Bob H - 5-5-2010 at 11:21 AM

What are some of the special events today anywhere in Baja for Cinco de May celebration?

Most people don't know that back in 1912, Hellmann's mayonnaise was manufactured in England. In fact, the Titanic was carrying 12,000 jars of the condiment scheduled for delivery in Vera Cruz, Mexico, which was to be the next port of call for the great ship after it's stop in New York. This would have been the largest single shipment of mayonnaise ever delivered to Mexico. But as we know, the great ship did not make it to New York. The ship hit an iceberg and sank, and the cargo was forever lost. The people of Mexico, who were crazy about mayonnaise, and were eagerly awaiting its delivery, were disconsolate at the loss. Their anguish was so great, that they declared a National Day of Mourning, which they still observe to this day. The National Day of Mourning occurs each year on May 5th and is known, of course, as Sinko de Mayo.

HAPPY CINCO DE MAYO!!

Around here the schools are still out---nice 5 day weekend for the kids.

But seems everyone else is working---even the Delegacion that was closed on Monday and Tuesday. Now if they will just do what they promised us---maybe they will use Cinco de Mayo as an excuse.:biggrin:

Unless it is close to the border, I think most of the best Cinco de Mayo celebrations are north of the border.

DENNIS - 5-5-2010 at 11:56 AM

Thanks, Timo. I knew there was a logical explaination for nobody doing anything around here.
Ohh...wait a minute. It's lunch time.

Good one, Timo :tumble:

I remember back in the '50's CINCO DE MAYO was a very big deal indeed in my home town of Coronado, across the bay from San Diego. We usually caravanned down to Ensenada for the "festivities", or at least TJ----------very fond memories!!! What a blast!!!!

If we could not get away, we had a huge beach party------all fun. To this day I just "feel good" on Cinco de Mayo, and wish our friends to the south (and up here in the USA) a great day!!!!

Racist feelings, for sure!!!!

Cinco de Miracle Whip ?

MrBillM - 5-5-2010 at 12:16 PM

That's the full-page ad in today's L.A. Times.

This one's for you Barry

Growing up in the same area. I too have fond memories of celebrating "Cinco de Mayo" for reasons i can't remember. BUT it was fun. Since when do Nomads need a reason to celebrate?

Is this not a NOB special day? Methinks most Mexicans could give a ratsass about it. It's not their independence day. Perhaps in Puebla.

It's really all about Corona, not the French.

tripledigitken - 5-5-2010 at 01:42 PM

Sharks,

Sound a little cranky. Why not have a Cinco de Mayo 20% off special, or 2 for 1 Shrimp c-cktails?

Groundhog Day, Secretaries Day, Mother's Day all good opportunities to boost sales.

If Mexico had defeated Arizona instead of the French at Puebla- they'd be celebrating in the streets! Maybe next year.

Schools closed here in Rosarito all week, even colleges. No one knows why but the kids aren't complaining- just the mothers. I did see that Cinqo de Miracle Whip ad- but liked the sinking of the mayonnaise better.

My daughters were telling Tia Lupe, who is visiting from La Paz, about cinco de mayo last night, and she said, "What's that?"

Guess the mayo company, the beer companies, and El Toritos thought it up!

It is not a paid holiday here but a legal one. the paid holiday was on the 1st. of May. Which fell on Sat. so the teachers want a day because of that.
the only school open in Vicente Guerrero was the Catholic High School. everything closed until Thursday. Then Mothers Day is on Monday so the kids will not have school either. then teachers day is on the 15Th which is a Sat. so they will either get Fri or Mon off for there day. To many days off for the kids. Not learning enough. Kids love it parents not so much.
Cinco de Mayo is a U.S. party marketing thing only.
Viva The UNITED STATES. Cinco day Mayo lives.

Rosarito is Quiet on Cinco de Mayo Afternoon

Gypsy Jan - 5-5-2010 at 05:03 PM

No banners or activity around the Rosarito Beach Hotel or the Festival Hotel.

Not much traffic and lots of school kids in uniforms on the street and/or getting into buses.

irenemm - 5-5-2010 at 09:47 PM

Today on Cinco de Mayo I met Toneart at Mama Espinoza´s and took him to meet Mama. We had a very nice visit and I found Tony to be a very nice person even though he does not agree with me politically.

Well, the cat's outta the bag now

Sharksbaja - 5-6-2010 at 12:23 AM

Did Cinqo in Old Town S.D. last night. Can report on scarce parking, over-priced beer, over-flowing restaurants and lots of white people. Stops included the Alamo(strong marguis), O.T. back alley beer garden($5 beer in plastic cups, $2 cover, DJ) and the comfy Old Town Saloon.

Upon exit at approx 7:30, I-5 was backed up in both directions with patrons waiting to take our spots.

After a few, escaped to South Beach Bar & Grill/Ocean Beach for sun.., er, I mean fogset, $2.50 Dos Equis and a spectacular seafood stew(not on the menu). SBB&G gets my coveted 5 c-ckroach Dive Dining rating guide.

Today was mi ninietas first day back at school here in El Tule.We went to the beach yesterday and it was pretty full with Gringo kids that live down here.Only a few Mexicanos. What a great visit this has been!Weather is perfect and the surf, wow!Yesterday it was HUGE!! As an ex-surfer, I estimated a "true" wave height of at least six feet, maybe more!! Cinco de Mayo was nothing more than another day here:biggrin:

May 5, 1961: The 1st American in Space

Pompano - 5-6-2010 at 08:36 AM

There are many reasons to celebrate Cinco de Mayo:

Here's one...

From Cape Canaveral, Florida, Navy Commander Alan Bartlett Shepard Jr. is launched into space aboard the Freedom 7 space capsule, becoming the first American astronaut to travel into space. The suborbital flight, which lasted 15 minutes and reached a height of 116 miles into the atmosphere, was a major triumph for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

Any there any more Cinco de Mayos out there? Why yes. there is....

1809
Mary Kies of South Killingly, Conn., became the first woman to be granted a patent. The patent was for the rights to a technique for weaving straw with silk and thread.

1821
Napoleon Bonaparte died on the island of St. Helena.

1891
Carnegie Hall (then known as Music Hall) opened in New York City. Peter Tchaikovsky was the guest conductor.

1925
John Scopes was arrested in Tennessee for teaching Darwinism.

1981
Bobby Sands of the Irish Republican Army died in a prison hospital on the 66th day of his hunger strike.

2004
Pablo Picasso's "Boy with a Pipe" became the most expensive painting ever sold.

All much better than a small ..and all but forgotten.. squirmish with the French. With all these Cinco de Mayos coming out of the woodwork, it's no wonder it's a day to party!

I was astonished when my wife told me of all the "days" in Mexico. :o May Day, Mothers Day, Students Day, Doctors Day, Childrens Day, Teachers Day, Womens Day, Grandparents Day, Nurses Day, Day Of The Dead, Columbus Day, Benito Juarez Day, Fathers Day, Independence Day, Revolution Day, Cinco De Mayo, Labor Day. Good Friday, Semana Santa, the liost goes on! Many are days of no school, no work for many, and many are paid holidays! No wonder nothing gets done in Mexico. :light:, sorta:lol: Hey Pomp, thats the 'tude dude, search the date, there is always a reason to celebrate! Oh, fish as well!
