pappy - 7-18-2004 at 08:02 AM
just got a call from a friend in regards to another friend's son and daughter in-law.after spending a couple of weeks all over baja on the way home
they stopped in at la fonda wher they were greeted at gunpoint and had their truck and entire contents (surfboards etc.) taken fro them.
so, be careful in that area-i wouldn't expect this at that location.
This sounds extremely fishy
jrbaja - 7-18-2004 at 08:05 AM
got any more details?
lafonda

Next to Km. 58/Alistos south of Rosarito, on the old Hwy. 1 (free road), just before it turns inland towards La Mision.

You have a good memory. It wasn't an LA cop it was one our finer SDPD cops and it has been over 20 years ago. One hell of a cop but he set himself
up by pulling down into the ravine that runs into the ocean from the free road just north of Playa La Mision. No one could see their camper from
either road.
Needless to say he has very few nice things to say about Baja.
In my first book I tell the story of my wife being robbed at gun point in our casita in La Salina. The same guy killed an old gringo in Playa la
Mision a week later. The Mexican cops eventually caught the 'American' who had also killed someone in Flordia.
Stuff happens
Cyndarouh - 7-18-2004 at 04:54 PM
Was this at night or during the day time? We had breakfast at La Mission yesterday morning. What a real drag to say the least. Hope they are okay.
Thanks for the info.
pappy - 7-18-2004 at 05:09 PM
unfortunately i don't have all the details.could very well have been people from our side of the border.the only thing i know is the local authorities
are "on it" and have either seen the truck or have in fact retrieved it.more as his dad finds out more.from the sounds of it, it happened in the am
when they were getting ready to head home.
Cyndarouh - 7-18-2004 at 05:12 PM
When was this? Day or Night time? LOL we just ate breakfast right by there yesterday morning. Thanks for the info.
Rip Off
Bajasurf - 7-18-2004 at 05:32 PM
Just a few years ago a friend 's mother and her husband were murdered in Rosarito. I also believe the murderer and his other slime side were captured
or he was killed by the police. Another protection I have started to carry is a 3 million candle light lantern. I have given an undesireable the
full force of the light and he was blinded for enough time for me to have taken him apart with other means had I desired. Which I will not mention
how. Anyone carrying a cross bow?
pappy - 7-19-2004 at 09:36 AM
here is the latest-it was either last friday or saturday around noon.supposedly my friends son and wife just pulled into la fonda.he got out and was
approached by two guys about 30.one shot two rounds into the air, then another two at his feet.the wife and dog start freaking out .the two take their
truck and all it's contents- a 2001 silver toyota xtra-cab 4x4 with green camper shell.inside were two andaerson surfboards and camping gear.now here
is the real bummer-he stayed in baja one day past his insurance
termination.(ouch!)any help/input would be appreciated.thanks.(i myself am still keeping an open mind as to what actually took place)
bajalou - 7-19-2004 at 09:41 AM
I think a open mind is really important on this one.

Now it sounds even fishier!
jrbaja - 7-19-2004 at 09:43 AM
4 shots fired in broad daylight at La Fonda on a Friday or Saturday around noon.
Had to be gringos if it happened at all. Mexicans are much smarter than that.
If this actually happened, a report to the soldiers would have started a full scale assault to find the culprits.
Don't suppose they got a license number, filed a police report, or anything like that. Or witnesses? 12:00 noon on a Friday or Saturday at La
Fonda???
hmmmmmmmmmmmmm........

Baja Bernie - 7-19-2004 at 03:47 PM
Yea! Right!
My mind just closed on this one.
DanO - 7-19-2004 at 07:51 PM
Things would have been absolutely hopping at La Fonda at that time of day. Big lunch crowd, people checking in and out of the hotel. Four shots
fired in that area at that time would have the local cops and the army down there in minutes, not to mention George's security guard, the guy who
watches the cars at Hotel La Mision, etc. And the guy overstayed on his insurance? Real big HMMMMMMMMMMM from me. I'll be sure to ask about this
the next time I stop in for lunch.
Bob H - 7-19-2004 at 08:17 PM
Now now, JR... let's not blame any gringos on a story that is soooooo fishy. Please.
Bob H
pappy - 7-19-2004 at 08:19 PM
update-
apparently the truck, along with the suspects were aprehended today.the victims are suppossedly headed back down to identify the two guys
aprehended.an intruiging episode to be sure.still keeping an open mind as to what really happened.
Just teasing
jrbaja - 7-19-2004 at 08:52 PM
on that one Bob. Mexicans generally don't have guns. The ones that do are not into stealing trucks as a rule.
Can't wait to hear the outcome of this one
elgatoloco - 7-19-2004 at 10:52 PM
Pappy Keep us updated!
Good to hear the perps were caught. We spend LOTS of time in the area, even though it's not the 'real Baja'
We will wait to get ALL the facts when the next issue of the GG comes out!

All the facts

from the gringo gazzette.

That's a good one!
Cyndarouh - 7-20-2004 at 12:40 PM
We were right by La Fonda Sat morning eating at La Mission aroun 9 AM Sat. it was already packed down there. People all over the place could hardly
get a spot to park our F250. Seems odd or some one really needed to get the heck out of there in a hurry. Just very odd to me in broad day light.
We stop off there so often to eat breakfast or lunch. Never in many, many years have had any prob. not in that area any way.
JESSE - 7-20-2004 at 01:09 PM
I don't have a reason to doubt the story, it can happen here or anywhere in the world, but it is odd that this would happen in La Fonda, the reasons
why i think some are questioning this are the following:
1.-La Fonda is in the middle of nowhere, you shoot a gun and where are you going to run? take the road south or north and you eventually have to go
tru a check point, so thats no good.
2.-If the people doing this escape to the hills around, that means they are locals, and any local crazy enough to be doing this in such a small
community would get caught quickly.
So i think it was a one time deal, or something other than a rip off, or perhaps it never happened, if i had a gun i could find many many easier and
more profitable targets other than ripping off some guy i dont even know in the middle of nowhere La Fonda.
Just my 2 cents.
pappy - 7-21-2004 at 08:25 AM
it does sound like a rather strange thingto happen at la fonda, especially during the day-howvwer, stranger things have happened.still keeping an open
mind until i get all info and results, which i will pass on.
ps-the victims think the perps were high on something, given the way they acted.
Cyndarouh - 7-22-2004 at 08:54 AM
What a mess for this young couple. I do hope they get the truck back at least. And with little expense. Have they contacted and talked with there US
insurance company? State Farm and Discover Baja were of great help to us when our Toyota was taken last year. I did find out that State Farm changed
two years earlier to only covering 50 miles into Mex. We lucked out by only three miles. Keep us posted.
Car Theft at La Fonda
The Gull - 7-23-2004 at 07:24 AM
There was a theft of a Honda at La Fonda one Saturday night last year when I went there for drinks with friends. I patiently waited for the Honda to
back out of the parking spot and considered myself lucky to get a spot right near the opening to the walkway. About an hour later a young American
man went out and said that (described my car) was in his spot and his Honda was gone. He was right.
What was really bad in my mind, was that the large gentleman who gave the impression that he was "watching the cars" as if he was security did not
flinch while the Honda was backing out. I never did notice during the hubbub in the parking lot when I left, whether the large security guy was still
around.
In my 35 years of driving in Baja, I fear La Fonda and Puerto Nuevo the most when parking.
Grover---has it been 10 or 15 years ago?
capn.sharky - 7-23-2004 at 09:14 PM
I remember that guy. I thought he was driving his truck along the dirt road that leads down to the Old Mill and the bandido came out from besides the
road. Too bad he can't carry down in Baja. Time sure moves along fast---it seems like it was just four or five years ago.
Desertbull - 7-27-2004 at 10:06 PM
Moral of the story...Don't drive a Toyota!
Neal Johns - 7-28-2004 at 08:48 PM
Hey, watch it DB!
I'm getting a new hat that says:

I'd rather push a Toyota than ride in a Diesel Dodge!
Desertbull - 7-28-2004 at 09:37 PM
Ahhhhhhhh...you're the exception!
I'm getting a hat that says, "Park your Toyota in the bed of my Dodge."
Markitos - 7-29-2004 at 07:04 AM
Ahhh I remmeber the ole days, running around Tijauna, Ensanada and beach camping all over the Norte. Never had a problem. Unless the Tecate got the
better of us. Funny thing now a days I dont stop till San Quintin. Who knows, maybe I just cant wait to get outa traffic or in my old age all that
Norte action just dosent do it for me! Amazing how the heart rate starts to drop at Santo Tomas.
The last rip off was in Colonet and the only person to blame was me

Haven a garage sale right on the bluff as I slept so peacefully
There are some thing you just have to lock up no matter where you are!!
Mexitron - 7-29-2004 at 07:20 AM
Same here Markitos--Colonet no mas--too many night crawlers.....pretty much the Sister's area for me now.
surfer jim - 7-29-2004 at 08:36 AM
On the beach at Colonet?....how long ago was this?....
marla - 7-29-2004 at 10:04 AM
If they got the truck back, that's great. FYI, 21st century insurance now covers vehicles to a certain point south of the border, I think it might be
100 miles can't remember. I called to ask about it and they said not to count on it, to still get regular Mexican insurance to comply with Mexican
law, and they would not be hte primary carrier, but they had so many requests from customers they decided to insure in Mexico. So if they had 21st
century they might still be insured even if their earlier insurance expired. Were these folks from Orange County? If so I would like to talk to
them....
Markitos - 7-31-2004 at 07:22 AM
Two years ago jim ...... But like I said it was all my falt.. The morning was fun thou, They even stole my cloths

I had to drive back into town ....naked and buy a pair of sweat pants from the market there... gave some kid a few
paso's and sent him to buy them for me
To much funny now as I look back.
The realy funny thing is the poor guys didnt see my money sitting in the drivers door but they did get everthing eles. They where realy nice guys and
left my keys in the door of my truck and didnt steal that too and they took the ID's out of my wallet so I could get back into the US. All in all
,very nice Bandito's
Mexitron - 7-31-2004 at 10:27 AM
Yep--bad news there at Colonet--we got ripped off twice over the years--worst thing I lost was my beloved Minolta XGM 35 mm camera--haven't found a
camera that I knew so well since.
