La Cava in Ruta Vinacola

Located in the middle of the wine area, this is a new, clean but basic motel. $40/night for a room that had a good firm bed, huge shower with instant hot water. No TV or phones. The center, common area is nicely done and they have wine tasting and 'music' on the weekends in the central, round building.

They take reservations via e-mail but take a copy as the desk clerk did not have a record of our reservation. After our great dinner at Laja, we retired to sleep it off and the music started in the center round building, just loud enough to know it was there but not too bad. We requested a room away from the road as the hotel is quite close, but that put us close to the music. The music, by the way, was a guy on an electric keyboard covering show tunes, ending each rendition with flourishes; you know, run the thumb up the keyboard and then pound the final chord. The show ended promptly at 3:00am. I suggest you inquire as to the evening's music and if that guy is there, take the room close to the road - at least there's no grade there for the jake brakes. Just the warm rumble of a diesel that's drifting down a slight incline.

Musica till 3am? Can't imagine that would produce many repeat customers. We would stay there if not for that.
