New Film: South of the border (documentary)

Ken Cooke - 5-4-2010 at 07:08 PM

No matter what side of the political fence we stand, this looks to be an interesting documentary! The film opens on July 2, 2010.

From Wikipedia.org:

(Oliver) Stone has recently completed a documentary about Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and the rise of progressive, leftist governments in Latin America. Stone, who is a supporter of Chavez and the Bolivarian Revolution, hopes the film will get the Western world to rethink the Venezuelan president and socialist policies. Titled South Of The Border, the documentary premiered at the Venice Film Festival in September 2009.

Thanks Ken I'll keep a heads up for it!

I'm sorry Ken but Oliver Stone plays loose with the facts, very loose. He will twist the truth to fit what ever his agenda is.

It is obvious while watching this trailer, but I did appreciate that he allowed for his interviewees to speak and have their text subtitled.

I don't think that Sean Penn made the trip to Venezuela. The entire film crew is shown while taping S. American dignitaries.

I don't understand your response, sorry
However, Sean most definetly went to Venezuela, but I am not sure if Oliver Stone has gone to Venezuela.

He did???

What was he doing there?? To meet Hugo Chavez? Was he invited, or was he protesting media consolidations? I didn't hear about this.:?:

In some ways it is. But, there are moderate voices provided by the Presidents of Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina. The South American continent definitely leans to the Left, and it is interesting to hear precisely why.

I don't think there is much provided information-wise from the the Mexican Presidency or those from Central America, but I want to learn more from these leaders. I already know plenty about what is happening in Colombia, and I traveled to Peru and learned there how those two Government's are our staunchest allies.

Ken,

Here is some background on Sean Penn and Chavez.

We're planning our next trip this summer. Our short list includes; Puerto Rico, La Paz, Cancun, Costa Rica. The criteria are - Latin music, tropical environs, nice sandy beaches, relative low cost.

Lets get together soon. :bounce:

In the trailer, it is interesting that the focus is on the people of the barrios, and of not the educated or anyone from the ruling class in that country.

So, this Memorial Day trip to Mision Santa Maria is too soon for her?

Shell Island is going to be visited by us this summer, more than once... awesome four wheeling... do join us! There isn't a cheaper vacation beach destination and you get the nicest beach in North America, just a day's drive from home...

One problem is that Leidys needs coverage from the sunlight. Her skin breaks out with too much exposure. Memorial Day weekend is too soon, as her paperwork won't be ready until early June. We would gladly rent a hotel and visit you in the late afternoon through evening though.

The reason San Felipe doesn't fill the bill is that Leidys wants to go out at night, get dressed up, and dance to Salsa music.

David K - 5-6-2010 at 09:36 AM

Oh, I see... It won't be easy for her being married to a "Desert Outlaw" like you, will it? Big hats and sunblock...

In all seriousness, Sean is a HUGE Hugo fan. If you go on google you can probably find the videos, but, yes he is firends with Hugo and has been down to visit more than once.

Pole Line 2010 is in late November. I'm dying to get back on the trail.

She might have a difficult time with the sun next April, but we'll work something out so that she stays protected from the sunlight.

BajaBlanca - 5-8-2010 at 09:43 PM

Most of you may not know, but I am of Brazilian descent ... I was born in the US of Brazilian parents .... the interesting thing about Lula (pres of Br) is that he can not even speak Portuguese correctly - he was born dirt poor and rose up by supporting the voice of the laborors

He has made it his mission to end hunger in Brazil during his term and as far as I understand, he has met this goal

It will be interesting to see the movie ... for sure we are being taught to fear Hugo Chavez on TV ... and for so many years we all feared Castro via the media too

Review: NY Times

Ken Cooke - 6-26-2010 at 01:33 PM

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/26/movies/26stone.html?src=me

Bajahowodd - 6-26-2010 at 02:23 PM

Hmmm. It's not really a review of the movie. The author is not a NYT movie reviewer. It's more of a critique of Stone, his politics and methods. That said, Many, if not most countries in South America witness immense poverty among their people. Even in the more economically developed countries such as Brazil and Argentina. A vast disparity exists between a relatively small wealthy class and a very large underclass. Those of us familiar with Mexico can relate to that.

The US has long ago taken its ineffective and cruel boycott of Cuba to a point of ridiculous. I can understand, given the nexus of the Cuba experience, the height of the cold war, Soviet intervention, Etc., we have long memories. I just think it may be unfair to try and link Chavez with Castro. Unfettered free markets and private enterprise may not hold the solution to eliminating the rampant poverty in South America. And perhaps Chavez' socialist attempts will also fail. But, if they do, and there are a number of examples pointing to its failure down the road, in my opinion, that failure should emanate from within, and not by foreign intervention.

It wasn't that many years ago that the US supported dictators throughout the central and South American region. It just seems to me that seeing Chavez employ, subject to your own personal opinion, quasi- democratic means to effect change in his country represents a less onerous method than did the brutal dictators of the past.

Americans need to have that knee-jerk checked out by a shrink.

I love that they have taken on the name "tea baggers". The modern connotation of the term fits them well. Send in your photos of being tea bagged.

Ken Cooke - 1-18-2011 at 09:23 PM

I finally was able to rent this DVD, and it provided a fairly lopsided/shallow view of S. American politics. Pretty bad documentary.

CortezBlue - 1-18-2011 at 09:50 PM

Not a documentary, but more of a propaganda film. I found it very interesting but definitely bent to the support Sean Penn's liking. I do however, have to say that Brazil has done some pretty amazing things over the past few years. Between their reduction of non-reliance on foreign oil and a switch to alcohol based fuels, there economy is rocking. They have connected with China and are doing some pretty amazing things.
