NO local lobsters!

Udo - 4-11-2010 at 10:29 AM

Yesterday my wife and I went to Puerto Nuevo to feast on their legenday lobsters...

HOWEVER

There were no local lobsters available. They were all Chilean imports. Plus the available lobsters were all puny. In the US the lobsters they served would have gotten the fishemen a hefty fine for being undesized.
At least the oysters served were still obtained locally.

Lobster is a rather thorny issue, inasmuch as there are all kinds of critters sold as lobster. How 'bout jumbo crawfish? Purists claim that nothing surpasses real Maine lobster, and that Pacific versions of lobster just don't measure up. At the end of the day, considering that way too many presentations of lobster involve gallons of butter and pounds of garlic, one has to wonder just how lobster tastes. And then, there's that bugaboo involving exoskeletal creatures wherein whomever consumes lobster is also consuming everything they recent ate!

Buon appetit!

You left out the deep fried part...

"Commercial Spiny lobster season opens the first Wednesday in October and extends to the first Wednesday after the 15th of March. The most plentiful catch occurs in the first 45 days of the season so prices are low and quality is at its peak"

So Thanksgiving lobster would be ideal.

I guess Porto Nuevo is not using all the illegal lobster any more. they got caught a few times with barrels of lobster in the freezers and got big fines. you can buy it and have the co-op hold it for you in ensenada and pick up what you need during the closed season. that is better than having it taken from you and losing all the money and being closed a few weeks.
all the lobster from here is shipped to elsewhere. can still get lobster in san quintin.

So what is a guy to do when approached by a fisherman with fresh lobster for sale out of season? I now realize the lobsters I purchased 10 days ago were out of season by a week. Damn they were good...

I remeber a few years back going to Puerto Nuevo and having the waiter apologise profusly that he did not have the normal batch of local lobsters to serve me and instead had to serve up a very large austrailian lobster tail. It was real good. I guess that every thing is coming from Chile now.
Fruit, seabass, and now lobster.
