car thefts increasing - be careful

sharktooth - 6-16-2010 at 10:17 AM

Just a quick alert to everyone

I work in the tourist Mexican auto industry, and we are seeing a dramatic increase in auto theft claims for 2010

The theft rate has nearly doubled compared to recent years - so be extra careful with your car.

The club, a brake lock, or any other theft deterent is highly recommended - even when parking for 5 minutes! SUVs and pickups are the highest risk. Even though the club or brake locks are not theft proof - they can be enough of a pain to send thieves to the next vehicle.

Sorry to be an alarmist - but it seems there may be some organized auto theft racket going on right now - so be careful.

Cheers

Where are the more likely places for cars being stolen?

toneart - 6-16-2010 at 10:28 AM

Specifically, what areas of Baja are you noticing this increase?

Woooosh - 6-16-2010 at 10:35 AM

We had a 1986 pick-up truck stolen sunday morning in Rosarito- leaks mucho oil with no alternator- good luck to them with it.

:lol::lol: Sweet freakin' revenge. You had better hope they don't find your address in the truck, Woooosh. They'll return it for sure.

I'm betting Ensenada is right up there near the top. GTA has always been epidemic here.

It is nice to be talking stolen cars as the major problem instead of the really really ugly narco incidents of the past few years. Getting back to normal.

Years ago I had my Toyota Camry stolen in TJ in the time it took me to walk up ONE flight of stairs and look out the window ... :fire: :fire:

Thanks for the info.

Yep...Next we'll be discussing mordida like it just started happening. I feel the return to normalcy.

About 10 years ago someone broke into my Bronco right in front of my house. They stole the radio and nothing else. The joke was on them it did not work. While we are in Ensenada doing shopping we always pay someone to watch our truck.

sharktooth - 6-16-2010 at 12:23 PM

Thefts are happening everywhere - but the highest concentration is within a few hundred miles of the border in Baja and mainland Mexico.

Thefts have always been an issue - BUT the past few months have been record setting rates of theft claims.

The sky is not falling - so I am not trying to incite panic - just be more vigilant right now.

There has not been any violence related to the car thefts - just cars vanishing while the owner is gone. So heads up.

noproblemo2 - 6-16-2010 at 12:25 PM

Is this problem centralized or all over Baja?

SiReNiTa - 6-16-2010 at 12:36 PM

When I was living in Ensenada someone broke in to my 92 Explorer, papers were all there and everything...nothing was taken...but they did screw up my door so now I can only unlock the car from the passenger side (grrrr).

Aaah well...when it comes to having to lock our car doors here in B.A. we'll let you know!:spingrin:

We've bee seeing the upswing in property crimes for the past six months or so in Rosarito. A bad combination of there being more tweekers, less service-sector jobs and no dominant cartel to scare the c-ckroaches into staying indoors like before. I would think this problem runs more along the border, and not down the baja coastline.

I've been told that one should never use a remote to lock a vehicle.

Isn't that how you turn on the alarm?

Can't speak for all but using the interior door lock also activates my alarm. In addition, my insurance required I install an hard wired ignition lock out that works independently of the car alarm system. It activates 30 seconds after I turn off the ignition.

Be careful in Mexicali

www.nohotwire.com - $465 ignition kill switch

------------------------------------------------------------------------

I parked my Rubicon Wrangler in Mexicali in front of a minimart when TW got in a bad accident and totalled his Toyota pickup a few years ago (Dec. 07). While I was talking to the Police Officers regarding his accident, a lowrider pulled into the parking lot, and 4 men inside stopped behind my Jeep. They looked around, and saw me standing with the Police across the street looking straight at them, and they quickly left the parking lot. c-ckroaches? That's a good description.

Why is this?

Bajafun777 - 6-17-2010 at 06:25 AM

Getting ready for 3 month stay in Baja and taking my jeep down, since wife has doctor appointments in San Diego staying about 8 miles north of Rosarito. I had a kill switch put in just for this reason and it is not easy to find. I had a relatives little boy get in and he could not find it even though he seems to find everything else,LOL. Will it stop a theft not sure but will definately slow them down and I will also be putting a tire wheel boot lock on also. Just not too much fun stealing something that will make you do a lot of work to get it. Thevies like to get in and get out fast while laughing their butts off going down the road in your vehicle. Later------- GT

rhintransit - 6-17-2010 at 07:12 AM

here in the tiny village of El Juncalito, just north of Puerto Escondido and south of Loreto, we had two truck and a dirt bike stolen the May. both palapas were ransacked and various items taken from the interiors.
the two homes were unoccupied at the time, but were not remote and had neighbors.
all vehicles were eventually recovered, two in Constitucion and one on the Pacific side, I can't remember where, but north of that area.
in response one of the landlords had the Loreto police out for an open meeting. we had twice daily/nightly patrols for awhile, then a military truck with two armed soldiers came through daily. I haven't seen either of those lately.

I've seen that short attention span before. It's almost like you should continually reward them for their visits or they feel unappreciated.

Ditto on that!!!!!!!! Have even been told by the Policia that they don't have gas to come after an incident.... Yeah right, offer $$$ and they suddenly have gas........

Apparently, the code can be electronically intercepted.
