Upcoming World Cup

vandenberg - 6-8-2010 at 09:26 AM

I am curious as to how many Nomads are interested in the upcoming World Cup tournament.
First game will be this Friday the 11th at 6.00 am., where
Mexico will take on South Africa and it should be a very entertaining game.
It is televised all over the world, being the #1 sporting event.
I get it on the Canadian Shaw Direct, where ALL the games are telecast in HD on CBC and an affiliate.
I know there will be lots of interest among the Mexican folks.

I'm looking forward to all of it. It's especially prudent to watch the outcome of Mexico's games. When they lose, especially to the US, it's not safe to go out in public....especially to the bars where emotions run high and hot.
GO USA...........GO MEXICO........GO CHARGERS

I can't wait. We're taking a family vacation to Brazil for the next World Cup.

BajaBlanca - 6-8-2010 at 10:35 AM

ARE YOU KIDDING ???!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am from Brasil and I can hardly stand the wait !!! I have the Brazilian international channel and they are showing amazing scenes from South Africa already !! Soooooo wish I were in Brasil for this .... the whole country, and I mean THE WHOLE COUNTRY goes into carnaval (Brazilian spelling) party mode !!!! :bounce:

So, looks like Mexico plays South Africa on Friday June 11 at 3 pm

Also, Mexico City sent a huge Mexican angel statue :saint::saint: that will be unveiled on Friday which will guarantee a Mexico win ... gotta love the Mexicanos for thisssss

now, on a funny note ... for the last world cup, Les and I were in England and as it was my birthday - his best friends got me a birthday cake with a soccer ball on it !!! And they were astounded at my loud well....VERY LOUD cheering sitting on the sofa in their livingroom.. and I had to tone it down. They were not used to it and I had to be respectful ahahaha

Most people really have no idea how passionate we Brazilians are about soccer. one of the first things i remember when we went to brazil to live permanently (I was 14) is my uncle telling me that my team was Flamengo. His team was my team, in other words !! and they are .. to this day

Dave - 6-8-2010 at 11:04 AM

I give Mexico no better than a 50-50 shot of even making it out of the group.

Wow.. good for you ... that sounds like a lot of fun.. hope you can take some pictures.. I'll never get to see one.. so it would be really nice to see what Brazil, the people, the food and the game really looked like

safe trip for you and your family

vandenberg - 6-8-2010 at 12:21 PM

As I grew up in the Netherlands with football/soccer as our main sport and played the game into my late teens, I have to support "the Orange". They have a very good team and should make it a good ways, maybe "all the way" ?
My second choice(should be first one) is Spain, and third Argentina. Sorry Brazilians.

For a complete rundown of the action:

And... don't forget ...there's a 8 hour time difference with the stated times. GMT is greenwich mean time.

Great theme song for the world cup this year but...to be honest the thing I look forward to most is the soundtrack which always seems to come out really good!
Adrian on the other hand even got a widget on his desktop that's counting down to the seconds remaining for the world cup...yes seconds...
They said on T.V. that the inauguration ceremony is at 6 or 7 am? HA I'd like to see him get up for that!!

As all mexicans I do hope Mexico get's as far as they can, they have been playing Ok for the past few friendly games but who knows...I won't be betting on them anytime soon :biggrin:

rob - 6-9-2010 at 08:26 AM

Any other dual SA/Mexers out there? I put $5 on each team for Friday's game and know I will lose.

That's an understatement. Mexico will beat SA. It's Uruguay I'm concerned about. I give them an outside chance to beat France.

Anyone know the status of Marquez?

Oso - 6-9-2010 at 05:44 PM

I have yet to collect my winnings from the last one. In fairness to the losers, there is a considerable amount of distance involved and the USPS has a problem with volatile substances being sent by mail. But one of these days, I'm coming down there to collect.
Meanwhile, there is no guarantee that Mexico and USA will be heads up in some future round, but if so, I'm up for double or nothing with the LOSERS, (you know who you are).:tumble:

BTW, all of my maintenance crew are Mexican and they all asked for Friday off. That would have left us in a difficult situation, so I compromised and said if they came to work they could have the first two hours,7-9, to watch the game in the lunch room and get back to work later. They agreed and I hope to join them, although the timing is brutal.

OK - I have a freebie for you. I still owe your loonie mom a case of swill for the lucky overtime shot the Canadians got in the Olympics. Now if you and I can come up with a similar bet then if I win, I keep my case and if I lose, you get one too (but can't drink it until BB is born). Either way, you're not out anything. I either bring down two cases of Moose Drool or none.

BMG - 6-9-2010 at 09:45 PM

Best line I've heard so far:

"The World Cup starts tomorrow and America is in the midst of tentatively preparing to care for a sport we only understand as 'that thing we watched our pre-teen sons and daughters do poorly while we're hungover on a Saturday morning' and getting ready to ramp up excitement as the tournament goes on.... until the USA loses, at which point we declare we never really cared anyway and completely stop paying attention."

irenemm - 6-10-2010 at 11:05 PM

All the schools of Mexico have permission to have the TV turned on tomorrow for the game.
We are opening early at 5:30 am
Anyone want to come and see it. Hope for the home team.
Good Luck Mexico

It's kinda of fun, even if you don't totally enjoy the sport, as there are so many that do.. plus how many games go for a month to see who is the best... in the world..

Only wish I could go sit at a bar the hole month and drink beer, eat tacos, and what ever I would like.. and enjoy all the folks, just getting to sit there with a lot of folks and jaw .. used to do it a long time ago and it used to be a lot of fun... but, not anymore.. a few minutes.. thats about it..

How about some Nomads putting up their favorite water holes, with the best food (world cup specials) and HD TV sets (subjective I know), but some prefer Sony over Panasonic over...

I'm sure there are a few around that many would like to know about.. for the Wold Cup and just for a beer and/or what ever...

My wife and I experienced a crowd of people watching the last World Cup when we were in Campo Grande, Brazil. Literally 100's of people watching the game on a single TV in the street, yelling and screaming and partying. It was unreal.

Before that we were in Rio and saw the locals playing vollyball on the beach with their FEET - only their feet. It was amazing to see that, incredible talent.

Looking forward to watching as many games as we can this year. My wife's family is from Germany and they go nuts over there too! Big time. Thus we are rooting for the US and Germany.

They were the better team, but had, like usual, their regular finishing problem. They do need a big, designated striker badly. Had those problems at their warm up games also.

It's been my experience that when Mexico plays, the streets are empty. Everything comes to a complete stop and when Mexico suffers the misfortune of a loss, they should be left alone to grieve.
Furthermore, when Mexico loses to the USA, it would be suicidal to display anything like approval in public.
We will never understand.

was just thinking about the food and booze.. don't have a favorite.. but, do enjoy others who really get into it... what was that old line with ABC Wide World of Sports... agony of defeat were that guy losses it going off the end of the ski jump, as one can see its been a while since I have watch sports .... a long while.. but, it used to be fun as I remember...

Hope all enjoy the game.. and don't get hurt.. it is just a game, so ... take it easy and enjoy...

Uruguay vs. France

Teams are in the group with Mexico.

BajaBlanca - 6-11-2010 at 10:33 AM

so...I heard that Brazilians were rooting for SA this morning since their coach is Brazilian ... unusual since Brazilian love Mexicans usually

I was teaching English to the docs and nurses at the suguro social this morning and one of the nurses, who is not in the class, was watching the game and cheering as LOUD as I do when Brazil plays ... I do hope there is no violence on the field, I agree with wessongroup that it is only a game and sportsmanship is vital.

I think it was Vince Lombardi who said "A tie is like kissing your sister."

But, under the circumstances this was probably the best outcome. S. Africa escaped the humiliation of being the first host nation ever to lose an opening round, both are still in the game with no disadvantage, having one goal each. There were a few fouls (there always are), but no really egregious red card offenses and so far there seems to be no bad blood.

Not the same tomorrow. We need to whip them Brits like a rented mule. USA! USA! USA!

SiReNiTa - 6-11-2010 at 03:56 PM

Uruguay Vs. France was tied 0-0 so Mexico and South Africa are tied in first place with 1 point each!!

I have to chuckle, just a bit. Given the nature of this forum, it is really not reflective of US culture as a whole. I was picking up a vibe from BMG on this. Frankly, the vast majority of Americans could care less about the World Cup. A significant number of them, will of course visit sports bars to drink. But, after all this time, Americans complain about the low scoring in Futbol games, which undeniably have tons of action. They'd rather watch besibol, where there is also usually low scores, but significantly less action. Go figure.

If yes, does anyone know what that background noise is? It sounds like a huge swarm of bees. I heard it yesterday and it's the same today. It's also gawwwdammm annoying.
I thought it may be all those plastic horns people are carrying around bleating at once but the intensity never changes.
Any ideas?

Those vuvuzelas are annoying, but so are the airhorns used at most USA games,....... and the stupid singing and chanting at EPL games. How do you like to listen to a bunch of a..holes singing " you never walk alone" during a whole 90 minute game ? ( Liverpool ):no:

jodiego - 6-13-2010 at 09:42 AM

Ah yes, those obnoxious vuvuzelas. Organizers did a noise level study before the Cup started and determined that the noise level wasn't that bad (wonder if they've ever sat in the middle of them?). Now I just saw on TV that the World Cup people are seriously considering banning them (maybe they finally sat in the middle of them). Personally, I cannot imagine spending hundreds, maybe even thousands of dollars for a ticket and having to listen to that constant buzz for the entire game. ¡Abajo los vuvuzelas

From what I read in the paper, there was a fear of banning the obnoxious horns (considered a National Symbol) because the "Common" People" of the host country would feel it was a RACIAL slight.

We Must B PC.

Of course, it might be a valid fear in an area where angry people run around chopping off limbs and heads with machetes

Ouch! The Krauts just slaughtered the Aussies 4-0. Adding insult to injury, Oz had to finish most of the second half with 10 men because of a red that really should only have been a yellow.

vandenberg - 6-13-2010 at 01:46 PM

Bear,
even without the red ( and I agree ) the score could have easily been 6 to 7-0. The Germans missed some gimmies.
Like always, don't hear much about them, but watch them show for the semis. Discipline and team work. And this from a Dutchmen , whose team has all those multimillionaires in their ranks. Play great everywhere, except when they play for their home country. But, maybe different this time around. Keeping my fingers crossed.
Will know more tomorrow morning. 5.30 am Yuckkk!!!

Ties are only in the group stage. After that, there is overtime and penalty kicks to decide the winner. I hate that penalty kicks can decide the World Cup champ.

capt. mike - 6-14-2010 at 07:58 AM

no diff than sudden death.
if they are good enuff to be champs they shouldn't make penalties.

the Mayans ball games often went 3 days straight.
the winners got to have their heads cut off as a point of pride and honor.

puts a new sheen on "losing your head" over a game.

or..."Heads up" as a warning to be vigil during play.:bounce:

Scoring Excitement

MrBillM - 6-14-2010 at 09:32 AM

I prefer a game with higher scoring like:

Cricket.

Now, there's a game to get the juices flowing.

vuvuzelas

rob - 6-14-2010 at 11:05 AM

My brother (in Cape Town) tells me that the organizers have lost a LOT of ticket sales thanks to vuvuzelas (and it's a long way from being the national instrument) - just one of those crazes.

BillM - I am NOT a cricket fan (even worse than baseball) but the game is unrecognizable compared to my youth, when I watched England play South Africa and England scored 11 runs (bases) in two and half days. Mind-numbing.

Now games are one-day, slash and burn affairs that approach exciting . .

Vuvuzela1.jpg - 7kB

That's correct.
From now till the final 16, there will be 2 games, in the same group, played simultaneously, to prevent anyone from knowing the outcome of the other game and adjust their squad accordingly. One group's game will be at 7.00 am PT and the second at 12.30PM PT
