DENNIS - 5-29-2010 at 12:45 PM

Every day is Memorial Day. I especially thank those who arn't around to hear it. They paid the price.

Cypress - 5-29-2010 at 12:53 PM

And to those who are paying the price each and every day of their lives.

say what?
memorial day is for remembering those that died in war.
veterans day is more appropriate for acknowledging living veterans.

Howard - 5-29-2010 at 01:43 PM

Memorial Day was always celebrated on May 30th. It was originally called Decoration Day and then moved to the last Monday in May.

Pretty soon Washington will move Christmas to the 4th Sunday in December, July 4th to the first Monday in July and move thanksgiving from Thursday to Monday.

I hope Cinco de Mayo will remain the same.

bajalera - 5-29-2010 at 01:45 PM

Why?

Bajahowodd - 5-29-2010 at 03:14 PM

Why are they nasty? There are differing estimates, but at the upper end, there are 7 million Muslims in the US. And NYC just happens to contain one of the larger groups. In a certain sense, given that a mosque is, after all, a house of worship, would it not make sense that the local Muslims would see a certain redemptive aspect to locating a mosque as both a penance and a tribute to those fallen? That said, Timothy McVeigh was raised in the Roman Catholic Church. So, should we condemn all Catholics?

From the NY Post:

"If the Japanese decided to open a cultural center across from Pearl Harbor, that would be insensitive." "If the Germans opened a Bach choral society across from Auschwitz, even after all these years, that would be an insensitive setting. I have absolutely nothing against Islam. I just think: Why there?"

Bajahowodd - 5-29-2010 at 03:53 PM

Dennis. There is a substantial difference. In both of the cited cases, it was a sovereign nation (Germany, Japan) that had declared war on us. In this case, it's a fringe element of a religion that took down the towers. I see a big difference. Now, if the Taliban or Al Qaeda was seeking to open something, be it a mosque or a hummus factory, I'd agree with you.

Liberals are tediuos and lacking in basic common sense. Debating with 'em is fun, but gets boring quickly, especially when they start name calling.

actually, it was al queda and they happen to be islamics. the motivation of al queda is not religion, the motivation is hatred of US policy and actions

All I can say is that I engaged in no name calling. I think of Dennis as a friend. If anyone appears to have started a name calling match, it is you.

And for the goat, not totally correct. While I wholeheartedly agree with you that there is a hatred of US policies, they are, after all, invoking the most radical ideas found within the Quran to support their ideology and deeds, much to the detriment of mainstream Muslims.

That said, as Memorial Day approaches, I strongly urge everyone to reflect on those who have fought on behalf of this nation. Sons, daughters, sisters, brothers, all went forth in battle to protect this country. I only wish that it did not have to happen in wars of choice some of the time. Double sad.

A mosque near ground zero would be the moral equivalent of this:

Beautiful, ain't it? :fire:

Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick and the Imam

Take the time to listen to the man (Imam) speak in clear tones and in the english language about what ALL Muslims should do... and what the United States is required to take action on to correct for their benefit, in America... and by the way... try and take and carry a Bible to Saudi Arabia, and yes while there take a stroll by the Ka’ba, oh and tell them to change their system to fit yours particular "twist" on life ....

One may conclude that this wave of PC (Political Correctness) on Islam, is in preparation for a military strike into the Tribal Areas in Pakistan.... they have just been put on "notice" by our Government... and we would not want ALL of the Islamic faith to think that we are totally against them...

I echo Mexicorn's words. I have a dad who came back home after fighting in the Philippines, and a brother who came back from Vietnam, suffered from PTSD, and shot himself. He was my baby brother and I miss him.

ELINVESTIG8R - 5-29-2010 at 08:35 PM

RIP with a hardy thank you to all my brothers and sisters who served in the Armed Forces of the United States of America and died as a Soldier, Sailor, Airman, Marine, Coast Guard or National Guard and all Civilians who died while supporting our armed forces as they made our country a better place to live.

BajaNuts - 5-29-2010 at 09:42 PM

A Salute to all veterans who gave all..... and a very heartfelt thank you to all persons, be it military or civilian, who sacrifice to protect a country I love and appreciate.

If you can read these posts, thank a teacher. If you can read these posts in English, thank a soldier.

All gave some, some gave all..........

bajalera - 5-29-2010 at 11:32 PM

Well, I still want to know why Howard, who forecasts a change in the dates of traditional U.S. holidays, hopes the Cinco de Mayo (which doesn't seem to be all that big a deal in Mexico) will stay the same.

shari - 5-30-2010 at 07:42 AM

thank you

Howard - 5-30-2010 at 08:09 AM

A poor attempt at humor. I know that Cinco d Mayo is not really celebrated in Mexico but my attempts at a joke are sometimes lame.

Ah, what the hey.........Today is just as much Cinco as it is Memorial Day and it would be sinful to ignore a good reason to party, so...SALUD.

Here's a site I found very touching, especially looking at the names of the GI's from my home town of Watsonville, CA. Let's not ever forget those who have given their lives for their country.

A fundamental difference between Islam and most major world religions is that there simply is no central authority. Perhaps most Americans either don't know that or don't understand what the distinction means. The video presented an Imam. An Imam, is in fact, a prayer leader. It is the Mullah, who acts as, (if I may make an analogy) his own Pope. Anyone, if they are willing to undergo enough training, such as memorizing the Quran, is capable of establishing themselves as a Mullah, and thereby able to foist here own interpretation of the Quran on any and all followers. As opposed to Roman Catholic priests, who are accountable to the Vatican, once someone establishes themselves as a local leader, they are basically free to pursue their own agenda, however radical it my be.

My personal problem with Islam is that, whether it's the media that fails to cover the moderate Muslims, in favor of the sensational, or that moderate Muslim leaders are failing to step up to denounce the radicals, whichever is correct, or a combination thereof, it does nothing to further the cause of moderate Islam and its adherents.

Thanks, Dad
