Thanks Bob

Debra just did the ID for me of the flower---I will learn sometime. :-)

orange globe mallow, Sphaeralcea ambigua

I like orange globe mallow---sounds like a candy bar.

.... or some type of specialty margarita!

Beautiful pix. Orange Globe Mallow does sound nice... but we always called that plant "Pink Eye Flower". As kids we thought that even looking at it for more than 60 seconds could give you pink eye. Definitely we didn't touch 'em, that would give you pink eye for sure!

That might be a bit of an exaggeration, but I'm still a little hesitant to look at that picture too long. 15 secs should be OK though...

Now I will never forget the name of this flower----

Bob, I like the margarita association.

Jeff, I just had to research this potentially dangerous plant and at Desert Wildflowers

I found this
Quote:

The star-shaped leaf hairs are an eye irritant to some people. Thus, the name Sore Eye Poppy or Pink Eye Flower.

You were very smart children.

Love it!!

ecomujeres - 5-19-2010 at 03:55 PM

It's often called "Mal de ojo" in español.

Jeff´s story is really funny and reminds me of Pacifica, who won´t look at Poison oak while passing it, because she swears that once when she saw the plant then looked at her arm, a patch of poison oak later showed up right on that spot!

I just love "Pink Eye Flower" and will have to keep that in my data banks for future walks!

Diana, I wish I had a longer screen to look at the entire cardon photo all at once. I love the big size as it is, but I have to scroll :). I could look at it all day, it is just so gorgeous.

Neat cardon flower, Diane. You're doin' real good with that new lens.

makana.gabriel ----THANKS

Nena---still learning about it, but also finding I love that lens!

Debra,
Here ya go! I think this should be close.

So now there should be a list of plants that are dangerous to look at.

I remember going wild flower picking one day...there are so many puple, yellow and white flowers but oh that orange one would really make a bouquet complete so as I was reaching for it Juan yelled...AGUAS...which means look out...I thought there was a snake or something and jumped back...then he told me if I touched that plant then rubbed my eyes,...I'd go blind!!!! ewwwwww. I give it a wide berth now.

Mexitron - 5-19-2010 at 05:27 PM

Been around those many times, even planted a few of them, but never knew about the eye irritation...lucky I guess.

DianaT - 5-19-2010 at 06:07 PM

Yikes, I posted a picture of what is turning out to be perhaps a little evil monster lurking around that little beautiful flower---irritation, pink eye, blindness----dangerous to touch, and maybe even dangerous to look at.

And to think that I handled the little beast in trying to hold it still for the picture. :o I won't do that again----

I believe there are other colors---do they also have these powers?

I've spent many hours handling all sorts of these flowers, in the Mallow family. It is always said that the star-like hairs can be irritating if they get in the eyes. But I've never seen them stick to my hands to then be transferred to my eyes. They are well-attached to the plant!

Then again, I've handled an unknown plant, took parts home to fondle, dissect, press, photograph and then eventually identify, only to learn at the end that it may cause contact dermatitis! None of these ever did bother me, though, and I'm an allergic type!

I've not found many plants (yet), except cacti, that are "dangerous" to handle. Just don't rub the plant parts in your eyes and you'll be fine:lol:
