The Travel Channel's Bizarre Foods Does Baja!

Loretana - 6-12-2010 at 05:53 PM

I find myself watching this show, in spite of the prevailing "yuck" factor....it will be interesting to see what he comes up with here in Baja. :wow:

Broadcast on the Travel Channel Monday, June 14th, 10 PM E/P

"Andrew explores the peninsula of Baja in Mexico - where the land is harsh, but the people and the food are out of this world! From street carts to high-end cuisine in Tijuana, Ensenada and La Paz, Andrew samples the best."

Andrew Zimmerman Was Grossed Out in Hawaii

When he tried and failed to eat something made with Spam.

I hope that someone offers him a Baja Mystery Meat (TM) sandwich or a bacon-wrapped Baja dog - he will throw his hands up, scream like a little girl and run away.

Cultural anthropologists Bates and Plogs definition:

Culture: The system of shared beliefs, values, customs, behaviours, and artifacts that the members of society use to cope with their world and with one another, and that are transmitted from generation to generation through learning

I make it a part of my life to experience other cultures through travel, language, food, music, lovemaking, and many other venues. Just because the Travel Channel is a media outlet doesn't mean their presentations of foreign countries have no value.

I don't particularly admire bug eating, for instance, but have you taken a hard look at a shrimp lately?

Loretana - 6-12-2010 at 07:13 PM

I see Osprey deleted his snarky post. :saint:

noproblemo2 - 6-12-2010 at 07:31 PM

Or Langosta aka as "bugs"?? Maybe he decided to be a gentleman???

YUK......And I have to wonder "WHY" when I'm in the grocery store meat departments, what flavor could come from the packages of chicken feet. Don't people know where they've been walking?

Then I gather you're not a fan of menudo......

I remember an All in the Family episode where Archie wouldn't eat a sandwich with something in it that came from a cow's mouth (tongue)...so Edith asked him what to make and he told her to make something with eggs!

Chicken feet don't really have much meat on them, DENNIS, however, they do have tons of flavor. I use them, along with necks, backs, wings, etc, to make chicken stock. Put them under the broiler until they turn brown on both sides and add them to your other broth engredients

I don't know about the rest of you, but I've always thought of this show to be somewhat akin to a circus side show. Objective number one is to gross people out. That said, I find Tony Bourdain's show on the same network to be interesting and informative. Bourdain does run into some odd eats from time to time, but that is not his focus or mission.

Tony B loves "odd eats"

Loretana - 6-13-2010 at 06:05 PM

I am in total agreement, Howodd......

And besides that, Tony B is smokin' hot!!

I KNOW

All the places that Andrew went in TJ as well as Ensenada. Did not know about the chocolatas, however in La Paz.
I have also spoken to the same chefs he spoke with.
Keep in mind that the show was shot in 2007. This airing will probably do much for the tourist trade in TJ and Ensenada.
The most daring food, however, was the squid stuffed with bull balls and brains, at a restaurant in LA Paz.

For those of us who have traveled the pninsula extansively, the show was a trip to memory lane.

There is another showing in three hours.
Be sure you set your TIVOs.
We need more great positive news for Mexico

Andale pues!

Loretana - 6-14-2010 at 08:06 PM

Well, chamacos,

The show, as a whole, was hardly Andrew Zimmern's standard "gross out".......

The huitlacoche crepes had me swooning!

I ate some a few years back at Hacienda de los Morales in Mexico City and they were to die for!!

And the other dishes, especially the sarandeado jurel and the chocolata clams were standard fare here in Loreto.

I'm giving him five stars.

The guide says he is in Samoa tonight?? ... in 2 minutes we will see! Okay, the Samoa one is on the higher digital channel and the Baja one is on the lower regular channel... Great!

capt. mike - 6-15-2010 at 08:05 AM

that was a great show.
i wish he would have gone to that other guy here who has a restaurant in La Paz, Jesse!!

i have dived for clams all over the SOC and it is way fun to eat them on the boat.

looking forward to some tongue soon.:lol::light:
the balls were the bomb.
eyes i haven't done but brains are great.
bone marrow...i dunno...
cooked blood - forget it...
i missed it in 2007 sure glad they ran it again.

Tony Boirdain is the top guy tho. all class. his book is an excellent read.

David K - 6-15-2010 at 08:17 AM

I wonder if Jesse knows the owner of Buffalo BBQ?

I've done eyes...mixed with brain. Never again.

Bone marrow? C'mon Mike, you love it. Doncha remember eating pork chops when you were a kid? The half-dollar size piece of cooked marrow in the center of the bone? That was the best part. Not exactly Osso Bucco, but really good.

oldlady - 6-15-2010 at 11:40 AM

Happen to see the show before I read this thread. It was fine until....well...I've heard of keeping your eye on the ball, but that was too much for me.

KASHEYDOG - 6-15-2010 at 11:58 AM

I'll try anything once. I've never said "I don't like it" before I've tried it and I've even surpised myself at what I like. It all looked pretty delicous to me. Can't wait to get down to La Paz and go dive for chocolate clams. My mouth was drooling through the whole show. I'm going to T.J. thursday, think I'll try to find that La Difference resturant for lunch. Then over to the local market for carnitas and dinner. :o :tumble:

OK....Give them YUMMY eyeballs a try. Out of a cow, they're about the size of a tennis ball and more slimey than okra. You might really like them.:lol::lol:

"The huitlacoche crepes had me swooning!"

Huitlacoche is right up there among the best foods one can find on a Mexican menu. Sadly, it's not all that easy to find.

The huitlacoche crepe/thingy he was serving is on my 1001 foods to eat before I die. I bet the huitlacoche was shipped up from mainland Mexico.

When I lived in Oaxaca I saw it in the mercado de abastos often, usually in the summer. It rained every day in the late afternoon, and that is what it takes to grow the must on the corn. There is a boutique farmer guy here in Oregon who is attempting to make it happen.......I'm on the lookout! :dudette:
