Mexicali Earthquake Relief

Donjulio - 4-15-2010 at 07:39 AM

A lot of the homes in the outlying ejido areas of Mexicali just crumbled with the earthquake. Wells caved in and now there are a lot of people living in tents. Those that had nothing now have less if thats even possible.

If you would like to donate to the relief fund we are collecting for food and water. PLEASE MAKE SURE that it is clearly marked that the funds are for the earthquake relief.

We hope to join a caravan with the Border Angels and support groups on Saturday to take down supplies. We understand they will need them for quite a while.

Good luck and hope you get lots of donations!

Helping Out

MrBillM - 4-15-2010 at 09:56 AM

I'm organizing a Caravan of my own staffed with those I know to be especially adept at dealing with a variety of problems that we will encounter. Although, we'll be leaving any day now hoping to bring relief to those deserving, there is still time for anyone so inclined to send whatever they think appropriate. The more we can raise, the more good we can do.

Promise.

Sancho,
I am sorry but I do not know anything about that location. We are just following the leaders from the Border Angels, or you can contact the Border Angels

Perhaps DonJulio knows more about that.

Good luck

Unfortunately this is copied and pasted from another site:

IMPORTANT: If you are interested in making sure your help reaches the poorest and more impacted territories we strongly encourage you to deliver the assistance yourself or contact the people and groups listed below. The official Governmental Drop off sites are not delivering the assistance as expected, the help is not flowing properly into the more needed persons and areas.

Don Julio's list is a good one. We just returned from San Felipe. We stopped at the relief center in Colonia de la Puerta (at the fire station). They told us they are most in need of food.
Donations can be dropped off by the fire station at KM36 on the West side of Hwy. 5 There is also a distribution center at KM32 on the East side of HWy. 5 (it is about a block off of the highway at the soccer (or baseball?) field). You can see both centers from Hwy. 5, no problem.
The road between Mexicali and San Felipe is in good shape, repairs were made very quickly and any remaining bumps are well marked. We saw nothing like the pictures posted from Hwy. 2 We did see, however, plenty of flooding in the agricultural area south of Mexicali. It seems everyone is living in tents. If you are heading down Hwy. 5, please drop off what you can. Costco is a great place to get canned meat, bags of pinto beans, rice, etc. Milk that doesn't need refrigeration is also appreciated.

Yesterday the Border Angels went with supplies to Ejido Oaxaca. The army is VERY well set up there. However, a woman at the plaza informed the group that there were people several blocks from the plaza and Soccer Field who needed supplies. It was an area where the canal broke and flooded the homes.

So some of supplies were distributed in that neighborhood---the lady who led the way led the distribution in a vacant lot. The vehicles that were still loaded headed for a more remote ejido---I do not remember the name as it was getting late and we headed back north as did tripledigitken.

They will be leading more caravans, but the drop off points for goods may change---will post them.

BTW--the leader of the Border Angels, Enrique marooones is one of the nicest and most caring persons I have met in a long time. He is all about other people and everything is volunteer. And he had everything set up with Mexican customs so that was a 5 minute operation.

And it is something to see the operation the Mexican Army has set-up.
