Anybody (the Hag) know the name of the best songbird in Baja. In my neck of the woods anyway.
Has a red breast and a small red streak down it's back and is the size of a blackbird/large finch. Never got close enough for a picture.

Are you talking about a Cenzontle..not sure of the spelling. I think it is a type of mockingbird that has about 26 different calls...it sounds like a whack of different birds in a bush and also imitates other birds and whistles etc...my favorite song bird here. It always makes me laugh..just when I think I've heard his whole repetoire, he comes out with another outrageous call.

Here are some Youtube videos, see if it's there. The Cenzontle truly is amazing.

Iflyfish, thanks for the video. Truly amazing bird.

I've heard mockingbirds imitate door chimes and car alarms. Funny stuff.

Pinzón Méxicano (house finch). Male has red (or orange) breast, head, and rump. Female is several tones of brownish gray and strongly barred vertically on her breast. The male is very vocal this time of year, and I think he sounds pretty good. Find him here: http://bcsbirds.com

Nezahualcoyotl, the Aztec poet/king wrote a poem about the cenzontle (northern mocking bird). He ascribes 400 voices to it. The poem is on the old 100p note right under the double line to the right of his earing.

I have heard mockingbirds imitate many birds, frogs, coyotes, cars, etc. A friend told me he once heard a hawk screaming and looked to see 2 mockingbirds, one chasing the other. The chaser was doing the hawk imitation, and the chasee was making very good time and not looking back at all.

Thanks ! It'sure looks like a house finch. Great fun to listen to.
Building a nest in one of my sconces with a wandering jew in it. Second nest in the same plant. Plant survived the first one pretty well. Raised 2 fledglings (out of 4 eggs), whom just flew the coop a week ago.
