Pacifica and I had a great day out at Punta Chivato. I wanted to go to look for plants (what else, of course?!). Found several plants that I hadn't
yet seen out there that I've now added to my herbarium specimen collection.
The Casa Rata (Grusonia invicta) cacti were going wild and covered with buds, open flowers and withered ones too.
We had an unexpected encounter with this lovely creature:
A Red Diamond Rattlesnake.
We were on the road out to Dolphin Cove, a narrow, quiet side road. S/he was in the middle of the road. I jumped out of the car with camera in hand,
set on multiple frames and ready to go. I got to within about 15 feet (slowly) before s/he assumed this inquistive pose. Stayed like this for awhile
during which time we talked to some ATVers who had arrived a few minutes after we did and were also enthralled (we were all at a safe distance by
then). S/he lsoon ost interest and slithered off into the shade.
Glad we didn't encounter the snake while we were traipsing through the brush looking for plants and photo ops!

Not sure about how Flicker works, but with photoshop just copy and past the img tag directly into the post.
But I took the liberty to past and copy your photo address and when I got to the picture on flicker, I right clicked the photo, copied the location
listed there and then clicked the picture icon here and pasted that location, and bingo---
Here is your beautiful creature ----even though I do not like to run into these characters.
Try it for both pics and I will then remove it from this post. (removed)

Geez, taking me time to get this uploading stuff right with Flickr and then here. Now I know why it's easier to just post my own web pages!
Here's a few more:
This endemic species of wild cotton, Gossypium armourianum, is known only from a few collection sites in Baja California Sur. I added Punta Chivato to
that list last Spring.
This field has lots of ground cover. Only when you get close can you see the tiny spike-like inflorescences of Marina peninsularis which form
intricate mats.
Marina peninsularis is a plant in the pea family. It forms mats and has tiny flowers in spike-like inflorescences.
DT: wish I had the macro lens you now have. These tiny pea flowers drive me crazy! The individual flowers are about 1/4 inch each and the whole
