Our house after the Quake unliveable, we will rebuild we LOVE Baja and the People, also the tent city of the Couapua (?) Indians on the Rio Hardy. They also have a relief tent set up for supply's if you can.

The tribe is known as Cucupa in Mexico and Cocopa in the US but in their language they pronounce it Kwapa.

Earthquakes happen in other places and the world pees all over itself trying to help.
It happens in Mexico ten miles from the border and we hear nothing.
US / Mex relations are really strained, I know, but where is the rest of the world when help is needed? Does Mexico deny that need? That's what they do at the border after hurricanes have torn hell out of the place.

There's more than one factor at work here. I think you have alluded to the Mexican pride issue, whereby it would appear to be a sign of weakness to ask for help. That said, I'm guessing that many countries around the world made at least some level of inquiry. However, there are also facts and pereceptions at work. For instance, although the Haiti earthquake was not as powerful as the Mexicali quake, estimates run from a low of 92,000 deaths to a high of 230,000 in Haiti. How's that for ballparking? Anyway, last I heard, there were only two reported deaths arising from the Mexicali quake.

Chile is another animal altogether. They are relying on a multi-billion dollar rainy day fund they acculumlated from mining profits. The Haitians had little more than the clothes on their backs.

Well, there's a little PR conflict. Mexico initially bragged there was little structural damage from the quake due to its strong building codes. Later they determined 80% of downtown was gone and now they report 25,000 people without homes. Everyone in Mexico is apparently too busy fighting politics to notice. They wanted to put the best spin possible on the quake (it was Easter weekend after all) and that overshadowed the "please send help, there are 25,000 homeless" message.

IMO Mexico would bus all 25,000 of them to Rosarito Beach for a six months stay before they would ask for serious help. If they did ask- the international outpouring would be overwhelming I would think.

Calexico had quite a bit of damage and it was a good thing it was Spring Break. I guess one of the schools will not be able to open the rest of the year.

When we lived in Calexico, it was interesting to see people from other parts of California act as if the Imperial Valley did not exist---certainly not in California! It seems to be a little that way with Mexicali and that area.

If anyone in the US tried to help by bringing in relief supplies, construction materials, blankets, food, and clothes, we would have been stopped at the border and made to pay duties.:(

The South Bay Campus of the First Unitarian-Universalist Church of San Diego along with the Border Angels had a caravan of supplies in eight vehicles they took down yesterday to the Mexicali Valley---don't think they had any problems. One never knows.
