"I am continuously enamored with Tijuana. It is invigorating to me when I see how easy it is for Mexicans there to drink on the beach, drive without a seat belt (and in many cases a license and in some regions, plates), j-walk, buy drugs, hire hookers (against the law but unenforced), and start small businesses."

Is so wrong on virtually every point.

Mexicans may feel free but it is a false feeling. True freedom is based not based on governmental failure to enforce democratically enacted rule of law. Mexicans practice anarchy...a false freedom.

landgabriel - 5-11-2010 at 01:46 PM

Dave, you clearly have no clue what anarchism is about. I suggest wikipedia as a starting point.

Wikipedia

Absence of government does not equal disorder. That is a false association. But you can go on thinking you are mroe free in the U.S. as long as you want. Just don't wait for me while you stand on the corner until the light gives you permission to cross the street.

Perfect

Dave-

Thanks for escalating the intellectial altitude of this thread. Now go write a more well articulated essay than the one I got published if you have qualms with my political philosophy.

Instead of relying on the corrupted, inefficient police, people in Mexico take their safety into their own hands.

Not true, actually, Tijuana law enforcement is currently enjoying a lot of respect from the community.

and in the neighborhoods I frequent (lower to middle class), I feel as safe as most neighborhoods North of the border.

Good luck with that, i sure don't feel safe when i am there, and i am a native.

With a lack of exacting building regulations, people are free to customize their homes to their whims and fancies.

Another myth, as soon as you start building without a permit, you will get the visit of a city inspector with a nice fat fine.

Small businesses flourish in Mexico without strict and/or enforced licensing necessities.

Not true, even small chiclet vendors are regulated and are issued permits.

despite the drug-trade-dominated Mexican economic environment,

LOL!!! Mexico has a 1 trillion economy, the drug trade economy is anywhere from 13 to 40 billion, so it clearly does not dominate the economy. It is anything from 1 to 4 percent of GDP.

I can go on and on, this article has many facts wrong.

Thanks for the pasta salad receipe.

gnukid - 5-11-2010 at 10:26 PM

Nice job Gabriel. Very interesting.

One aspect I thought you might wish to include is the value of money laundering from drug trade to Mexico's banks which is estimated to be 10 times the value of drug trade, since banks work by loaning money and investing based on deposits. Additionally there is economic value added to Mexico's economy for mordida from street drug trade/crime, increased ministerial police, judicial, prisons and military for The Mexico Plan to fight the war on drugs.

Considering the financial profit associated from these associated drug trade profits would put the value at far more than 10 times the value of 40 billion in drug trade = 10 x 40 billion = 400 billion at least.
