Big here in Ensenada!!!!! FREAKED ME OUT!

DianaT - 4-4-2010 at 03:48 PM

Was a long one---not a hard shaker here in IB, but just kept moving. Thought it would never stop! Waiting for the aftershocks.

Didn't time it, but have been in many an earthquake and this one was a VERY long lasting one. If it was only 30 seconds, they were a very long 30 seconds. Or at least it felt that way.

Our house in Campo La Jolla was really moving, for a long time. It was the most shaking I have ever felt.

desertcpl - 4-4-2010 at 03:51 PM

we have just lost our cell phones,, verizson

jodiego - 4-4-2010 at 03:51 PM

6.9 near the Colorado River in northern Baja. It was a loooong one here in San Diego.

skipowell - 4-4-2010 at 03:52 PM

pool water was sloshing out here in San Diego
my sister in LA said it was also very strong up there!

San Felipe would be fairly close to the epic center
any news from there?

6.9 earthquake in n baja

jeremias - 4-4-2010 at 03:52 PM

we just felt the earthquake here in orange county, and i just found out it was 6.9 down in baja epicenter Guadalupe valley i believe. Wow, i hope it's not too bad, but that is pretty big to have shaked all the way here lilke that.

Udo - 4-4-2010 at 03:52 PM

My parrot even fell off his perch...that's a first!

Here in Running springs.

Lasted about 9-10 seconds

astrobaja - 4-4-2010 at 03:55 PM

we felt it pretty hard even here in the sierra and we sit on a solid 8 km deep area of granite!! Our cats did'nt care though!

Bajahowodd - 4-4-2010 at 03:55 PM

I'm near Disneyland. I was very close to the epicenter of the Sylmar and then later, the Northridge quake. While it merely rolled rather gently here, the duration was just about as long as I remember from those other quakes. That magnitude, preliminary as it may be, puts it very close to the Northridge quake.

Natalie Ann - 4-4-2010 at 03:55 PM

Just heard from a friend in Ensenada. He said that at his place the earthquake was what we've come to call a 'roller'.... not a big bang/boom and jump of the earth, but like being on a very small roller coaster... seemed to last a long time. We quit talking when a sizable aftershock hit.

(Edit: Friend said he ran outside to the street where he watched his house move around on its foundation)

Pool water wash still sloshing out of the pool here in Huntington beach quite a while (3 minutes or more) after we had figured out there was an earthquake and not just our ears... and gone out front of the house. So 4 to 5 minutes of big rolling.:?:

Bob H - 4-4-2010 at 03:57 PM

Wow.... biggest one I've ever experienced, and the longest by far. Was my wife's first one... she was holding on to the refrigerator, and my dog slept right through it. Seemed to start mild and then increased shaking took place, then slowly tapered off after 30+ seconds.

Hope those in the Mexicali/San Felipe area are OK!

Upset our dogs---they don't like earthquakes. In Asuncion, one of our dogs usually knows it is coming, but they are really loud quakes, so we think he hears it before we do.

No advance warning from the dog for this one---no noise.

I wonder about my friends in Calexico.

Phil S - 4-4-2010 at 04:00 PM

Sitting here in West Valley Phoenix area. suddenly blinds started moving left to right. Then felt it through my chair. Wife was outside and came in and said, "what the heck was that". Said the water pond on our 'water feature' started "rolling". Called our friends in Yuma, said was very noticeable there. He was afraid his new flat screen on the wall would come down. They were out doors at the time. Hope San Felipe came out o.k.

CNN Coverage

MrBillM - 4-4-2010 at 04:06 PM

Tuned in to find them talking to someone at LAX.

Figuring that wasn't local enough, I guess, they went to someone in BAKERSFIELD. She said it wasn't that big a Quake.

The News Boob on CNN just said "I've heard it was felt as FAR AWAY as ARIZONA.

WOW.

No scheisse, senor.

Ten minutes after the quake, the water was still sloshing around. The wife was outside and she thought the 500-gallon tank (3/4 full) was going to come down. Surprisingly, no detectable cracks or leaks thus far.

It was a LONG Quake.

Now, CNN is back to their "Tower" cam at LAX.

Rocking and Rolling

Gypsy Jan - 4-4-2010 at 04:10 PM

Here on the oceanfront.

Yikes Squared! There was aserious bout thirty seconds of swaying, but nothing fell down and the dogs didn't even get excited.

Thank goodness the epicenter is inland, so no tsunami tsu come.

This morning I watched a news segment interview with a seismologist who had just returned from Chile. He reported that concrete block buildings with sufficient re-bar inside the block survived the quake with little-to-no damage regardless of age.

Guess what our house is made of and why am I less freaked out now.

Really felt it strong here in San Diego on the north side of Mission Valley. Was upstairs and it was really rocking and rolling. Went into our back yard, and lots of water had sloshed out of the shallow end of the pool. The waves were still rolling in the pool long after the shaking had stopped. Wild!

I've been feeling many aftershocks, too. We live on the north side overlooking Mission Valley. Water was sloshing out of our pool and the waves continued long after the shaking stopped....

The earthquake

DianaT - 4-4-2010 at 04:33 PM

Looking at the earthquake center site, it is interesting. It appears there was an earlier quake in Baja, then the big one, and then another one in Baja---all centered in a little different area.

So from which ones are the aftershocks coming? I would assume they are from the big one.

Hope it is just a release of some pressure from the big fault.

RP penasco affected.

calls coming out suggesting beer needed badly.

Bajahowodd - 4-4-2010 at 04:42 PM

Let's be serious here. Just consider that if you are perusing the Nomad posts, there are folks from all around the affected area who are on line, with electricity, sitting more or less calmly in their undamaged homes. I wouldn't give a second thought to being able to travel down through there. As time goes by, I'm sure there will be some stories dealing with damage. But, unless there are further seismic events, don't give it a second thought.

Vince - 4-4-2010 at 04:43 PM

Rocking and rolling here in Coronado/San Diego. Water sloshing out of pools but no knowledge of any serious damage. Anyone near Mexicali?

urgent calls coming from RP penasco - send tequila - many bottles broken, stop.

Felt three different earthquakes/aftershocks so far. Got a 1930's home in the East County and boy did it shake.

desertcpl - 4-4-2010 at 04:47 PM

I have some minor damage to the outside walls of my home, small cracks, and one outside door the molding seperated by about quarter of an inch.

I am very concerned about Mexicali and surrounding areas,, the new CNN is not talking about that

Bajajim1313 - 4-4-2010 at 04:49 PM

it looks far enough away so it should be okay but I'll be double checking with Discover Baja and this site for further info later in the week

BajaGuera - 4-4-2010 at 04:57 PM

According to the government earthquake sight there have been five earthquakes within a little over an hour - near Julian and near Pine Valley two more small ones.

bajalou - 4-4-2010 at 04:57 PM

And it keeps rockin'and rollin' here in San Felipe - no damage at my place but downtown? And I wonder about Guadalupe Victoria - nice town hope not too torn up but it's near the epicenter - 16 miles NNE of the ain event.

Early reports in the Mexicali newspapers say there are buildings with visible signs of structural damage, roads with fissures and broken pipes.

bajabeachbabe - 4-4-2010 at 05:26 PM

Kinda Spooky.

I just checked Jim Berkland's website (he predicts earthquakes based on moon and tidal activity) to see what his predictions were for this month and he predicted a 7+ between March 29 and April 5 somewhere on the Ring of Fire. Bingo.

Here are his predictions for April:

PREDICTIONS FOR APRIL

The Seismic Window of March 29-April 5, 2010 is based upon the full Moon syzygy of March 29., the close perigee on March 27, and the lingering effect of the equinoctal tides.
There is an 80% chance for a least one quake with the following parameters:
(1) 3.5-6.5M within 140 miles of Mt. Diablo (37.9N; 121.9W);
(2) 3.5-6.5M within 140 miles of Los Angeles ( 34.0N; 118..0W)
(3) 3.5-6.5M with an epicentral address of Washington or Oregon.
(4) 7.0+M major event globally. Most likely within the Pacific Ring of Fire.

Here is the link to his website bog:

Gotta be some real damage in Mexicali to San Felipe area. Too many poorly reinforced buildings.

I would say fortunately this quake was deep (32km per early reports) so full blown surface rupture is unlikely, as is the vertical motion experienced near epicenter in Northridge quake. But it doesn't take much shaking for cheezy concrete block w/insufficient rebar to crack & start falling apart. Let's hope for no outright collapse problems, but close to the epicenter that is unfortunately quite likely.

Baja Angel and I were at the San Pasqual/ San Diego Wild Animal Park in line waiting for the tram tour ride... When we were on the tram, the driver mentioned how the animals might be re-acting to the earthquake... We never felt it, nor did anyone else in line comment... we are bummed!

Our kids texed us that they all felt it, it was long... my son Chris was in a game store downtown and called me to say stuff was falling from shelves and it lasted about 45 seconds.

The radio (Kogo) driving home reported from people who just crossed the border at Calexico saw light poles moving and there was a report to damage on Hwy. 5 to San Felipe... and local TV news at 6:30 showed broken glass at the San Diego Sports Arena... etc.

We hope all of you are safe and secure, in Baja or where-ever!

It's a funny thing, living in a Mexican neighborhood....you can be there for a hundred years and never get to know your next door neighbor. They take privacy seriously.

ElFaro - 4-4-2010 at 08:39 PM

I'm out here about 8 mi. north of Tecate in San Diego back country and we could hear the quake coming through the ground and rocks as it moved through. Sounded like a freight train rumbling past. My wife went through the San Fernando quake in 1971 near the epicenter in Newhall (now Valencia) north of Los Angeles. Couldn't stay standing up for 20-30 seconds. Both about 7.2 mag.

ElFaro - 4-4-2010 at 08:43 PM

Also heard El Centro was w/o power today. They are supplied by Imperial Irr. District (IID). Possibly the 500kV line may have tripped along with generation in El Centro and Mexicali. Can take some time to restart generation after inspections are made of turbine-generators for any rotor damage.

DianaT - 4-4-2010 at 08:54 PM

The Imperial Valley Press on line is reporting that most of the power has been restored in El Centro.

It is also reporting that Westbound Interstate 8 was damaged and a portion is closed with traffic being detoured.

Imperial Valley Press Update

Still waiting to hear from some Calexico friends. After seeing that picture of the house in Mexicali, we are concerned.

Felt it pretty good in Palm Desert. There was about 10-15 seconds of shaking followed by a minute or more of rolling. It felt like being in a boat on a gentle sea. Didn't feel any of the aftershocks, though.

Our new fish tank was sloshing and the pendant lights were swaying here at our two story house on piers in west San Diego for what seemed like quite a long while. Hope folks south of border come out ok.

I experienced the 1971 Sylmar quake while living in a basement in Alhambra and the 1987 Whittier quake in my warehouse in Whittier and one of the big aftershocks of the Landers quake while playing golf at the TPC course in La Quinta and the 1994 Northridge quake in a second story lath and plaster duplex in Huntington Beach and this one was right up there for aprehension and excitement. My mother instilled in me a great fascination for all things geologic when I was a youngster. I still get a thrill when one of these hits but you are always wondering if this is the one where the walls and ceiling come down on your own head.
