Rocks or something inside tuna flesh.

maspacifico - 6-11-2010 at 12:11 PM

Just had the first of the tuna I caught Wednesday. Seared it to perfection, except for the surprise hard deposits inside the flesh! They didn't add anything to the flavor, pretty gritty when chewed, a nasty surprise. About an 1/8 of an inch roundish and I could mash them down like the calcium deposits in our water. Never saw anything like it before and didn't see anything unusual while filleting. Anyone know what it is? Will I live?

So far, Nomads have come up with as many answers as Google! It might have been an import from China.......

Parasites, worms, cooked to a crispy crunch?

woody with a view - 6-11-2010 at 04:21 PM

calcium deposits from when you rinsed the fish?

send my reward to the following address........

bajabass - 6-11-2010 at 04:24 PM

Inside the flesh? I think they would be on the outside.

i vote WORMS

all fish have WORMS

that's why you freeze it or cook it

maspacifico - 6-11-2010 at 04:39 PM

They were inside the flesh. At first I thought they came from the wasabe I'd just mixed up, but happened again without the wasabe. Anyway, I'm not twitching. At least not any more than usual.

If you freeze or cook rocks, you still have rocks. I'm not too worried about getting worms from 15 pound tuna. When I found them I went through what I had pretty well to see what was up. Didn't see anything other than these hard deposits.

The unused roe being absorbed by the body?:light:

Neighbors ate some last night and said theirs was fine. Must just have been in the pieces I kept for myself!

Damn, I am ready to catch some Atun with or without rocks.

Where did you catch the critter?

classicbajabronco - 6-11-2010 at 10:28 PM

Worms/parasites...I have caught salmon, steelhead and sierra with them inside. And it tasted yummy, however I didn't know it had worms...guess it's better than having crabs.... The ones i found were medium hard oblong while pellets. I have also found them in bunnies.;D

yes...

Don't know how to add a photo to an open thread......picture of fish gout with something most will recognize for scale. It won't crush with just fingers, but teeth or a knife will crush it.

If I hadn't caught this myself, and filleted it myself, and carried it to the refrigerator myself...I would swear someone had dropped it into the dirt and that's how these things got into it.

I tried yesterday morning to get another fish, but the water has turned over here....10 degrees colder. Tuna are gone.

Looks like a kidney stone to me, mas.

DENNIS - 6-12-2010 at 06:44 AM

It's a pearl. Only a few of us know that Tuna is in the same family as Oysters. Some knuckleheads still think Tuna is a fish.
