Punta Abreojos

jeremias - 5-31-2010 at 04:10 PM

I'm looking to be in or near Abreojos mid-June, and was wondering if anybody knew of the truck camping options or campgrounds nearby(also how much$)? I asked a similar post not too long ago, and i remember Campo Rene came up. Isn't that place just cabinas?

rts551 - 5-31-2010 at 04:16 PM

Campo Rene used to have a web site. but I can't find it.

Palapas are available for Campers. Don't know the current cost. They are nice. Showers available

Beach camping is available up and down the entire coast. Depends on what you want.

June can be Fly season so be prepared

BajaBlanca - 5-31-2010 at 04:17 PM

nope, not just cabinas !!. At campo Rene you can camp and you can RV or you can stay in a cabin ... if I remember correctly, the price as of last year at campo rene for rv-ing was around $300 for the month .. if you have never been to la bocana, pls stop by and see blanca and les at the north end of calle erizo .... from campo rene, go to abreojos, from abreojos nead north 10 miles :)

If you want mroe info, I can get someone to tell me more, BajaBlanca

Thanks for the quick replies, and I will have to check out La Bocana for sure. :)

I've got plenty of time, so I'm trying to maximize my cash by crashing in my camper shell-any additional info would be awesome, thanks!

Fly season? I can't stand flying bugs. There are NONE where I live and when I go someplace that has them it drives me nuts.

Tell me more about the Viscaino fly season. I've been thinking about going camping there this summer.

jeremias - 5-31-2010 at 04:42 PM

flys definitely suck. I heard there's some major mini rats in the area that come scurrying around right at dusk as well. I'm Probably will need my slingshot as well as a screen room.

Stay away... The warm weather and the beach combined seems to attact monsters. It starts in June and by August there are swarms. We call the "cling-ons" because welll.....

Dianat and Shari swears they stay south by Abreojos so you might want to try up there.

and yes the mice are even worse

dtbushpilot - 5-31-2010 at 08:03 PM

Don't know anything about the flying bugs but we have camped at Campo Rene several times. Good food and bar, hot showers and clean bathrooms. Camping there is cheap, probably less than $10 a day, don't remember for sure. There are lots of places to camp along the coast between Abreojos and Campo Rene, just take the single track roads toward the water and go exploring. If you want to save a buck you can camp primitave and stay 1 night at CR to shower, have a drink and dinner.

Marc - 5-31-2010 at 08:24 PM

Is Rene open? Can't find website. I was there twice and really enjoyed myself. We escaped the heat in Mulege in August '08. Went back to the gulf and beat it right back to Rene in a few days. Was 104 in Mulege and about 72 on the Pacific. Magificent surf break on the way to town but we didn't have our boards.

jeremias - 5-31-2010 at 08:36 PM

think maybe a couple days at CR and surf Abreojos, and then up to Asuncion to really kick back.......But there's surf there too huh? .......2 more weeks!......:)

dtbushpilot - 5-31-2010 at 08:46 PM

There are several good surf breaks between Rene and Abreojos but don't tell anybody. There are some between Abreojos and Asuncion too......same deal, don't tell......dt

jeremias - 5-31-2010 at 08:57 PM

Perfect! I'll be very quiet. :)

rts551 - 6-1-2010 at 07:21 AM

Yes Campo Rene is open. Web Site appears to be gone.

I have never experienced flies like I did at Abreojos last summer...swarms would be an understatement...more like an out and out attack! We did find some dead dolphins up the point which may have been the source that year but Abre has always had flies, and folks usually said they were from the dump. We stayed several days though because the nights were stellar and the surf was great...just have to have a screened room to hole up in during the day.
Asuncion didn't have any fly problem at all, it was beautiful there.

I don't think it is the dump... All towns have dumps. Seems to be mainly coming from the beach. Maybe combination of warm air and the sea weed/trash. only occurs in the summer. Oh man when a red tide hits!

the flys!

eetdrt88 - 6-1-2010 at 12:02 PM

the flys out at the point are relentless, but that being said it is still one of my all time favorite spots in Baja...u will find that if u r willing 2 do a little exploring there is no end to the free beach camping in abreojos:cool:

You'll LOVE this trip!

It is Central Baja Coast at its most beautiful and pristine.

Bring a kayak to explore the loooong estuary between Abreojos and La Bocana.
Its protected by a seaward sandspit and is brimming with raparian life.

Stop and meet Blanca in La Bocana.
She has a beautiful place at the far north end of town.

Find Shari's in-laws in San Hipolito, an authentic village along your way.
You'll find charming, friendly folks there.

Between there and Asuncion there are numerous sanddunes and more sweet secret spots to explore.

Of course you'll see Shari & Juan in Asuncion!

In Abreojos be sure to lower your tire pressure way down low for the off-road sand and gravel driving and leave them down until you get back out to Mex-1 in Viscaino where you can quickly bring them back up to highway volume at the Pemex station (one north and one south of town).

Oh, and bring your camera and post your trip report with pix.
I just did the trip and kicked myself the whole time for being CWC (Caught Without Camera)!

bajafam - 6-1-2010 at 02:26 PM

A screen room is definitely a must at Abreojos. But the beach is beautiful, the surf is fantastic and the flies are truly just an annoyance. Yes, there are a lot of them, swarms, even, but just do like my daughter did, and make friends with them :) As for the "mini-rats" sounds like you read a review on WannaSurf ...we didn't experience them, but that certainly doesn't mean that they don't exist. Have fun!

That sounds like the plan, and I will definitely bring a camera.:) Is there anywhere nearby i could rent a kayak?

BajaKeela - 6-1-2010 at 03:29 PM

We camped at Campo Renee at the end of Feb.. Price was $15 a day ..and the bugs were bad..but we had a good time anyway!!

Blanca, any kayaks around your place?

sorry folks...no kayaks here at all...but I will work hard to change that - Art is someone who always comes in his kayak and heads to the lagoon and ocean here

Flylandia or Flyistan

k-rico - 6-1-2010 at 05:00 PM

At first I thought rts551 was kidding with me to keep tourists away, but I guess not. Once I camped at Erendira after harvest. The rotting tomatoes and the "remnants" left behind, so to speak, by the field workers made for flies like I've never seen. Yikes, oh Lord of the Flies, I turned around and went back to quaint and charming Tijuana.

Good point...and the water is colder up in Asuncion, where there are very few flies...

Bajamatic - 6-2-2010 at 10:29 AM

whats the wind like in spring/summer around these parts?

rts551 - 6-2-2010 at 10:56 AM

In the afternnoon
Spring is wind surfer heaven... Hell for the rest of us

summer can be windy but keeps it cool. If the wind dies or comes in over the desert it gets hot

Wiles - 6-2-2010 at 10:58 AM

kelp flies

BajaDanD - 6-2-2010 at 12:14 PM

Best time of year around those parts, fishing and weather, would have to be Oct. through Dec. June and July can be a little windy and water will still be cold.

The flies last summer were most definitely not kelp flies---more like the common house fly type...kelp flies aren't usually as much of a problem.
