The forever fruit

bajajudy - 4-2-2010 at 10:14 AM

Next time you look at the price of a pineapple, remember that if you twist the top out of it and put it in the ground you will have yet another pineapple.

bajajudy - 4-2-2010 at 10:21 AM

If y'all are interested, I will continue this thread with the growth of my pina.
We must have over 40 growing in our yard. Last year Mega had a sale on them per pineapple not by the kilo, so everyone took the top off and left them in a box by the fruit. I took them all.
They are beautiful plants, make a nice border, are really easy to grow and produce a wonderful sweet fruit. The ones we have harvested have been small but unbelievably sweet.

castaway$ - 4-2-2010 at 10:36 AM

You can do the same with garlic, just take one clove and plant it and you will get an entire bulb.

Iflyfish - 4-2-2010 at 10:38 AM

How cool is that!! I have never seen these grow and am looking forward to this adventure. Thanks,

Iflyfish

Natalie Ann - 4-2-2010 at 10:40 AM

Judy - I knew that theoretically one could do that, but yours is the first plant I've seen from such a start. I'd be real pleased if you continue this thread, show us how those pineapples turn out.

castaway$ - If you plant those garlic cloves around your rose bushes they'll help keep away bugs.

vandenberg - 4-2-2010 at 10:54 AM

I have several growing in the dirt, but also some in pots. Pretty plant, but takes years to fruit. Have some from the regular Pina tops and some from the smaller sweeter variety. Some difference in appearance, but I forgot which was which.:P:biggrin: Don't hold your breath waiting for fruit. Buy them, they're cheap enough.

longlegsinlapaz - 4-2-2010 at 10:59 AM

Yes please....keep the progress pics coming! And maybe some time-lines for how long from planting to harvest?? Have you contacted Dole yet?:tumble:

Wiles
I was going to say about two years until the fruit come.
Glad you cleared up a question that I had...can this really continue forever? \
The plant dies after producing the fruit.
And I love the little purple flowers!
Looks like we have the complete story
Go for it!

Nan&D - 4-2-2010 at 12:17 PM

Love to see how your pineapples develop Judy!
We're just starting to garden in Asuncion, and will certainly add pineapples, even if just for the beautiful colour.

Iflyfish - 4-3-2010 at 08:25 AM

Do you just bury the cut off top in soil?

Iflyfish

bajajudy - 4-3-2010 at 08:27 AM

I twist the top off and stick that in the ground. Keep it well watered y voila

oladulce - 4-3-2010 at 10:10 AM

Thanks for the motivation and pics Judy and Wiles. I'll try it too after we get a conejo barrier up. Those stinkers get in to everything without wire around it.

I have three growing in the ground now, one of them is a double plant.

I twist the top off of a pineapple... then I let it dry out for two or three days. Turn it upside down and pull the bottom short brances off to expose small developing roots.

Place the plant in a pot, leaning sideways (so as to not have it rot out from overwatering)... once the roots take place I straighten it up and off it goes. After fully rooted in a pot I transfer to the ground in a sunny area.

No fruit blooms yet and I've had them going for about four or five years.

Thanks for the clarification, what fun!

Iflyfish

DianaT - 4-4-2010 at 02:46 PM

This is great---really need to try this. Even if there is no fruit for a long time, they are really pretty.

Judy, when you put them in the ground, how often do you water them at first??

irenemm - 4-4-2010 at 03:04 PM

Get one of those maui gold or try the one from mexico sugar something just as sweet as the maui gold. 18 months to 2 years. sometimes you can get babies off to the side they will never get big. if you ever get to a planation they show you how to grow them at the dole plantation they put in water first for the roots to start. then into some lava soil.
worth the wait.

Bob H - 4-4-2010 at 04:53 PM

Here are my pineapple plants... Can't wait for one of them to fruit! They were in a pot for a couple of years and now in my front yard for almost 2 years.

Three of them under a small plumeria tree.

This is my DOUBLE pineapple plant.

Better tasting pineapple (found in places like Thailand) has barbs on the leaves (plant self-defence)!

Dole Corp., wanting to reduce injuries to its workers went with the more 'bland' variety of pineapple that had smooth leaves... Yes, it is good... but quite sour compared to the 'sugar pineapple' varieties of the tropics!

Pineapple is native to Central & South America.

bajajudy - 4-17-2010 at 11:08 AM

Mine have barbs

BMG - 4-17-2010 at 12:07 PM

My mother-in-law in Cd Obregon grew this one from the top of a pineapple. Unfortunately it was stolen from their courtyard before they had a chance to pick and eat it.

Hi Judy, I have 4 plants, 3 in the ground, for a year now. They are growing good but the all have brown stripes in their leaves. Is that too much/not enought water ? Or just the time of year ?

Thanks for the Banditos book I got at Rancho Buena Vista.

I have a few growing in Pescadero, they are very hardy plants. Very cool when they start flowering/fruit. I have not had any problems with the conejos, they don't seem to bother like other plants.

bajajudy - 4-21-2010 at 02:21 PM

Bear
If you look at the pix of april 17 you can see that the leaves have a red center. I looked at all of mine and that seems to indicate that they are getting ready to bloom. Are yours red or brown in the middle. Brown would probably indicate not enough water...probably

Bob H - 5-27-2010 at 07:59 PM

The bloom just sprouted, I would say last week... the plant is about four or five years old.

Now, I don't know what to do... fertilize it more? Do I have to worry about pests?

That is a great looking pineapple. Some of the best pineapples we've ever had have been small.

When we were anchored in Black Manele Harbor on Lanai many years ago, we were told that pineapple plants have 3 good crops. The 3rd year was the best fruit so keep your plant going.

Which leaves us with one dilemma,:?::P Since they are grown from the tops of store bought pineapples, who's to know what crop number we're at.
Ending sentence with a preposition, shame on me.:biggrin:

BTW my plants are in their 4th year and no sign of any fruit anywhere.

Glad you asked. The same Lanai resident had picked pineapple for much of his life when Dole was still canning Hawaiian pineapples. He said the 1st picking was for canning, the 2nd for fresh retail and canning and the 3rd for restaurants and the ones the locals ate. I don't think it makes any difference which picking the top is from, it depends on the crop that top will later produce. Judy's next 2 should get progressively better. (Assuming that pineapple picker knew his pineapple from a passion fruit.)

vandenberg - 8-2-2010 at 03:03 PM

Now I'm thoroughly confused. Don't pineapple plants, like bananas, only produce one fruit crop before they croak ?
Are you telling me that the same plant produces fruit year after year ?
Enlighten me !!!

The story was that a plant produces 3 pineapples, 1 at a time. Don't know if it would produce more or not. The pineapple picker said that most plantations replaced the bulk of the plants after 2 pineapples.

This was 20 years ago so take it for what's it's worth, but you know my mind works like a trap steel.

My only personal pineapple picking experience was 40 years ago and may have involved alcohol.

Marc - 8-2-2010 at 10:01 PM

Just plant the lower part??

Ready to produce again

bajajudy - 8-5-2010 at 09:32 AM

This is the top from the fruit that we just harvested. The plant itself doesnt look like it will survive. The others have died after producing one fruit.

Marc...twist the top off and put it in the ground. Keep it well watered

pinatop.jpg - 36kB

Did BP spray dispersant on my pineapple?

Wiles - 8-13-2010 at 04:43 PM

Things turned out a bit different this time around with the new crop. This one is only half the size of the last one and a side shoot grew out of the base of the plant.

So we ate the fruit and let me tell you it was sooooo sweet and delicious. Just not enough of it.

Now we'll plant the top (3rd generation) as well as the shoot and say goodbye to the original plant.

And of course.....yawn......wait...and wait....another 2 years.

we actually have a triple plant in the ground for about 1 year now. our big one gave a softball size fruit last year and we are hoping for more from it. it didn't die after fruiting.

MsTerieus - 8-13-2010 at 05:50 PM

That reminds me ... I have my first pineapple top soaking in water, in the window. (After 2+ days, I don't see any of the "threads" referred to above.) I had better go plant it already!
:D

woody with a view - 8-14-2010 at 06:11 AM

peel off the small leaves form the bottom until you have a 1/2-3/4" stump. you should see some little nubs poking out at that time. plant it.

I dont soak mine. I just twist the top off and put it in either the ground or a pot with soil. Water well.

Why not just go to safeway for the pineapples and/or mangos?

Or is it the challenge?

Well, I see something that sort of LOOKS like threads, but they are sort of all stuck together. I guess that's what you mean, though. :)

Thanks Woodie! :tumble:

I had better hurry up -- the poor pina top has been sitting in water for many days, now, and the leaves are starting to go brown ..... :(

When BajaJudy started this post back in April, I ran outside to look into my pineapple plants and sure-enough there were the blooms just starting up. We harvested today. The small one is some sort of sweet little Hawai'in, the big one is over 6lbs from Mexican stock. We have 18 more plants growing, at least three varieties, and will have our own little pineapple festival in another two years!
