After how many days of wind and rain, persistent overcast and cold, cold weather and EARTHQUAKES -- today was calm, warm and sunny; the humidity
dropped down, the ocean waves got small and glassy.
At sunset, there were no clouds on the horizon and then --- a Green Flash!
BajaBruno - 4-8-2010 at 08:22 AM
You know, I want to believe that all of you green flash people are not hallucinating, but despite many evenings watching, I have never seen the flash.
Maybe they are hard to see through the bottom of a c-cktail glass—I don’t know. It’s probably the fault of the ice.
Congrats, Jan.

No missile launches from Vandenberg or Point Magu

Cool Jan they are a rare event, you got lucky!

Actually, growing on the beach in SoCal and spending inordinate amounts of sunset time there I found the green flashes to be rather common--just a
clear sky was all that was needed.
Green Flash Fa'Realz!

Yes, it is a rare event because the offshore flow reverses at sunset and usually there is a cloud layer lurking, waiting for the opportunity to move
in.
It is also probably a rare event because most people aren't goofy enough to look out the window at sunset and say to themselves, "Hey, the sky and
horizon look pretty clear, and the wind is down and the air is dry; maybe there will be a green flash. so I guess I will go outside and stand around
and stare off into the distance for however long it takes to see if it happens."

Exactly!
BornFisher - 4-8-2010 at 04:00 PM
Yeah I think they are common too. Never in the summer, but often on low humidity days. BTW there can be one as the sun rises. Oh another hint-- use
binos and you can watch it form from the sides. Now if anyone wants to hear about the time I saw 3 in one sunset........... well that`s another
story!!!
astrobaja - 4-8-2010 at 06:32 PM
Heres a good page explaining them and what conditions are needed.

Bornfisher-- I'd advise against using binocs! You can cause serious damage quite quickly.

I guess I'm kind of loony too. A few years ago while in Hawaii I made sure I was on the beach almost everynight for weeks until I finally say it.

A few years ago two friends and I were on the beach at Torrey Pines around sunset and after some discussion had agreed that the green flash was
probably not real, at that moment we paused to watch the sunset and of course we all saw the bright green glow as the sun vanished into the ocean.

It helps when you wear your best tinfoil hat to your seance with the sun.

I've tried the Green Flash cafe in Oceanside..or is it Carlsbad....for many sunset dinners. I remain optimistic that eventually I will see a real
Green Flash. Perhaps more vino would help?
Cypress - 4-9-2010 at 06:18 AM
Have never seen the Green Flash. May be due to the fact that I'm grey-green colorblind?
Sharksbaja - 4-9-2010 at 12:54 PM
Been living and working facing sunsets all my life.. sorry no green flash, but I did see UFOs between LA and Catalina Is, TWICE!

Tinfoil Hat Couture
Gypsy Jan - 4-9-2010 at 01:48 PM
After seeing what Andre Leon Talley of Vogue is promoting as the "must-have" fashion accessory for Spring (a bee-keeper scarf head wrap (I s--- you
not!), I am pretty darn sure that I could come up with tasteful, fashionable tinfoil hats that would have all the NaYawkers fighting and waving
serious cash in order to be the first to buy my fabulous creations.
