by Cali Cucaracha, staff food editor

First visit to Mi Kaza, across from 3 heads, Ensenada, was Saturday. Had an hour to kill while waiting to meet boat mechanic for finishing touches on boat before throwing it back into cruiseport marina slip.

My friend and I were only gringos in Mi Kaza at 9am. Owner, Les, explained that though tourism has hurt, he survives due to popularity with locals.

Juevos rancheros was my choice and desayuno gringo was my buddy's. The photo above is the j.r. dish and a solid value at 60pesos.

Noticed 2 laptops working, so wi-fi is available.

Service is very attentive, all is clean and Les is on the floor.

For my 5 cucaracha dive dining review:
NO: Unique/ethic atmosphere: It's a cafeteria, simple, clean, comfy. Not as funky or unusual as I prefer.
SI: Seats less than 100. It's likely 80-90
SI: Unique/ethnic food. It's home style mexican with some gringo favorites mixed in. No website, so couldn't show menu.
SI: Several item on menu less than $10. Nearly everything is less than 100p.
NO: Barstools and bar. My irish heritage enjoys a beverage. As a single, I'll dine at the bar when I'm alone. No liquor license, says Les, so that famous "family dining" euphemism applies.

That's 3 bugs out of 5 and a solid value. They also open at 6:30am! That's huge, as very few Ensenada breakfast shops open before 7:30/8. Link below juevos photo for location/details.

but that is just us. I am sure there are some somewhere.

your right Irene. not many places have such a good variety of food at great prices as Posada does.

irenemm - 5-2-2010 at 02:16 PM

Great Place! Been going there for about 10 years. They expanded 03? but kept the huge portrait of Princess Di ! Popular with locals. Great service . Mexican food . Breakfasts. Huge portions . great friendly service . bottomless coffee cup - no beer served. My only complaint is that at the time of the expansion they went from really good homemade chips to store bought round (mediocre) chips- minor complaint.

Doc...........I went there last Wednesday for the first time! Had a great breakfast and plan to return soon for lunch/dinner.

Bajahowodd - 5-3-2010 at 12:03 PM

Mi Kaza does serve one of the better breakfasts in town. But, as noted, zero ambience. I have eaten there many times. However, you can get great breakfast and have considerably nicer surroundings at Las Cazuelas on Sanguines, just up from the Navy base. Las Cazuelas is also usually packed with locals at breakfast time.

Bob H - 5-3-2010 at 12:19 PM

We have had breakfast at Mi Kaza many times over the years - never failed us! Would go there again over and over.

I'm not getting paid for this, but seriously, folks should try Las Cazuelas for desayuno.

Natalie Ann - 5-3-2010 at 04:44 PM

Las Cazuelas is perhaps my favorite Ensenada breakfast spot. That said, I look forward to trying Mi Kaza next time I'm in town.

BHW.... maybe think about starting a new review thread on Las Cazuelas... with detailed directions, etc.

I have found Mi Kaza (this thread review) to be a nice little local place to enjoy. The place is always clean, the food is very good and the prices are also good.

I've frequented Las Cazuelas for many years but in the recent past my car has been broken into twice in their parking lot.

I'm about ready to give them another try but if anything happens, I'll never go back!

Hotel near Mi Kaza

susanna - 5-3-2010 at 09:38 PM

We will be going to Ensenada in the near future and would like to try Mi Kaza for Breakfast so is there a nice Hotel nearby? Also which are places of interest to visit?

irenemm - 5-3-2010 at 09:51 PM

We stay at the Del Valle. Have stayed since it open about 10 -12 years ago. it is on the same street as the Kaza it is between 3rd and 4th on Riveroll. It has inside parking and you can walk down to the Kaza.
It is alwys clean and most of the time quiet. the phone # is from the states 011 52 646 178 1568 or 174 0466 or 178 2224.
No pool but they have cable, the bad part the cable is from Puerto Rico.
Enjoy your stay

Oh, I was thinking of a place called Kiki's ... sorry for the confusion on my part. But Kiki's is a great local place for breakfast!

Kaza... Kiki.... brain failure

Las Cazuelas de Kiki ? they have good food. But since they moved the service is not very good. We always ate there when it was behind the Chevy dealer. the new place bad service gave them 3 tries. NO more.

bajabound2005 - 5-4-2010 at 06:16 AM

Monique's Cafeteria on 9th across from the police station has great food and great service. Never a disappointment.

Ahhh... just found out this info regarding Kiki's...

Los Portales is the breakfast place behind the Chevy dealership. It used to be Kiki's but the owner passed away.

There must be like 10-12 hotels within a five minute walk of Mi Kaza. Most are fairly decent. It boils down to a matter of taste. If we want to stay right in the heart of the tourist zone, we usually opt for Posada El Rey Sol, the owner of which, Jean Loup Bitterlin, also operates a long-time favorite French restaurant, El Rey Sol, on the next block of Lopez Mateo. if we want to be a bit farther away, we stay at Hotel San Nicolas. San Nicolas has a huge, olympic-style pool and it also houses a Caliente casino.

Hey Everyone. I'm the owner of Mi Kaza Les Starnes. Just want to let you know that we have moved location only 3 blocks from our original location. (bigger space with our own parking!). We are now on Blvd Costero (Blvd Lazaro Card##as oficially) #546-C just one side of the Proturismo offices and in front of the Gasoline Station Rudamentkin. For those who go out at night we are across the street from Anthony's. We're still a short walk from most hotels.

Hope to see you soon!

How late is Antony's open? :P:P

location

huesos - 1-10-2016 at 04:19 PM

It would be great if I could figure out where this place actually is, across from 3 heads?, in front of gas station Rudamentkin?, let's not make it too easy.
For that matter, where is Posada Don Diego, in Vincente Guererro?
You wouldn't want anybody to actually be able to find it.
The thumbnail map on the website shows highway one with no explanation of where.
Keep this all a secret and hold the volume of business down.

bajaguy - 1-10-2016 at 04:36 PM

Mi kaza is across the street and kitty-corner from the Rudametkin PEMEX. Between the Tourist Info Center with the lighthouse and the fish taco places on the Costero......just south of the stoplight at Teniente Azueta, on your right side.
