For those of you that have Magic Jacks, are you having problems with calls breaking up? We just upgraded our Telmex DSL from 1 Mb to 2 Mb thinking
that that was the problem. It didn't help. We still get break-ups on every call, even tho speed tests indicate we are getting about 1.5 Mb down and
.25 Mb up. Since voice only requires 12 Kb of bandwidth I doubt the problem is with our DSL.
Previously we would get an occasional problem but generally with one redial the problem disappeared. Now here in Ensenada ALL calls are lousy.
I have heard that MJ's network capacity has been oversold and that may be the problem. If so, all of us would be suffering the same fate. Before
switching to Vonage I would love to hear from other MJ users.

havent had a problem here...I shut down other programs when calling..and as you say...redialing sometimes improves quality...sometimes depends on what
time of day too for some reason.dtbushpilot - 5-28-2010 at 09:33 AM
I haven't used my magicjack in MX for a couple of months but shutting down everything else definitely helps.Timo1 - 5-28-2010 at 09:35 AM
Is MJ or Skype the better phone ??dtbushpilot - 5-28-2010 at 09:40 AM
I like the magicjack because its a regular phone but when it isn't working well Skype seems to work fine. If I could only have one I would go with the
Skype as it seems to work all the time everywhere. I also only have a US plan with the magicjack so I can't call MX on it just the US. I can call
anywhere in the world with Skype for pennies.....dtTimo1 - 5-28-2010 at 09:44 AM

My sister calls me from Baja on skype when we are in the states. Sometimes ok, but other times it is awful. It seems to be the worst in the late
afternoon for some reason----and sometimes if we hang up and I call back, it is better.dtbushpilot - 5-28-2010 at 10:28 AM
For $20 a year more I'd get both. When MJ works good it's hard to beat. I've talked to someone for hours at a time from MX to the US on the MJ without
a problem. I go to it first because being a regular telephone it is easier for me to hear and talk on than the headphones.
My wife likes the Skype because she can talk to her friend in Canada with video on her computer.
I remember not so many years ago having to buy a Ladatel card and call the States from a pay phone for a lot of pesos per minute. Technology sure has
changed......dtKeri - 5-28-2010 at 10:54 AM
You can call Mex with your magicjack. go to their web page to your acct and put money on international calling. It costs me 3 cents a minute. I too
have some cut up calls but usually when I redial its ok. I wouldn't trade it for anything. All my calls to my family are free and I like the regular
phone best. and you can travel with it. It works with the new telcel 3G also. Great,k

Started off OK but now unusable. IMO, Skype ain't much better.
Like anything else in this world...you get what you pay for.

I have 2 and they never have worked very good here. I paid the extra 5 year plan to save money. jokes on me they don't work very good.
oh well. skype it's ok too.
i just pay the .22 a minute on Koala calling and it is always good.LaTijereta - 5-28-2010 at 12:16 PM
MJ works well here in Loreto..
It is a good idea to reboot the hardrive every few days to clearout all the junk
Also, be sure the top tab is on "DSL", and has not shifted over to "Air Card".
It is best to have your phone directly plugged into the MJ, as we did have problems with "cordless" phones working off a base unit losing their
conection.

From a review in PCMag.com, while they raved about MJ, there was this singular underlying worry about the company's ultimate survival inasmuch as they
state, through their parent company, YMAX, that they have what appears to be tremendous investment and overhead.
"MagicJack's call quality is amazing—almost too good to be true. YMax reps say they can deliver such great sound because they built the operation as a
straight phone company rather than an Internet voice provider. YMax worked to become the only such company certified in all 50 states, which, its reps
claim, allows it more gateways linking the Internet and the telcos than any other voice provider has. That means it maintains control of calls much
longer than a regular VoIP provider, which in turn translates into high call quality. I have no way of verifying the company's infrastructure claims,
but the voice quality speaks for itself.
What worried me is that this network sounds expensive, yet YMax is charging so little. That's how SunRocket got killed. Then again, magicJack customer
base was growing at 30 percent a week while the product was still in beta, according to the company, so maybe I'm worried about nothing. And after
all, should the service go belly up, you still have alternatives: It's not as if the telecom robber barons will disappear."backninedan - 5-28-2010 at 05:21 PM
No problems at all with my MagicJack, clear signal.Woooosh - 5-28-2010 at 05:42 PM
I went a different route. I have vonage and forward all calls to my Mexico land line (had to have one for the DSL). My TelNor package includes 4MB
speed and unlimited USA and Mexico calls. I never use the actual Vonage phone so the quality is land-line for free. People just dial my USA phone
number and it rings to my Mexco landline without any TelNor charges. You do need to check caller ID when you answer though.noproblemo2 - 5-28-2010 at 06:18 PM
I'll stick with skype, works best for me....pepino - 5-28-2010 at 07:08 PM
Sounds like this should have been a poll.....MJ good here.stevelaubly - 5-28-2010 at 08:39 PM
I have found with MJ that if I plug it into a bus or use a usb extension I sometimes get static or garble...But plug it straight into the usb on the
computer and it clears right up....Also, a short phone line wire helps, too.vandenberg - 5-30-2010 at 12:24 PM
