Just talked to friends in Mexicali who said it was amazing how everyone is helping each other come through this. People who frequented neighborhood
stores are helping the owners clean up and re-build as well as others having strangers welcome into their homes until they can fix their own homes and
return. This is the way it should be as we should help our neighbors when tragedy strikes. I don't see residents demanding the government for help.
They get in there and do it themselves. I guess it's the Mexican way

Oh my! Sundog... that was amazing. Lots more damage than I ever imagined. There is a lot of cleanup going on also. Thanks for posting this.

We are currently in Baja but have not seen anything of an effort by US, government or citizens) to assist, especially compared to the Haiti efforts.
I realize this quake and its impact are nowhere as wide ranging of extreme.
Have their been organizations attempting to do this that I have missed?

One thing that everyone should consider is that although this earthquake was actually stronger than the Haitian quake, last I read, there were two
deaths attributed to the quake, versus the tens upon tens of thousand in Haiti. And while I don't wish to appear to be minimizing the damage here, all
to often, the media, in particular, seems to focus on the wrong things. Stuff falling off shelves in stores, broken plate glass windows, and even
cracks in roads, are really cosmetic. Maybe they are dramatic enough to satisfy the curious masses. That said, I feel deeply for anyone who suffered
real structural damage to their homes.

There are efforts in San Diego by a couple churches in the county to collect supplies and money to help Baja residents. It was on a couple news
stations last night and I believe they are heading to Mexicali this weekend. Sorry, don't remember the church, but I know one story was on the KUSI
website.
My brother and I are heading down to Gonzaga next week, but packing a bunch of blankets, water, etc. to give to anyone we see who might need a little
help.

Why is it that we got much broader news coverage (especiall right after the disaster) in Haiti and Chile, than we got of of our back yard?

There were some interesting photos overlooking the epicenter and surrounding area on TV news last night. There was a large hole, and everything was
wet. The conjecture is that a hole opened up in the earth, and a gaseous, sulphurous water eruption - similar to geysers Yellowstone - occurred.
My personal comment: do you think the geysers would be recurring now that the conduit through the earth has been created?
