arlington cemetery for sunrise service.:saint:

This is our last year in DC as in October we head to La Paz to begin building our house and we'll have to develop new traditions.

Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus

Will do some small chores in the back yard this morning and think about Good Friday and what it means, if the story is really true, and what life must have been like in 33AD.
Bob H

Good Friday, also known as Holy Friday, Black Friday, Great Friday, is a holiday observed primarily by Christians commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death as believed by Christians at Calvary. The holiday is observed during Holy Week as part of the Paschal Triduum on the Friday preceding Easter Sunday, and often coincides with the Jewish observance of Passover.

Based on Christian scripture. (The Preparation Day was the day before the Sabbath - The Sabbath is Saturday) of the Sanhedrin Trial of Jesus, the Crucifixion of Jesus was most probably on a Friday. The estimated year of Good Friday is AD 33, by two different groups, and originally as AD 34 by Isaac Newton via the differences between the Biblical and Julian calendars and the crescent of the moon. A third method, using a completely different astronomical approach based on a lunar Crucifixion darkness and eclipse model (consistent with Apostle Peter's reference to a "moon of blood" in Acts 2:20) arrives at the same date, namely Friday April 3, AD 33.

I've always enjoyed Christian Good Friday Services....
all those little kids marching down the aisles waving their palm branches and singing.

And over the last many years
I've developed the habit of gathering my friends to again watch Jesus Christ Superstar:
Hosanna Heysanna Sanna Sanna Ho
Sanna Hey Sanna Ho Sanna
Hey J C, J C won't you fight for me?
Sanna Ho Sanna Hey Superstar

Bob H. That's a good bit of informaton. Thank's for the post. Happy Easter to all.

Good Friday

Dave - 4-2-2010 at 09:03 AM

Which tonight corresponds to the fourth day of Passover. We'll join hands at the Seder and sing, "What a Friend We Have in Jesus."

Later, my girlfriend will give me another present.

Skipjack Joe - 4-2-2010 at 09:11 AM

Good Friday is a big deal in my church and as an altar boy I used to skip school to attend midday services. But now I just work through the day.

Hook - 4-2-2010 at 11:05 AM

When I was working, all Fridays were Good Fridays.

BajaMick's birthday today

Mulegena - 4-2-2010 at 11:12 AM

Soooo, we've got a watermelon chillin' for when he gets back with his students from Playa Burro this afternoon. Then I'm taking him out to dinner at his fav Mulege taco stand out on the highway (his choice), a meander out in the west valley to bird watch, perhaps a glass of wine or a beer at Ray's Restaurant to watch the sunset. Then maybe a game of pool at Mesquite, the new hangout on Mulege Plaza. And, if BajaFam show up our plans will include them of course!

We Spent Good Friday

Gypsy Jan - 4-2-2010 at 03:09 PM

Worshiping in our own way, at the House of Dog.

We went to the vet to update vaccinations and do blood panels.

In Rosarito, the the main boulevard south was closed off because there were about two hundred people lined up in the street behind a very large cross, getting ready to march south on Mex Hwy 1 to where I am not sure, maybe Puerto Nuevo?

It was a very colorful and engaging scene - for us anyway because we were on the other side of the divider going north. The drivers that were stopped behind the procession were not happy. They expressed their displeasure/frustration by leaning on their horns. This kind of detracted from the solemnity of the occasion.

DENNIS - 4-2-2010 at 03:11 PM

I'm headin' down to Our Lady Of Sharkey's for a spiritual libation....or two.

Bajahowodd - 4-2-2010 at 03:12 PM

A bloody mary??

dtutko1 - 4-2-2010 at 04:44 PM

As a working stiff, I always thought that all fridays were good, if it was also a payday it was very good, and if you got the day off it was great.
I could never figure out how the most important day in christianity was the first sunday after the first full moon after the spring equinox??? Sounds like the christians had to counter the pagens again.

Pompano - 4-6-2012 at 01:00 PM

Another Good Friday in Baja.

..Same question...different year.

Perhaps some different input?

The following are some facts I personally did not know, but am glad I researched.

Many people in different countries celebrate the anniversary of Jesus Christ’s crucifixion and death on the Friday before Easter Sunday. This is an observance that involves people fasting and praying.

Many church services are held in the afternoon, usually around noon or midday to 3pm, to remember the hours when Jesus hung on the cross.

Many churches also observe the day by re-enacting the procession of the cross as in the ritual of the Stations of the Cross, which depicts the final hours of Jesus’ life. Processions are held in many countries such as India, Italy, Mata, the Philippines, and Spain.

Kites that are often handmade are flown in Bermuda on Good Friday to symbolize the cross that Jesus died on, as well as his ascension into heaven. This custom dates back to the 19th century.

Churches in countries, such as Belgium and Mexico, are draped in black on Good Friday in memory of Jesus’ suffering on the cross.

The day is solemn and a general air of sadness is felt in many towns and villages. Many Christians in Poland fast on dry bread and roasted potatoes.

Egg decorating is also part of the Easter preparations in Poland and many other countries.

Happy Good Friday, Happy Easter Holiday!

I'm spending this weekend to work on my Adventurewagen, to ready it for the next upcoming Baja trip.

Today, I did install this nifty Top Shelf, a supported net for the softer things in life.

I have looked over the comments and replies and realize a trip to Ana's or the Jungle will greatly help to decode those messages.

So you just gave Sharkey's up for Lent? I heard a nasty rumor you had knocked up the c-cktail waitress and had to wait to go back until she left town in shame. :)

Rosarito is busy. Great to see. Lot's of local Mexican families in Rosarito centro Norte flying tarps, playing with their kids and grilling food. 70 degrees with a 5mph on-shore breeze- so it's not warm and most every one is wrapped in something to say warm. We have a couple of nice big families camped out in front for the weekend. Elotes carts, churros carts, candy carts, cotton candy, horse rentals- all right here. This is why we protect the beach and this is who we do it for. The real people. Happy Easter all.

That was a couple of years back, Wooosh. Still on the Banned list.

DavidE - 4-6-2012 at 08:57 PM

Counted (91) cars, and (54) trucks westbound between Guerrero Negro and Vizcaino @ 11:30 - 12:30 Looked like I-5. Lots and lots of freshly discarded Tecate botes. Can't say how many were eastbound, but several perhaps 8+ passed me and I was doing 70.

Found a BanComer ATM next to the gasolinera on the left side going into town. Machine display had a cardboard sign taped across it with "FUERA de SERVICIO". Mexican lady passerby laughed and said the locals do that on holidays to keep the machine from being cleaned out. It functioned perfectly.

Very little is open on Viernes Santo. G.N. and Vizcaino looked like ghost towns. Malarrimo restaurant had only Mexican guests. La Ballena marcado looked like army ants had marched through an hour before.

I try and remember regardless of fact or fiction about other things a poor soul, by all accounts one superb human being was hung from a cross this date for trying to express his beliefs. Even the Hindus acknowledge his wanderings and charisma. His life and his teachings seems to be vastly different from what organized religion pontificates today. For as long as I can remember if I could travel back in time he is the one person whom I would wish to meet. Funny -- I am not "religious"; I guess I respect my image of him more than I do of most other "leaders" I have read about.

DavidE, i'm with you, but....

Dear god, hope you get the letter and...
I pray you can make it better down here
I don't mean a big reduction in the price of beer
But all the people that you made in your image
See them starving in the street
'Cause they don't get enough to eat from god
I can't believe in you

Dear god, sorry to disturb you but...
I feel that I should be heard loud and clear
We all need a big reduction in amount of tears
And all the people that you made in your image
See them fighting in the street
'Cause they can't make opinions meet about god
I can't believe in you

Did you make disease and the diamond blue?
Did you make mankind after we made you?
And the devil too!

Dear god don't know if you noticed but...
Your name is on a lot of quotes in this book
And us crazy humans wrote it, you should take a look
And all the people that you made in your image
still believing that junk is true
Well I know it ain't, and so do you
Dear god
I can't believe in
I don't believe

I won't believe in heaven or hell
No saints, no sinners, no devil as well
No pearly gates, no thorny crown
You're always letting us humans down
The wars you bring, the babes you drown
Those lost at sea and never found
And it's the same the whole world 'round
The hurt I see helps to compound
That father, son and holy ghost
Is just somebody's unholy hoax
And if you're up there you'll perceive
That my heart's here upon my sleeve
If there's one thing I don't believe in

It's you
Dear god :saint:

Good Friday? I just got back from a Richard Dawkins conference about our secular society....;)

DavidE - 4-7-2012 at 08:20 AM

God, made us in his image. I also believe that he decided "If they're not smart enough to figure things out for themselves, then screw 'em, I'll start over yet again. Sooner or later I'll get it right".

bufeo - 4-7-2012 at 10:52 AM

Well, I was born a WASP in the heart of the Bible Belt. Sometime around my 12th birthday, give or take a couple of years, I began to change the upper case P to lower case p, and finally dropped the letter entirely. I couldn't do anything about the WAS part.

After I retired, though, I joined the Church of the Latter Day Fly-tiers, so I'll probably spend a bit of time over this weekend tying a few midge patterns in anticipation of attracting some hungry trout later this spring.

During the fall as part of my decision to take the ecumenical approach to an individual's religious preference, I enjoy the congregations of upland game birds and flocks of water fowl and join the Disciples of the Side-by-side Bangers. So, after I have a few flies tied, I might re-load a few 20-bore shells and get a head start for fall.

In any case, we avoid the highways and byways on this weekend and any forum threads that involve religion, politics, or tire preferences.

This is THE BIG WEEKEND for Mexicans to go camping here in La Paz. It can often be hard to find stuff related to that type of an activity during these days since they've all been bought by locals going to the beach.

La Paz will seem almost deserted this weekend since so many people are outside of the city. It's a good time for thieves--we had the "honor" of helping catch one last night as a couple of people were stealing the wiring of the building behind our place at about 2 a.m.
