BajaBlanca - 6-20-2010 at 04:07 PM

Yellowtail are here ... the water close to shore is cold but the water further out is warmer. One panga caught 3 tons (net) and Domingo, fisherman, caught six at Vente Cinco and Polaris Bank ...

looks like fishing season is OPEN :bounce::bounce:

They have some REALLY big pangas to lay out nets on the pacific. I have seen them come in completely packed with fish and the net.

What are three tons of yellowtail actually turned into by the local pangueros?

I mean, what is the end result of these yellowtail to the consumer?

shari - 6-21-2010 at 08:38 PM

some go to market fresh and some get canned.

BajaBlanca - 6-22-2010 at 02:47 PM

they are shipped out to Ensenada and then resold

lots are canned at our local cannery - like Shari said

some are eaten right here at home :)

During the spring melee when the yellowtail come close to the islands, the pangueros circle them with nets, put divers overboard to lift the nets over the rocks, and then start hauling them in to the boats when the circle closes up. It is not unusual for a panga to have those kind of loads and be only inches from sinking as they slowly make their way to the local fishbuyer. In fact last year, a little wind came up and one actually started taking on water but they were rescued by some other pangueros, who of course kept the fish that were floating around the panga. Seems that they have a unique view on salvage rights. When the market in Ensenada goes soft due to too many fish, they just keep bringing them in and selling them for less.
